Over 2/3 of all star formation in the Universe occurs in gas-rich, super-high pressure clumpy galaxies in the epoch of redshift z ∼ 1 – 3. However, because these galaxies are so distant we are limited in the information available to study the properties of star formation and gas in these systems. I will present results using a sample of extremely rare, nearby galaxies (called DYNAMO) that are very well matched in gas fraction (fgas ∼ 20 – 80%), kinematics (rotating disks with velocity dispersions ranging 20 – 100 km/s), structure (exponential disks) and morphology (clumpy star formation) to high-z main-sequence galaxies. We therefore use DYNAMO galaxies as laboratories to study the processes inside galaxies in the dominate mode of star formation in the Universe. In this talk I will report on results from our programs with HST, ALMA, Keck, and NOEMA for DYNAMO galaxies that are aimed at testing models of star formation. We have discovered of an inverse relationship between gas velocity dispersion and molecular gas depletion time. This correlation is directly predicted by theories of feedback-regulated star formation; conversely, predictions of models in which turbulence is driven by gravity only are not consistent with our data. I will also show that feedback-regulated star formation can explain the redshift evolution of galaxy star formation efficiency. I will also present results from a recently acquired map of CO(2-1) in a clumpy galaxy with resolution less than 200 pc. With maps such as these we can begin to study these super giant star forming clumps at scales that are more comparable to local surveys. I will show results for the star formation efficiency of clumps, the boundedness of clumps of molecular gas, and discuss links between star formation efficiency and formation of clumps of stellar mass. The details of clumpy systems are a direct constraint of the results of simulations, especially on the nature of feedback in the high density environments of star formation that dominate the early Universe.

Studying unidentified γ-ray sources is important as they may hide new discoveries. We conducted a multiwavelength analysis of 13 unidentified Fermi-LAT sources in the 3FGL catalogue that have no known counterparts (Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources, UnIDs). The sample was selected for sources that have a single radio and X-ray candidate counterpart in their uncertainty ellipses. The purpose of this study is to find a possible blazar signature and to model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the selected sources using an empirical log parabolic model. The results show that the synchrotron emission of all sources peaks in the infrared (IR) band and that the high-energy emission peaks in MeV to GeV bands. The SEDs of sources in our sample are all blazar like. In addition, the peak position of the sample reveals that 6 sources (46.2%) are Low Synchrotron Peaked (LSP) blazars, 4 (30.8%) of them are High Synchrotron Peaked (HSP) blazars, while 3 of them (23.0%) are Intermediate Synchrotron Peaked (ISP) blazars.

In the current scenario of galaxy evolution, supermassive black holes (SMBH) are present in almost all galaxies. To trigger nuclear activity, large amounts of material have to fall from kpc to pc and even smaller scales. Hence, an efficient angular momentum removal mechanism is needed. A growing black hole could still not be fixed in the gravitational potential well of the galaxy. This can be observed as a break in the symmetry between the global structure of the galaxy and the central source and could be part of the mechanism that drives material from the last hundred parsecs onto accretion in the SMBH. We present spatial profile decomposition of 16 galaxies observed with GNIRS (Gemini North) in the Klong band. We have been able to measure off-centerings in 3 of 16 galaxies. We found a possible correlation between the presence of an off-centering and the SMBH mass.

Intensive week-long Summer Schools in Statistics for Astronomers were initiated at Penn State in 2005 and have been continued annually. Due to their popularity and high demand, additional full summer schools have been organized in India, Brazil, Space Telescope Science Institute.

The Summer Schools seek to give a broad exposure to fundamental concepts and a wide range of resulting methods across many fields of statistics. The Summer Schools in statistics and data analysis for young astronomers present concepts and methodologies with hands on tutorials using the data from astronomical surveys.

Despite the many amazing advances that have occurred in the space sciences (planetary science, heliophysics, astronomy, and cosmology) these subjects continue to play minor roles in pre-collegiate science education. Similarly, the Earth sciences are woefully under-represented in most school science programs – despite their vital relevance to our physical well-being. Some countries have educational standards that formally prioritize the Earth & space sciences as much as the physical and life sciences, but even they fail to actualize their mandated priorities. I contend that better coordination and advancement of Earth & space science education at the national, state, society, and educator levels would lead to better educational outcomes worldwide.

