For our understanding of the origin and evolution of baryonic matter in the Universe, the Protosolar Cloud (PSC) is of unique importance in two ways: 1) Up to now, many of the naturally occurring nuclides have only been detected in the solar system. 2) Since the time of solar system formation, the Sun and planets have been virtually isolated from the galactic nuclear evolution, and thus the PSC is a galactic sample with a degree of evolution intermediate between the Big Bang and the present.

The abundances of the isotopes of hydrogen and helium in the Protosolar Cloud are primarily derived from composition measurements in the solar wind, the Jovian atmosphere and “planetary noble gases” in meteorites, and also from observations of density profiles inside the Sun. After applying the changes in isotopic and elemental composition resulting from processes in the solar wind, the Sun and Jupiter, PSC abundances of the four lightest stable nuclides are given.

Integrated spectra of star clusters are the best test beds for predictions of evolutionary synthesis models. We present spectral fits of star cluster using a variety of recent models. All models allow good spectral fits, but newer ones tend to be better. Ages estimated through spectral fits are not strongly model dependent, but metallicities can differ a lot from one model to another. For some clusters, multi-population fits suggest a combination of very old (1010 yr) and very young (< 108) populations, an artifact of the lack of old and blue stars in the models.

We developed a new method to obtain absorption line spectra of early-type galaxies at large radii, using integral-field spectrography (IFS). By using the spectrograph as a 'photon-collector' and adding the signal of many individual spaxels together in one spectrum, we obtain sufficient signal-to-noise to measure both stellar kinematics and line strengths at large radii. These can be used to determine the properties of the dark matter halo, as well as the stellar halo population.

Here we derive a formulation connecting the observed variations of the solar diameter to the heliophysics of the photosphere, in particular in connection to the granulation pattern and morphology. The results from the measurements are next used to correlate the variations of the semi-diameter and of estimators of the solar activity along the solar cycle 23. The values obtained strongly support a broader physical description of the photosphere, intertwining the diameter variations with the irradiance, the sunspots, the 10.7 cm radio emission, and to a lesser degree with the integrated magnetic field and with the flares count.

We present a large sample of X-ray selected type 2 QSOs from the XMM–COSMOS survey. Type 2 QSOs are luminous AGN whose central engines are obscured by large amounts of gas and dust. The selection criteria we have used are based on high X-ray luminosity (LX > 1044 erg s−1) and heavy obscuration (NH > 1022 cm−2). We derived stellar masses and star-formation rate estimates for the host galaxies from the best fit of the observed photometry. Type 2 QSOs are generally hosted in massive galaxies with on-going star formation.

Astronomical and cosmological knowledge up to the dawn of modern science was profoundly embedded in myth, religion and superstition. Many of these inventions of the human mind remain today stored in different supports: medieval engravings, illuminated manuscripts, and of course also in old and rare books.

In this study we consider the pre-enrichment of minihalos, and study the impact of metallicity on pre-collapsing minihalos by using the cosmological, N-body simulation code Enzo. The metallicities that we consider are assumed to be the result of pre-enrichment by earlier star formation. In the simulations of 10−3 and 10−1 Z⊙ we see a big difference for the collapse of the minihalo. In the high metallicity case the minihalo is more compact compared to the low metallicity case and we reach higher densities due to the efficient cooling. Also in the high metallicity case the gas cools down to lower temperatures and we see cold, dense gas which indicates a multi-phase ISM. This leads us to think that there is a transition region between metallicities of 10−3 and 10−1 Z⊙ which lowers the mass scale of the next generation of stars. Furthermore, because the gas cools more efficiently in the high metallicity case there is less pressure support against gravity and therefore we see higher velocities.

We analyze a sample of 58 Oort cloud comets (OCCs) (original orbital energies x in the range 0 < x < 100, in units of 10−6 AU−1), plus 45 long-period comets with negative orbital energies or poorly determined or undetermined x, discovered during the period 1999-2007. To analyze the degree of completeness of the sample, we use Everhart's (1967 Astr. J 72, 716) concept of “excess magnitude” (in magnitudes × days), defined as the integrated magnitude excess that a given comet presents over the time above a threshold magnitude for detection. This quantity is a measure of the likelihood that the comet will be finally detected. We define two sub-samples of OCCs: 1) new comets (orbital energies 0 < x < 30) as those whose perihelia can shift from outside to the inner planetary region in a single revolution; and 2) inner cloud comets (orbital energies 30 ≤ x < 100), that come from the inner region of the Oort cloud, and for which external perturbers (essentially galactic tidal forces and passing stars) are not strong enough to allow them to overshoot the Jupiter-Saturn barrier. From the observed comet flux and making allowance for missed discoveries, we find a flux of OCCs brighter than absolute total magnitude 9 of ≃0.65 ± 0.18 per year within Earth's orbit. From this flux, about two-thirds corresponds to new comets and the rest to inner cloud comets. We find striking differences in the q-distribution of these two samples: while new comets appear to follow an uniform q-distribution, inner cloud comets show an increase in the rate of perihelion passages with q.

