In this poster we present a study of the orientation of the church of San Adrián de Sasabé in Borau, Huesca (Spain) in a practical way. This church is a characteristic Romanesque construction, predominant in the High Middle Ages, mainly in southwestern Europe.

The apse of Romanesque churches are oriented towards the east. But, in some churches, the apse has three windows and these are oriented in the direction of the sunrises on the days of the solstices and equinoxes. But sunrises and sunsets depend on the latitude of the place.

The church of San Adrián de Sasabé, the object of our study, has three windows in the apse, which allows us to carry out the necessary calculations to determine its orientation with precision outside the church.

By virtue of the physical, chemical and dynamical characteristics of asteroids, researchers gain insight into the formation and evolution of our Solar system. Since these objects do not undergo any changes, or the changes during the Solar system evolution are insignificant, we are certain they carry important information regarding the formation of our planetary system and its evolution. Knowing the spectral class of an asteroid is crucial for determining its chemical properties. In our work the spectral classification was done on several asteroids by comparing their spectra with laboratory spectra. We determined spectral types of the asteroids by the overall shapes of the spectra between 450 nm and 700 nm. Increasing the number of asteroids with known rotation period, shapes and spectra enriches the asteroid database of physical and dynamical characteristics of asteroid population.

We imaged the galaxy NGC 7020 with Gemini and GMOS-S interference filters centered on the Hα emission line and nearby continuum in order to detect and quantify the HII regions. Among about 200 HII regions, we detected two Hα emitting plumes or arms emerging from the galactic nucleus which, together with the nuclear emission, might indicate a process of feedback from the central region.

We report results from a multi-frequency investigation of very nearby accreting supermassive black holes. We seek to test the hypothesis that imprints of AGN feedback are present at z ˜ 0. Our sample contains about 130 AGN which were chosen to have redshifts less than 0.02, so our optical imaging typically has several spatial resolution elements across the host galaxy. In addition to optical IFU measurements for all the 130 objects, we have GMRT and archival VLA imaging for subsets of the sample, and also ATCA, ASTROSAT and Chandra observations for select objects. We present our most recent results based on the multi-frequency data, for the systematics of the sample as a whole and on individual objects, that includes a binary black hole precursor.

This study focuses on spectral energy distributions and light-curves of blazars and radio galaxies, and the testing of the existing models with a view to appropriately predict a new model that will nearly accurately present the nature of the energy outflows of these super-massive bodies. Understanding blazar emission is very important as it relates more directly to the physics of the AGN’s central black hole. X-ray, radio and gamma-ray wavelength range data on blazars and radio galaxies from archived data has been collected and a detailed investigation of the spectral energy distribution patterns of the blazars and radio galaxies carried out so as to fit the data in the various models. The results of this investigation will be discussed in detail in this presentation.

Red Nugget galaxies found at high-z have analogues in the Local Universe which are called relic galaxies. Because of their proximity to Earth, the relics allow a more detailed analysis of their properties and can help us understand the formation of massive early-type galaxies, since Red Nuggets could be their first phase of formation. The main goal of this work is to characterize the structure and morphology of candidates and confirmed relic galaxies in the Local Universe to further search for similar objects observationally and within cosmological simulations.

As a result of collisions during their lifetimes, asteroids have a large variety of different shapes. It is believed that high velocity collisions or rotational spin-up of asteroids continuously replenish the Sun’s zodiacal cloud and debris disks around extrasolar planets (Jewitt (2010)). Knowledge of the spin and shape parameters of the asteroids is very important for understanding collision asteroid processes. Lately photometric observations of asteroids showed that variations in brightness are not accompanied by variations in colour index which indicate that the shape of the lightcurve is caused by varying illuminations of the asteroid surface rather than albedo variations over the surface. This conclusion became possible when photometric investigations were combined with laboratory experiments (Dunlap (1971)). In this article using the convex lightcurve inversion method we obtained the sense of rotation, pole solutions and preliminary shape of 901 Brunsia.

This contribution summarizes the reconstruction of historical constellations. It is based on studies of classics, philologies, history of science and history of art. In the given brevity, I can only sketch the strategic, scientific and educational reasons.

Low-frequency radio emission allows powerful active galactic nuclei (AGN) to be selected in a way that is unaffected by dust obscuration and orientation of the jet axis. It also reveals past activity (e.g. radio lobes) that may not be evident at higher frequencies. Currently, there are too few “radio-loud” galaxies for robust studies in terms of redshift-evolution and/or environment. Hence our use of new observations from the Murchison Widefield Array (the SKA-Low precursor), over the southern sky, to construct the GLEAM 4-Jy Sample (1,860 sources at S151MHz > 4 Jy). This sample is dominated by AGN and is 10 times larger than the heavily relied-upon 3CRR sample (173 sources at S178MHz > 10 Jy) of the northern hemisphere. In order to understand how AGN influence their surroundings and the way galaxies evolve, we first need to correctly identify the galaxy hosting the radio emission. This has now been completed for the GLEAM 4-Jy Sample – through repeated visual inspection and extensive checks against the literature – forming a valuable, legacy dataset for investigating relativistic jets and their interplay with the environment.

