This review is one of a series commemorating the bicentenary of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1783–1983). However, in the case of freshwater science, so little work was carried out prior to the establishment of the Royal Society that it is convenient to attempt a comprehensive, if rather brief, review of all the published work available in this field. Restrictions of space have meant that most studies —especially those projects issuing many publications over the last two decades can only be given brief mention.
