We describe a comprehensive multi-wavelength and multi-faceted program to understand a class of quasars we call post-starburst quasars, which may represent an evolutionary phase in mutual galaxy/black hole evolution.

There is compelling observational evidence that globular clusters (GCs) are quite complex objects. A growing body of photometric results indicate that the evolutionary sequences are not simply isochrones in the observational plane -as believed until a few years ago- from the main sequence, to the subgiant, giant, and horizontal branches. The strongest indication of complexity comes however from the chemistry, from internal dispersion in iron abundance in a few cases, and in light elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, etc.) in all GCs. This universality means that the complexity is intrinsic to the GCs and is most probably related to their formation mechanisms. The extent of the variations in light elements abundances is dependent on the GC mass, but mass is not the only modulating factor; metallicity, age, and possibly orbit can play a role. Finally, one of the many consequences of this new way of looking at GCs is that their stars may show different He contents.

We present results from numerical simulations of a Jupiter family comet (JFC) population (orbital periods P < 20 yr and Tisserand parameters in the range 2 < T < 3.1) originated in the Scattered Disk and transferred to the Jupiter's zone through gravitational interactions with the Jovian planets. We shall call ‘non-JFCs’ those comets coming from the same source, but that do not fulfill the previous criteria (mainly because they have periods P > 20 yr). We have carried out series of numerical simulations of fictitious comets with a purely dynamical model and also with a more complete dynamical - physical model that includes besides nongravitational forces, sublimation and splitting mechanisms. We obtained better fits with models including physical effects, and in particular our best fits are for four splitting models with a relative weak dependence on q, and a mass loss in every splitting event that is smaller/greater for higher/lower frequencies respectively. The mean lifetime of JFCs with radii R > 1 km and q < 1.5 AU is found to be of about 150-200 revolutions (~103 yr). We find a total population of JFCs with radii R > 1 km within Jupiter's zone of 450 ± 50 and a mean lifetime of about 150-200 revolutions (~103 yr) for those getting q < 1.5 AU. The population of JFCs + non-JFCs with radii R > 1 km in Jupiter-crossing orbits may be about ~2,250 ± 250. Most of non-JFCs have perihelia close to Jupiter's orbit.

We also present maps of the densest zones of JFCs in the orbital element space.

We present the largest sample available to date of lithium abundances in extremely metal poor (EMP) Halo dwarfs. Four Teff estimators are used, including IRFM and Hα wings fitting against 3D hydrodynamical synthetic profiles. Lithium abundances are computed by means of 1D and 3D-hydrodynamical NLTE computations. Below [Fe/H]~−3, a strong positive correlation of A(Li) with [Fe/H] appears, not influenced by the choice of the Teff estimator. A linear fit finds a slope of about 0.30 dex in A(Li) per dex in [Fe/H], significant to 2–3 σ, and consistent within 1 σ among all the Teff estimators. The scatter in A(Li) increases significantly below [Fe/H]~−3. Above, the plateau lies at 〈A(Li)3D, NLTE〉 = 2.199 ± 0.086. If the primordial A(Li) is the one derived from standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), it appears difficult to envision a single depletion phenomenon producing a thin, metallicity independent plateau above [Fe/H] = −2.8, and a highly scattered, metallicity dependent distribution below.

Simple gravitational lens models usually suffice to reproduce the positions of lensed quasar images, but they have problems to reproduce their optical flux ratios. The so-called flux ratio anomalies are thought to be produced by small-scale structure in the lens galaxies (microlensing).

We present spot activity of the K2V pre-main-sequence star PW And based on the high-resolution spectroscopic data obtained at Xinglong station and BOAO in 2005 November and December. Using the Least-Squares Deconvolution method, we have derived time series of composite profiles of PW And with high signal to noise ratio. These have been used to reconstruct its starspot pattern via the Doppler imaging method. The result shows that intermediate to high-latitude spots are the dominant features and weak low-latitude spots also appear. Comparing Doppler images from two data subsets, it can be found that almost no difference between two images exists except the small position evolution of weak low-latitude spots, which suggests that the intermediate to high-latitude spots have longer lifetimes than one month, and the low-latitude spots have shorter lifetimes.