Red Geysers are quiescent galaxies that show a bi-polar outflow, but the mechanism that produces this outflow is still unclear. Using MaNGA data, we find that Red Geysers correspond to ∼1.6% of the sample of galaxies already observed by MaNGA. About ∼16% of the Red Geysers show clear evidence of Active Galactic Nuclei, as revealed by emission-line ratios.

Most interstellar and planetary environments are suffused by a continuous flux of several types of ionizing radiation, including cosmic rays, stellar winds, x-rays, and gamma-rays from radionuclide decay. There is now a large body of experimental work showing that these kinds of radiation can trigger significant physicochemical changes in ices, including the dissociation of species (radiolysis), sputtering of surface species, and ice heating. Even so, modeling the chemical effects that result from interactions between ionizing radiation and interstellar dust grain ice mantles has proven challenging due to the complexity and variety of the underlying physical processes. To address this shortcoming, we have developed a method whereby such effects could easily be included in standard rate-equations-based astrochemical models. Here, we describe how such models, thus improved, can fruitfully be used to simulate experiments in order to better understand bulk chemistry at low temperatures.

The Astronomical Society of Japan has started authorization of Japan Astronomical Heritage since 2018. The society certificates two or three sites/materials/literature every year not only for preservation but also for utilization. The certification influences citizens and local governments, and stimulates various movements. The idea of national astronomical heritage will help to preserve valuable properties of each country and to promote the utilization.

Nuclear black holes in dwarf galaxies are important for understanding the low end of the supermassive black hole mass distribution and the black hole-host galaxy scaling relations. IC 750 is a rare system which hosts an AGN, found in ˜0.5% of dwarf galaxies, with circumnuclear 22 GHz water maser emission, found in ˜3–5% of Type 2 AGNs. Water masers, the only known tracer of warm, dense gas in the center parsec of AGNs resolvable in position and velocity, provide the most precise and accurate mass measurements of SMBHs outside the local group. We have mapped the maser emission in IC 750 and find that it traces a nearly edge-on warped disk, 0.2 pc in diameter. The central black hole has an upper limit mass of ˜1 × 105 M⊙ and a best fit mass of ˜8 × 104 M⊙, one to two orders of magnitude below what is expected from black hole-galaxy scaling relations. This has implications for models of black hole seed formation in the early universe, the growth of black holes, and their co-evolution with their host galaxies.

Since the advent of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), more attention has been paid on the ≲100 pc scale circumnuclear disk (CND) to reveal feeding and feedback processes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). By using cold molecular CO and atomic C0 emission line observations, we have revealed that there are multi-component gas dynamical flows around the AGN of the Circinus galaxy, which may explain the physical origin of the AGN torus. In the luminous Seyfert galaxy NGC 7469, we found that [CI](1–0) line is extraordinary bright relative to CO lines (for example J 2−1), manifesting the physical/chemical influence of the AGN on the surrounding gas in the form of X-ray dominated region (XDR).

The aim of this work is to understand the stability and investigate the chemical evolution of formamide ice due to thermal hydrogenation at simulated interstellar conditions.

Sunspot observations, normally made with small telescopes during the last four centuries, should be considered a world heritage for many reasons including purely scientific aspects and other cultural and social reasons. Here, these aspects are briefly reviewed.

Presented here, is a summary of discussions at African Astronomical Society (AfAS) Science Business Meeting, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 10-11 October 2019. This summary was deliberated with delegates of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Symposium 356, during a lunch session of the meeting.

Reactions on carbonaceous surfaces play an important role in processes such as H2 formation in the interstellar medium. We have investigated the adsorption of C2 molecules on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface and then exposed them to a beam of deuterium atoms in order to investigate the formation of deuterated fullerenes. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to probe the adsorbed molecules and their deuteration. Deuteration of C2 films results in increased thermal stability of the film, relative to films of pristine C2, along with an evolution towards higher deuterated species. The STM data provide confirmatory evidence for the formation of deuterated fullerene species.

Influence of astronomy education, in other disciplines, can give some possible explanation even in the history field. We propose to link astronomy, history and heritage through Big Data, without a telescope.

If we look to the Dacian Draco flag we can find a similitude with Draco constellation and that was a little bit intrigue. In the era of digitalization we can use computers to see back in time.

We serendipitously found an intriguing Extended Emission Line Region (EELR) near the quiescent and massive early-type Mrk 1172, with a projected extension of approximately 14 × 14 kpc. Its irregular shape, high gas content, strong emission lines and proximity to an isolated possible faded quasar raise questions about the ionization of this gas and the nature of this object. Analyzing the stellar population in both objects we observe that the EELR has a dominance of young-intermediate and intermediate stellar populations (200 Myr < t < 1 Gyr) with significant star formation activity, while Mrk 1172 is dominated by old stellar population (t > 5 Gyr). BPT diagnostic diagrams indicate that the gas in the EELR is photoionized by hot massive stars rather than by a hard radiation field or by shocks. Further analysis on abundances of the gas and its kinematics shall be performed to better comprehend the nature of this object and how it is interacting with Mrk 1172.