Laboratory experiments are essential to support the interpretation of astronomical observations and space mission data. Here we present a new experimental setup to characterize in the Vis-MIR range in both reflection and transmission modes astrophysically-relevant frozen volatiles deposited at low temperature and exposed to ion bombardment.

We present a systematic study of gamma-ray blazar candidates based on a sample of 40 objects taken from the WIBR catalogue. By using a likelihood analysis, 26 of the 40 sources showed significant gamma-ray signatures ⩾ 3σ. Using high-energy test statistics (TS) maps, we confirm 8 sources, which are completely new, and show another 15 promising γ-ray candidates. The results from this analysis show that a multi-frequency approach can help to improve the current description of the gamma-ray sky.

Jellyfish galaxies are the most extreme examples of ram pressure stripping (RPS). They represent an important path in the morphological change and quenching in galaxy clusters, however they are still not well characterised morphologically and finding them is a complex task based mainly on visual inspection. We present a study on the properties of a large sample of jellyfish candidates in the multi-cluster system A901/2. We find evidence that the multi-cluster is triggering RPS events in preferential regions in the system and that these galaxies have enhanced specific star formation rates. We also use the software Morfometryka in order to analyse the unique morphometric features in jellyfish galaxies providing a better comprehension of their physical state and future. This can help unravel the physical processes behind such extreme morphologies as well as possibly automatising the search for jellyfish galaxy candidates in large surveys in the next era of instruments.

We investigated how the most common dusty torus models reproduce both the 10 and 18μm silicate emission features observed in the nuclear infrared (IR) Spitzer spectrum of type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN). We use a sample of type 1 AGN for which the Spitzer spectrum is mostly dominated by the emission of the AGN (>80%), and the 10μm silicate emission feature is prominent (1σSi10μm > 0.28). The models are the smooth dusty torus models from Fritz et al., the clumpy dusty torus models from Nenkova et al. and Hoenig et al., the two-phase media torus model from Stalevski et al., and the disk+outflow model from Hoenig et al. These models differ by assuming either different geometry or dust composition. We found that in general, all models have difficulties reproducing the shape and peak of the silicate emission features, but the disk+outflow model is the best reproducing the AGN-dominated Spitzer spectrum.

Recent laboratory studies have shown that PAH cations dehydrogenate to give charged molecules consisting of only carbon atoms. Our experiments using ion-trap time-of-flight mass spectrometry show that a key group of photodissociation fragments from the coronene cation $({{\rm{C}}_{24}}{\rm{H}}_{12}^ + )$ are carbon clusters of ${\rm{C}}_n^ +$ composition. Density functional theory calculations shed light onto potential dissociation pathways leading up to the main ${\rm{C}}_{11}^ +$ and ${\rm{C}}_{12}^ +$ clusters, and highlight the importance of pentagon formations in the carbon backbone of the precursor molecule in generating certain fragments.

In the local Universe there exists a rare population of compact galaxies resembling the high-redshift quiescent population in mass and size. It has been found that some of these objects have survived largely unchanged since their formation at high-z. They are called relic galaxies. With the goal of finding relic galaxies, we searched the SDSS-MaNGA DR15 release for massive compact galaxies. We find that massive compact galaxies are mostly composed of old, metal-rich and alpha enhanced stellar populations. In terms of kinematics, massive compact galaxies show ordered rotation in their velocity fields and σ* profiles rising towards the center. They are predominantly fast rotators and show increased rotational support when compared to a mass-matched control sample of average-sized early-type galaxies. These properties are consistent with these objects being relic galaxies. However, to confirm their relic status, we need to probe larger radii (⪎3Re) than probed with the current data.

Understanding the interplay between the phenomena of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and starbursts remains an open issue in studies of galaxy evolution. The galaxy NGC 34 is the remnant of the merger of two former gas-rich disc galaxies and it also hosts a strong nuclear starburst. In this work, we map the ionized and molecular gas present in the nuclear regions of the galaxy NGC 34 using adaptive optics (AO) assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unity (IFU) observations. Our main goals are to better constrain the energy source of this object and to use NGC 34 as a laboratory to probe the AGN-starburst connection in the context of galaxy evolution and AGN feeding and feedback processes.

