Recent work has shown that it is possible to systematize quasars (QSOs) spectral diversity in 4DE1 parameter space. The spectra contained in most of the surveys have low signal to noise ratio which fed the impression that all QSO’s are spectroscopically similar. Exploration of 4DE1 parameter space gave rise to the concept of two populations of QSOs that present important spectroscopic differences. We aim to quantify broad emission line differences between radio quiet and radio loud sources by exploiting more complete samples of QSO with spectral coverage in Hβ, MgII and CIV emission lines. We used a high redshift sample (0.35 < z < 1) of strong radio emitter QSOs observations from Calar Alto Observatory in Spain.

Diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in galaxies can be found in early-type galaxies, in bulges of late-type galaxies, in the interarm regions of galaxy disks, and outside the plane of such disks. The emission-line spectrum of the DIG can be confused with that of a weakly active galactic nucleus. It can also bias the inference of chemical abundances and star formation rates in star forming galaxies. We discuss how one can detect and feasibly correct for the DIG contribution in galaxy spectra.

This contribution describes the concept, main structure and goals, and some highlighted outcomes, of the AstroCamp—an international academic excellence program in the field of astronomy and physics created in 2012 and organized by Centro de Astrofsica da Universidade do Porto (CAUP) together with the Paredes de Coura municipality and several national and international partners.

I present an overview of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) teams involving 950 hours of observation. We will target two well-studied fields with excellent supporting data (e.g., from HST-CANDELS): GOODS-North and South, including the Ultra Deep Field. The science goal of JADES is to chart galaxy evolution at z > 2, and potentially out to z > 10, using the rest-frame optical and near-IR though observations from ≍ 1–5μm. Multi-colour NIRCam imaging with 9 filters will enable photometric redshifts and the application of the Lyman break technique out to unprecedented distances. NIRSpec spectroscopy (with spectral resolving powers of R = 100, 1000 & 2700) will measure secure spectroscopic redshifts of the photometrically-selected population, as well as stellar continuum slopes in the UV rest-frame, and hence study the role of dust, stellar population age, and other effects. Measuring emission lines can constrain the dust extinction, star formation rates, metallicity, chemical abundances, ionization and excitation mechanism in high redshift galaxies. Coupling NIRCam and NIRSpec observations will determine stellar populations (age, star formation histories, abundances) of galaxies and provide the information to correct their broad-band spectral energy distribution for likely line contamination. Potentially we can search for signatures of Population III stars such as HeII. We can address the contribution of star-forming galaxies at z > 7 to reionization by determining the faint end slope of the luminosity function and investigating the escape fraction of ionizing photons by comparing the UV stellar continuum with the Balmer-line fluxes.

One of the most important open issues in astronomy is the assembly of galactic disks. Over the last decade this has been addressed with large surveys of the internal kinematics of galaxies spanning the last 10 billion years of the universe. I will discuss recent results from the field that show the kinematic assembly of disk galaxies since a redshift of 2.5, including recent deep 10–30 hour observations by my group with the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck. These results strongly challenge traditional analytic models of galaxy formation and provide an important benchmark for simulations. Furthermore, I will discuss our plans for extending measurements to higher redshifts with future instruments such as the JWST's NIRSpec IFU and the E-ELT's MOSAIC and HARMONI IFUs. From mock JWST and E-ELT observations of simulated galaxies, we are learning that interpreting these observations of galaxies in the early universe, when merging is frequent, is not necessarily straightforward.

It is generally recognized that massive galaxies form through a combination of in-situ collapse and ex-situ accretion. The in-situ component forms early, where gas collapse and compaction leads to the formation of massive compact systems (blue and red “nuggets”) seen at z > 1. The subsequent accretion of satellites brings in ex-situ material, growing these nuggets in size and mass to appear as the massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) we see locally. Due to stochasticity in the accretion process, in a few rare cases a red nugget will evolve to the present day having undergone little ex-situ mass accretion. The resulting massive, compact and ancient objects have been termed “relic galaxies”. Detailed stellar population and kinematic analyses are required to characterise these systems. However, an additional crucial aspect lies in determining the fraction of ex-situ mass they have accreted since their formation. Globular cluster systems can be used to constrain this fraction, since the oldest and most metal-poor globular clusters in massive galaxies are primarily an accreted, ex-situ population. Models for the formation of relic galaxies and their globular cluster systems suggest that, due to their early compaction and limited accretion of dark-matter dominated satellites, relic galaxies should have characteristically low dark-matter mass fractions compared to ETGs of the same stellar mass.

We present here an edutainment strategy to communicate science and technology which is strongly based on personal motivation of the learner candidate: participants/players learn because they find it useful/interesting in order to achieve their own goals in some unique game. Our own goal is to capture young people’s attention in an immersive and collective storytelling experience within the framework of a role-playing game specifically designed for scientific literacy. The first experiences in public high schools of Argentina are reported here.

