page 293 note * A modification of this rule, in certain cases, was agreed to at a Meeting of the Society held on January 3, 1831.
At the Meeting of the Society, on January 5, 1857, when the reduction of the Contributions from £3, 3s. to £2, 2s., from the 11th to the 25th year of membership, was adopted, it was resolved that the existing Members shall share in this reduction, so far as regards their future annual Contributions.

B., a gentleman well versed in science (or Polite Literature, as the case may be), being “to our knowledge desirous of becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, we hereby “recommend him as deserving of that honour, and as likely to prove a useful and valuable “Member.”