This work presents the motivation, history and current status of the Primera Luz initiative, a long-term educational project run by researchers and professionals of the Astronomy Center (CITEVA) at Universidad de Antofagasta (UA, Chile), primarily focused on connecting Astronomy with the people living in the Region of Antofagasta (Chile) but producing results designed to be shared with international audiences.

We address the effect of orientation of the accretion disk plane and the geometry of the broad line region (BLR) in the context of understanding the distribution of quasars along their Main Sequence. We utilize the photoionization code CLOUDY to model the BLR, incorporating the ‘un-constant’ virial factor. We show the preliminary results of the analysis to highlight the co-dependence of the Eigenvector 1 parameter, RFeII on the broad HβFWHM (i.e. the line dispersion) and the inclination angle (θ), assuming fixed values for the Eddington ratio (Lbol/ LEdd), black hole mass (MBH), spectral energy distribution (SED) shape, cloud density (nH) and composition.†

In this work, we study the optical properties of 58 CSS/GPS radio sources selected from the literature in order to determine the impact of the radio-jet in the circumnuclear environment of these objects. We obtained optical spectra for all sources from SDSS-DR12 and performed a stellar population synthesis using the Starlight code. Our results indicate that the sample is dominated by intermediate to old stellar populations and there is no strong correlation between optical and radio properties of these sources.

The nearby Magellanic Clouds system covers more than 200 square degrees on the sky. Much of it has been mapped across the electromagnetic spectrum at high angular resolution and sensitivity –X-ray (XMM-Newton), UV (UVIT), optical (SMASH), IR (VISTA, WISE, Spitzer, Herschel), radio (ATCA, ASKAP, MeerKAT). This provides us with an excellent dataset to explore the galaxy populations behind the stellar-rich Magellanic Clouds. We seek to identify and characterise AGN via machine learning algorithms on this exquisite data set. Our project focuses not on establishing sequences and distributions of common types of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), but seeks to identify extreme examples, building on the recent accidental discoveries of unique AGN behind the Magellanic Clouds.

The role of H2 in forming interstellar complex organics is still not clear due to the high activation energies required for “non-energetic” association reactions. In this work, we investigated the potential contribution of H2 to the hydrogenated species (HnNCO) formation on dust grains when the “energetic” processing is involved. The goal is to test whether an additional hydrogenation pathway is possible upon UV irradiation of a CO:H2 ice mixture. It is proposed that the electronically excited carbon monoxide (CO*) induced by UV-photons can react with a ground-state H2 to form HCO, ultimately enhancing the production of COMs in ice mantle.

Spectroscopic observations of galaxies at high redshift has recently been revolutionised by the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument in operation at the VLT since 2014. Thanks to its unrivalled capabilities, MUSE has been able to increase by an order of magnitude the number of spectroscopic redshifts in these fields. The most spectacular increase is at high redshift (z > 3), where MUSE was able to detect thousands of Lyman-alpha emitters. In the deepest exposures, MUSE is even able to goes beyond the limiting magnitude of the deepest HST exposures. These observations have led to a breakthrough in our understanding of the high redshift universe: e.g. the discovery of Lyman-alpha emission from the circumgalactic medium around individual galaxies, the role and property of low mass galaxies. In this talk I will present the latest results obtained with the MUSE observations of the Hubble deep and ultra-deep fields.

This contribution presents the ongoing work to develop the Sensing the Dynamic Universe (SDU) webpage elements, based on the sonoUno framework, a user centered software for sonification of astronomical data. The SDU provides an inclusive experience that transcends the approach of assuming and limiting design based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and ISO recommendations.

We present the Catalogue of High REsolution Spectra of Obscured Sources (CHRESOS) from the XMM-Newton Science Archive. It comprises soft X-ray emission-lines from C to Si and the Fe 3C and Fe 3G L-shell transitions. Here, we concentrate on the oxygen emission-lines O VII(f) and O VIII Lyα to shed light onto the physical processes with which their formation can be related to: active galactic nucleus vs. star-forming regions. We are analysing the relationships between the oxygen lines and the luminosities of: [OIII]λ5007, [OIV]25.89μm, MIR-12μm, FIR-60μm, FIR-100μm, and hard X-rays continuum bands.