Complex organic molecules (COMs) may have played a role in the formation of life in the early Earth (Herbst & van Dishoeck (2009)). Here we present the formation of NH2CHO and CH3CHO upon vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation of CO:NH3 and CO:CH4 ice mixtures, simulating the UV processing of interstellar ices in the interior of dense clouds. We have found that the conversion from ${\rm{N}}{{\rm{H}}_{\dot 2}}$ radicals to NH2CHO is 4–15 times higer than that from ${\rm{N}}{{\rm{H}}_{\dot 3}}$ to CH3CHO, probably due to the competing formation of larger hydrocarbons in the latter case.

Blazars are radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets oriented towards the observer’s line-of-sight. Based on their optical spectra, blazars may be classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) or BL Lacs. FSRQs are more luminous blazars with both narrow and broad emission and absorption lines, while BL Lacs are less luminous and featureless. Recent studies show that blazars dominate (˜93%) the already-identified EGRET sources (142), suggesting that among the unidentified sources (129) there could still be faint blazars. Due to the presence of a strong non-thermal component inside their jets, blazars are found to display a weaker depression at ˜4000 Å (K 4000 ≤ 0.4). In this study, we aimed at determining the K 4000 break for a selected sample among the potential blazar candidates from unidentified EGRET sources to confirm their blazar nature. We used two blazar candidates, 3EG J1800-0146 and 3EG J1709-0817 associated with radio counterparts, J1802-0207 and J1713-0817, respectively. Their optical counterparts were obtained through spectroscopic observations using Robert Stobie spectrograph (RSS) at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa. The observed Ca II H & K lines depression at ˜4000 Å in spectra of these sources show a shallow depression, K 4000 = 0.35 ± 0.02 and 0.24 ± 0.01, respectively, suggesting that these sources are blazar candidates. Moreover, the redshifts z = 0.165 and 0.26 measured in their spectra confirm the extragalactic nature of these sources.

Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) can be formed on icy dusty grains in molecular clouds and protoplanetary disks. The number of astronomical detections of solid COMs, however, is very limited. With the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) this should change, but in order to identify solid state features of COMs, accurate laboratory data are needed. Here we present high resolution (0.5 cm–1) infrared ice spectra of acetone (C3H6O) and methyl formate (HCOOCH3), two molecules already identified in astronomical gas phase surveys, whose interstellar synthesis is expected to follow solid state pathways.

The contact with science is very important to the development of a conscious citizen, even if he, or she, never work with. Astronomy is an excellent way to do this approximation, simply because everyone can see the sky and has questions about it. This project aims to use observational night to discuss the classroom situations. We have made interventions in a rural local school in Caçapava do Sul (Brazil) during five years which we explain what we will see and, after that, we observe it. Since 2018, we have used the Caçapava do Sul Meteorite, that available a direct contact with a real space rock, when everyone can test the resistance and the weight of this meteorite. During this time it was almost 2 000 people has been attending by us and we noted that the students had increased their notion and comprehension about science in general.

In this work, we study the properties of galaxies that are showing the inside-out assembly (which we call inside-out assembled galaxies; IOAGs), with the main aim to understand better their properties and morphological transformation. We analysed a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8), with stellar masses in the range log M* = 10.73 – 11.03 M⊙ at at z < 0.1, and analyze their location in the stellar mass-SFR and the color-stellar mass diagram. We found that IOAGs have different spectroscopic properties, most of them being classified either as AGN or composite. We found that the majority of our sources are located below the main sequence of star formation in the SFR-stellar mass diagram, and in the green valley or red sequence in the color-stellar mass diagram. We argue that IOAGs seem to correspond to the transition area where the galaxies are moving from star-forming to quiescent, and from the blue cloud to the red sequence and/or to recently quenched galaxies.

Dwarf galaxies are thought to be dominant contributors of ionizing photons during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR). Our knowledge of the statistics of these high redshift galaxies is constantly improving and will take yet another important step forward with the launch of JWST. At the same time, the upper limits on the EoR 21cm power spectrum are continually falling, with a firm measurement from SKA-low being a certainty in coming years. In order to maximise what we can learn from these two complimentary observational datasets, we need to be able to model them together, self-consistently. In this talk, I will present insights into the connection between galaxy formation and the EoR gained from the DRAGONS suite of semi-analytic and hydrodynamic galaxy formation simulations. Using these we find that the steep faint end slope of the high- redshift galaxy UV luminosity function extends well beyond current observational limits, indicating that only ∼ 50% of the ionising photons available for reionisation have been observed at z < 7. I will also discuss the relative contribution of quasars to reionisation and present constraints on ionising escape fraction models.

With the exception of some nearby galaxies, we cannot resolve stars individually. To recover the galaxies star formation history (SFH), the challenge is to extract information from their integrated spectrum. A widely used tool is the full spectral fitting technique. This consists of combining simple stellar populations (SSPs) of different ages and metallicities to match the integrated spectrum. This technique works well for optical spectra, for metallicities near solar and chemical histories not much different from our Galaxy. For everything else there is room for improvement. With telescopes being able to explore further and further away, and beyond the optical, the improvement of this type of tool is crucial. SSPs use as ingredients isochrones, an initial mass function, and a library of stellar spectra. My focus are the stellar libraries, key ingredient for SSPs. Here I talk about the latest developments of stellar libraries, how they influence the SSPs and how to improve them.

