“Departments of human feeling”: Roderick Hudson, Love, and Friendship in the Gilded Age

Extract

The extent to which American men, during most of the 19th century, could feel and openly express an unashamed, unself-conscious, all-consuming love for members of their own sex is a phenomenon that has not yet been adequately studied or explained. Although extensive work has been done on the “female world of love and ritual,” we know comparatively little of the corresponding male world of love and ritual. We are only beginning to rediscover the extent, the significance, and the varieties of love between men in the 19th-century United States.