The last decade has seen enormous progress in understanding the structure of the Milky Way and neighboring galaxies via the production of large-scale digital surveys of the sky like 2MASS and SDSS, as well as specialized, counterpart imaging surveys of other Local Group systems. Apart from providing snaphots of galaxy structure, these “cartographic” surveys lend insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies when supplemented with additional data (e.g., spectroscopy, astrometry) and when referenced to theoretical models and simulations of galaxy evolution. These increasingly sophisticated simulations are making ever more specific predictions about the detailed chemistry and dynamics of stellar populations in galaxies. To fully exploit, test and constrain these theoretical ventures demands similar commitments of observational effort as has been plied into the previous imaging surveys to fill out other dimensions of parameter space with statistically significant intensity. Fortunately the future of large-scale stellar population studies is bright with a number of grand projects on the horizon that collectively will contribute a breathtaking volume of information on individual stars in Local Group galaxies. These projects include: (1) additional imaging surveys, such as Pan-STARRS, SkyMapper and LSST, which, apart from providing deep, multicolor imaging, yield time series data useful for revealing variable stars (including critical standard candles, like RR Lyrae variables) and creating large-scale, deep proper motion catalogs; (2) higher accuracy, space-based astrometric missions, such as Gaia and SIM-Lite, which stand to provide critical, high precision dynamical data on stars in the Milky Way and its satellites; and (3) large-scale spectroscopic surveys provided by RAVE, APOGEE, HERMES, LAMOST, and the Gaia spectrometer, which will yield not only enormous numbers of stellar radial velocities, but extremely comprehensive views of the chemistry of stellar populations. Meanwhile, previously dust-obscured regions of the Milky Way will continue to be systematically exposed via large infrared surveys underway or on the way, such as the various GLIMPSE surveys from Spitzer's IRAC instrument, UKIDSS, APOGEE, JASMINE and WISE.

We present a review of the different methods currently developed to determine the deflection of light rays due to gravity. The aim of these methods is primarily to calculate the angular distances with an accuracy of the order of microarcsecond.

They came to the Big Island from as far away as Murrumbeena, Australia, and as near by as Hilo, Hawaii. They were progeny of Scottish coal miners, French physicists, Chicago truck drivers, Japanese samurai and Big Island cane workers. Together, these men and women would build and commission one of the most dynamic and productive 3.6 meter telescopes in the world that remains in the forefront of science and technology. The CFHT oral history DVD preserves the stories of the first decade and a half of the observatory.

Starburst clusters in the Milky Way have the advantage that individual stars down to subsolar masses can be resolved. Thus far, field contamination along the line of sight towards the Galactic Centre and spiral arms was the limiting factor in deriving an unbiased census of the stellar population in Milky Way starbursts and, hence, the spatial extent and initial mass function in starburst clusters. As the next generation of telescopes with higher sensitivity and spatial resolution are being developed, these resolved clusters become increasingly important as templates for young, massive extragalactic systems, which will be resolved at the high-mass end of the stellar mass function. With the aim to obtain a uniform characterisation of starburst cluster properties in the Milky Way, we have initiated a proper-motion membership survey. This technique became feasible for clusters out to distances of 8 kpc with diffraction-limited imaging using adaptive optics from the ground and with Hubble Space Telescope from space.

Type 2 QSOs (QSO2s) are intrinsically luminous QSOs embedded in dusty environments. In this work, we study the radio, optical, and soft X-ray properties of 887 optically selected [O III]-based QSO2s (Reyes et al. 2008) at z<0.83 to investigate the connection between QSO2s and their environments. We use SDSS data to measure the luminosity-limited galaxy counts in a volume centered on each QSO2 and defined by Δ z<0.1 (based on photometric redshifts) and within a projected distance of 1.5 Mpc of the QSO2 (δ1.5Mpc). We used ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) data to estimate the X-ray excess. Hsu & Chen (2010), after correcting for Galactic absorption, obtain a lower limit for the intrinsic neutral hydrogen column density (NH) toward each of the QSO2s. About 50% of these sources have NH > 1022 cm−2. We take this value as a threshold to subdivide QSO2s into high- and low-NH groups, and compare their environments. The distributions δ1.5Mpc of the two populations show that, in regions of higher galaxy density, QSO2s are dominated by the high-NH population (Figure 1), suggesting a closer connection between more obscured QSO2s and surrounding galaxies.

It is well known that chromospheric observations in the hydrogen alpha line give relevant information about solar flares, plages and protuberances, among other typical features of the Sun. From 1998 to 2006, the HAlpha Solar Telescope of Argentina (HASTA) has provided solar images to the scientific community with the technological resources available at that time. Starting in 2007, major improvements have been incorporated, like a new CCD camera with enhanced spatial and temporal resolution, filter replacement, the automatic focusing system, and a new flat-fielding procedure. The hardware changes also called for software improvements, and a new solar-flare classification routine was implemented. At present, the Félix Aguilar Observatory (OAFA) of the University of San Juan (UNSJ) has a permanent staff of observers which now permits continuous solar monitoring. We expect that all these advances will allow to analyze chromospheric solar activity, especially solar flares, in more detail.

Relativistic modelling of rotational motion of extended bodies represents one of the most complicated problems of Applied Relativity. The relativistic reference systems of IAU (2000) give a suitable theoretical framework for such a modelling. Recent developments in the post-Newtonian theory of Earth rotation in the limit of rigidly rotating multipoles are reported below. All components of the theory are summarized and the results are demonstrated. The experience with the relativistic Earth rotation theory can be directly applied to model the rotational motion of other celestial bodies. The high-precision theories of rotation of the Moon, Mars and Mercury can be expected to be of interest in the near future.