The celestial Earth's orientation is required for many applications in fundamental astronomy and geodesy; it is currently determined with sub-milliarcsecond accuracy by astro-geodetic observations. Models for that orientation rely on solutions for the rotation of a rigid Earth model and on the geophysical representation of non-rigid Earth effects. Important IAU 2000/2006 resolutions on reference systems have been passed (and endorsed by the IUGG) that recommend a new paradigm and high accuracy models to be used in the transformation from terrestrial to celestial systems. This paper reviews the consequences of these resolutions on the adopted Earth orientation parameters, IAU precession-nutation models and associated nomenclature. It summarizes the fundamental aspects of the current IAU precession-nutation models and reports on the consideration of General Relativity (GR) in the solutions. This shows that the current definitions and nomenclature for Earth's rotation are compliant with GR and that the IAU precession-nutation is compliant with the IAU 2000 definition of the geocentric celestial reference system in the GR framework; however, the underlying Earth's rotation models basically are Newtonian.

We show that we can obtain a good fit to the present-day stellar-mass functions of a large sample of young and old Galactic clusters with a tapered Salpeter power-law distribution function with an exponential truncation of the form dN/dm ∝ mα [1 − exp(−m/mc)β]. The average value of the power-law index α is ~−2.2, very close to the Salpeter value of −2.3, while the characteristic mass, mc, is in the range 0.1–0.6M⊙ and does not seem to vary in any systematic way with the present cluster parameters such as metal abundance, total cluster mass or central concentration. However, the characteristic mass shows a remarkable correlation with the dynamical age of the cluster, namely mc/M⊙ ≃ 0.15 + 0.5 × t3/4dyn, where tdyn is the dynamical time, taken as the ratio of cluster age and dissolution time. The small scatter around this correlation is likely due to uncertainties on the estimated value of tdyn. We attribute the observed trend to the onset of mass segregation through two-body relaxation in a tidal environment, causing preferential loss of low-mass stars from the cluster and hence a drift of the characteristic mass towards higher values. If dynamical evolution is indeed at the origin of the observed trend, it seems plausible that globular clusters, now with mc ≃ 0.35M⊙, were born with a stellar mass function very similar to that measured today in the youngest Galactic clusters and with a value of mc around 0.15 M⊙. This is consistent with the absence of a turn-over in the mass function of the Galactic bulge down to the observational limit at ~0.2M⊙ and argues for the universality of the initial mass function of Population I and II stars.

The formation of the first stars out of metal-free gas appears to result in stars at least an order of magnitude more massive than in the present-day case. We here consider what controls the transition from a primordial to a modern initial mass function. We study the influence of low levels of metal enrichment and different initial conditions on the cooling and collapse of initially ionized gas in small protogalactic halos using three-dimensional, smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. We argue that fragmentation at moderate density depends on the initial conditions for star formation more than on the metal abundances present.

Violent relaxation, the protocluster dynamical response to the expulsion of its residual star-forming gas, is a short albeit crucial episode in the evolution of star clusters and star cluster systems. Because it is heavily driven by cluster-formation and environmental conditions, it is a potentially highly rewarding phase in terms of probing star formation and galaxy evolution. In this contribution, I review how cluster-formation and environmental conditions affect the shape of the young cluster mass function and the relation between the present star-formation rate of galaxies and the mass of their young, most massive cluster.

