The object of this paper is to investigate, for the ellipse and hyperbola, a series of propositions analogous to those which, in the circle, constitute the calculus of sines.

Any diameter of an ellipse, or a transverse diameter of a hyperbola, is expressed by a, its conjugate diameter by b, and the ratio of these diameters, viz. by c. The nature of the curves is exbpressed by this formula, In the ellipse, c has the sign +, but in the hyperbola the sign −.