Children in elementary and middle school learn fundamental concepts of science in their local language. There seems to be some discrepancies between what they learn in school and up-to-date terminologies because academic terminologies are usually updated and shared only in English by each specific academic society. We introduce the online dictionary called as “The Internet Encyclopedia of Astronomy” compiled and provided by the Astronomical Society of Japan as an efficient solution for such terminology problem.

We summarize here some of the results reviewed recently by Sanchez (2020) comprising the advances in the comprehension of galaxies in the nearby universe based on integral field spectroscopic galaxy surveys. In particular we explore the bimodal distribution of galaxies in terms of the properties of their ionized gas, showing the connection between the star-formation (quenching) process with the presence (absence) of molecular gas and the star-formation efficiency. We show two galaxy examples that illustrates the well known fact that ionization in galaxies (and the processes that produce it), does not happen monolitically at galactic scales. This highlight the importance to explore the spectroscopic properties of galaxies and the evolutionary processes unveiled by them at different spatial scales, from sub-kpc to galaxy wide.

UV irradiation of ices plays an important role in different inter- and circumstellar environments. Following the absorption of UV photons in ice, two processes compete: photodesorption and photodissociation/chemistry. From an experimental point of view it is very hard to discriminate between photodesorption and photodissociation (and resulting photochemistry). In this work we present our first attempts to distinguish both effects. The performance is demonstrated on the example of CO-ice, known not to dissociate upon UV irradiation, and CH4-ice that does fragment.

Though half of cosmic starlight is absorbed by dust and reradiated at long wavelengths (3μ m – 3 mm), constraints on the infrared through millimeter galaxy luminosity function (the ‘IRLF’) are poor in comparison to the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical galaxy luminosity function, particularly at z ⩾ 2.5. Here we present a backward evolution model for interpreting number counts, redshift distributions, and cross-band flux density correlations in the infrared and submillimeter sky, from 70μm – 2 mm, using a model for the IRLF out to the epoch of reionization. Mock submillimeter maps are generated by injecting sources according to the prescribed IRLF and flux densities drawn from model spectral energy distributions that mirror the distribution of SEDs observed in 0 < z 0 < 5 dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). We explore two extreme hypothetical case-studies: a dust-poor early Universe model, where DSFGs contribute negligibly (< 10%) to the integrated star-formation rate density at z > 4, and an alternate dust-rich early Universe model, where DSFGs dominate > 90% of z > 4 star-formation. We find that current submm/mm datasets do not clearly rule out either of these extreme models. We suggest that future surveys at 2 mm – both from ALMA and single-dish facilities – will be crucial to measuring the IRLF beyond z > 4.

We present the catalogue of Radio sources associated with Optical Galaxies and having Unresolved or Extended morphologies I (ROGUE I). It was generated by cross-matching galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR 7) as well as radio sources from the First Images of Radio Sky at Twenty Centimetre (FIRST) and the National Radio Astronomical Observatory VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalogues. We created the largest handmade catalogue of visually classified radio objects and associated with them optical host galaxies, containing 32,616 galaxies with a FIRST core within 3 arcsec of the optical position. All listed objects possess the good quality SDSS DR 7 spectra with the signal-to-noise ratio > 10 and spectroscopic redshifts up to z = 0.6. The radio morphology classification was performed by a visual examination of the FIRST and the NVSS contour maps overlaid on a DSS image, while an optical morphology classification was based on the 120 arcsec snapshot images from SDSS DR 7.

The majority of radio galaxies in ROGUE I, i.e. ∼ 93%, are unresolved (compact or elongated), while the rest of them exhibit extended morphologies, such as Fanaroff-Riley (FR) type I, II, and hybrid, wide-angle tail, narrow-angle tail, head-tail sources, and sources with intermittent or reoriented jet activity, i.e. double–double, X–shaped, and Z–shaped. Most of FR IIs have low radio luminosities, comparable to the luminosities of FR Is. Moreover, due to visual check of all radio maps and optical images, we were able to discover or reclassify a number of radio objects as giant, double–double, X–shaped, and Z–shaped radio galaxies. The presented sample can serve as a database for training automatic methods of identification and classification of optical and radio galaxies.

At energies approaching the Planck energy scale 1019GeV, several quantum-gravity theories predict that familiar concepts such as Lorentz (LIV) symmetry can be broken. Such extreme energies are currently unreachable by experiments on Earth, but for photons traveling over cosmological distances the accumulated deviations from the Lorentz symmetry may be measurable using the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). To study the spectral hardening feature observed in some VHE gamma-ray blazars, we calculate the reduction of the EBL gamma-gamma opacity due to the existence of underdense regions along the line of sight to VHE -gamma ray sources and we compared with the possibility of a LIV signature. Considering the LIV effect, we found that the cosmic opacity for VHE-gamma rays with energy more than 10 TeV can be strongly reduced. I will further discuss the impact of LIV on the Compton scattering process, and how future CTA observations may open an exciting window on studies of the fundamental physics.