In the past few years gravitational lensing has allowed astrophysicists to make great progress in the understanding of the internal structure of early-type galaxies. By taking advantage of accurate photometric and spectroscopic measurements, the luminous and dark matter content of lens galaxies can in principle be disentangled (e.g., Grillo et al. 2008, 2009). SDSS J1538+5817 is an extraordinary strong lensing system composed of an elliptical galaxy and two equally-distant sources located, respectively, at redshifts 0.143 and 0.531 (Grillo et al., submitted to ApJ). The sources are lensed into two and four images with an almost complete Einstein ring, covering a rather large region on the lens plane. By using HST/ACS and WFPC2 imaging and NOT/ALFOSC spectroscopy, we have investigated the lens total mass distribution within one effective radius. Then, we have fitted the SDSS multicolor photometry of the galaxy with composite stellar population models to obtain its luminous mass. By combining lensing and photometric measurements, we have estimated the lens mass in terms of luminous and dark matter components and studied the global properties of the dark matter halo. The exceptional lensing configuration of this system has allowed us to conclude that the galaxy dark matter density distribution is shallower and more diffused than the luminous one and the former starts exceeding the latter at a distance of approximately 1.5 times the effective radius. Extending these results to a larger number of lenses would help us to decipher the processes that rule galaxy formation and evolution in the LCDM scenario.

Spectral evolution models are a widely used tool for determining the stellar content of galaxies. I provide a review of the latest developments in stellar atmosphere and evolution models, with an emphasis on massive stars. In contrast to the situation for low- and intermediate-mass stars, the current main challenge for spectral synthesis models are the uncertainties and rapid revision of current stellar evolution models. Spectral libraries, in particular those drawn from theoretical model atmospheres for hot stars, are relatively mature and can complement empirical templates for larger parameter space coverage. I introduce a new ultraviolet spectral library based on theoretical radiation-hydrodynamic atmospheres for hot massive stars. Application of this library to star-forming galaxies at high redshift, i.e., Lyman-break galaxies, will provide new insights into the abundances, initial mass function and ages of stars in the very early universe.

This note suggests nomenclature for dealing with the units of various astronomical quantities that are used with the relativistic time scales TT, TDB, TCB and TCG. It is suggested to avoid wordings like “TDB units” and “TT units” and avoid contrasting them to “SI units”. The quantities intended for use with TCG, TCB, TT or TDB should be called “TCG-compatible”, “TCB-compatible”, “TT-compatible” or “TDB-compatible”, respectively. The names of the units second and meter for numerical values of all these quantities should be used without any adjectives. This suggestion comes from a special discussion forum created within IAU Commission 52 “Relativity in Fundamental Astronomy”.

Solar-type variability is enhanced in short period close binaries with increased dynamo driven activity. This activity is studied in our analysis of recent light curves taken of the newly discovered eclipsing binaries GSC 2764 1417 (And), GSC 3355 0394 (Per) and GSC 2537 0775 (CVn).

Preliminary results of an investigation on the problem of hyperbolic comets are presented and discussed.

With the development of modern technologies such as integral field units, it is possible to obtain data cubes in which one produces images with spectral resolution. Extracting information from them can be quite complex, and hence the development of new methods of data analysis is desirable. We briefly describe a method of analysis of data cubes (data from single field observations, containing two spatial and one spectral dimension) that uses principal component analysis to express the data in the form of reduced dimensionality, facilitating efficient information extraction from very large data sets. We applied the method, for illustrative purposes, to the central region of the LINER galaxy NGC 4736, and demonstrate that it has a type 1 active nucleus, which was not known before. Furthermore, we show that it is displaced from the center of its stellar bulge.

The Pierre Auger Observatory, dedicated to the detection and study of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays, has as one of it fundamental missions outreach activities. With this in mind, a specially conceived Visitor Center was included in the design of the Pierre Auger campus in the city of Malargüe, Mendoza, Argentina. One of its main objectives is the contact with the community, through educational courses, talks, conferences and workshops for differen t levels. The permanent exchange between the Pierre Auger scientists and teachers, professionals and society, is important to the impact of the Observatory in the vision by the community of science in general, and scientists in particular. Activities in the outreach area during the last 10 years, resulted in changes to the curricula of study in the schools. Important topics are discussed, like astronomy, light pollution control, and modification of the behavior of the local society. In this presentation we will show how an extensive outreach program, organized by scientists in contact with the community and based on (or near) a research center, can be a factor of social transformation.

The cosmic abundance of the 3He isotope has important implications for many fields of astrophysics. We are using the 8.665 GHz hyperfine transition of 3He+ to determine the 3He/H abundance in Milky Way H ii regions and planetary nebulae. Here we review the 30 year history of our 3He program, report on its current status, and describe our future plans.