A model of an isolated dwarf spherical galaxy (dSph) is considered in its chemo-dynamical evolution with time. The system is composed by 3 γ-model density profiles: gas, stellar and dark matter, and it is realized in a spherical symmetric equilibrium configuration. The total masses used in our simulations are covering the dwarf galaxies mass range. The stability of this configuration is first tested for the system evolving under the gravity effect alone and then evolved taking into account for the most relevant stellar astrophysical processes implemented with a Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic approach. The two different kinds of evolution are compared. The dark matter evolves naturally from a centrally cuspy density profile into a flatter one within a timescale of several Gyr. The effect manifests itself naturally, without any tuned initial conditions, as soon as few standard criteria on star formation are assumedand the SN feedback on the ISM has been adopted the prescription in (Cioffi & Shull 1991) and (Bradamante et al. 1998). This result is expected to be a possible natural explanation for the discrepancy between observations that want flatter dark matter profiles (e.g. de Block 2005), and N-body simulations that predict cuspy dark matter profiles (Navarro et al. 1997). Chemical considerations are presented as a tool to follow with observational parameters the theory predictions.

We have performed deep high-dispersion spectroscopy to examine enhancement of s-process elements in the exremely metal-poor ([Ar/H]~−2.1) halo planetary nebulae H4-1 and BoBn1 using the 8.2-m Subaru telescope/High-Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS). We have detected several emission lines of s-process elements in H4-1 and BoBn1, and we have found that the enhancement of heavy s-process elements in these objects is comparable with that in s-process enhanced CEMP stars with [Fe/H]>−2.5. The C- and N-rich abundances of H4-1 and BoBn1 might be explained by binary evolution models. We have detected 5 fluorine lines in BoBn1. The re-estimated F abundance using these lines is [F/H]=+1.4±0.1.

For nearby K dwarfs, the broadening of the observed Main Sequence at low metallicities is much narrower than expected from isochrones with the standard helium–to–metal enrichment ratio ΔY/ΔZ~2. A much higher value, of order 10, is formally needed to reproduce the observed broadening, but it returns helium abundances in awkward contrast with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. This steep enrichment ratio resembles, on a milder scale, the very high ΔY/ΔZ estimated from the multiple Main Sequences observed in some metal-poor Globular Clusters. We argue that a revision of low Main Sequence stellar models, suggested from nearby stars, could help to reduce the overwhelmingly high ΔY/ΔZ deduced so far for those clusters. Under the most favourable assumptions, the estimated helium content for the enriched populations may decrease from Y ≃ 0.4 to as low as Y ≃ 0.3, with intermediate values being plausible.

Astronomy as one of the oldest sciences has influenced and spurred steady development of society and culture. Inherent superstitious beliefs and their related rituals that have been hampering the progress and prosperity of nations have been dispelled and reduced considerably through the promotion of astronomical activities at all levels of the society. For disseminating basic knowledge and logic of astronomical facts that were deemed important for the development of our society, various programmes have been conducted through mass media. Many talk programmes, seminars and star parties were organised in different places. Our experiences when planning and executing such programmes are summarised and illustrated. The effectiveness of our programmes with the participation of general public is discussed in detail. Positive results of our activities that have contributed towards creation of substantial awareness of astronomy for the development of our society in Nepal are explained.

Galactic globular cluster (GC) stars exhibit abundance patterns that are not shared by their field counterparts, namely the well-documented O–Na, C–N and Mg–Al anticorrelations. Recent observations provide compelling evidence that these abundance anomalies were already present in the intracluster gas from which the presently observed stars formed. The current explanation is that the gas was polluted very early in the history of the GC by material processed through H burning at high temperatures and then lost by stars more massive than the long-lived stars we still observe today. However the ‘polluters’ have not yet been unambiguously identified. Most studies have focused on asymptotic giant brach stars, but rotating massive stars present an interesting alternative. Here, we critically analyse the pros and cons of both potential stellar polluters. We discuss the constraints that the observational data provide on stellar nucleosynthesis and hydrodynamics, as well as on the formation and early evolution of very massive star clusters.

Due to their brightness in infrared, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are in important evolutionary stage to be understood at this wavelength. In particular, in next decades, when the infrared optimised telescopes, such as the JWST and the ELT are in operation, it will be essential to include the AGB phase more precisely into the population synthesis models. However, the AGB phase is still one of the remaining major problems in the stellar evolution. This is because the AGB stellar evolution is strongly affected by the mass-loss process from the stars. It is important to describe mass loss more accurately so as to incorporate it into stellar evolutionary models. Recent observations using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) enabled us to make a significant progress in understanding the mass loss from AGB stars. Moreover, the SST large surveys contributed to our understanding of the role of AGB stars in chemical enrichment process in galaxies. Here we present the summary of our recent progress.

Comet-like orbits with low perihelion distances tend to be affected by relativistic effects. In this work we discuss the origin of the relativistic corrections, how they affect the orbital evolution and how to implement these corrections in a numerical integrator. We also propose a model that mimics the principal relativistic effects and, contrary to the original “exact” formula, has low computational cost. Our model is appropriated for numerical simulations but not for precise ephemeris computations.
