The primordial lithium abundance inferred from WMAP and standard Big Bang nucleosysnthesis is approximately three times higher than the plateau value measured in old metal-poor Population II stars, suggesting that these stars have undergone atmospheric Li depletion. To constrain the physics responsible for such depletion, we conducted a homogeneous analysis of a large sample of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397, covering all evolutionary phases from below the main-sequence turnoff to high up the red-giant branch (RGB). The dwarf, turnoff, and early subgiant stars form a thin abundance plateau, with a sharpe edge in the middle of the subgiant branch, where Li dilution caused by the inward extension of the convective envelope starts (the beginning of the so-called first dredge up). A second steep abundance drop is seen at the RGB bump, again highlighting the need for the onset of nonstandard mixing in this evolutionary phase. Moreover, by also measuring the sodium abundances of the targets, we have gained insight into the degree of pollution by early cluster self-enrichement, and may separate highly polluted, Li-poor and Na-rich stars from stars formed from pristine material. Our observational findings strictly limit both the extent of lithium surface depletion, which in turn constrains the efficiency of mixing below the outer convection zone, and the resulting spread in lithium abundance in metal-poor turn-off stars.

Encounters with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology are carried out at the Universidad de Los Andes (Mérida, Venezuela) since 2000. The main purpose is that the minds of young people get familiarised with science and astronomy, through a well-established relationship linking universities and research centres with schools.

Globular clusters exhibit peculiar chemical patterns where Fe and heavy elements are constant inside a given cluster while light elements (Li to Al) show strong star-to-star variations. This pattern can be explained by self-pollution of the intracluster gas by the slow winds of fast rotating massive stars. Besides, several main sequences have been observed in several globular clusters which can be understood only with different stellar populations with distinct He content. Here we explore how these He abundances can constrain the self-enrichment in globular clusters.

The LISA mission is an interferometer, formed by three spacecraft, that aims at the detection of gravitational waves in the [10−4, 10−1] Hz frequency band. Present LISA TDI simulators, aimed at validating the novel Time Delay Interferometry method, use a classical Keplerian orbit model at first order in eccentricity in the gravitational field of a spherical non-rotating Sun, without planets. We propose to use the same model but described in the framework of relativistic gravity, and we focus here on quantifying the differences between classical and relativistic orbits for the LISA spacecraft, under the same assumptions.

Real 3-D coronal magnetic field reconstruction is expected to be made based on the technologies of IR spectrometry and tomography, in which the data from other wavelengths can be used as critical reference. Our recent studies focused on this issue are briefly reviewed in this paper. Liu & Lin (2008) first evaluated the validity of potential field source surface model applied to one of five limb regions in the corona by comparing the theoretical polarization maps with SOLARC observations in the IR Fe XIII 10747 Å forbidden coronal emission line (CEL). The five limb coronal regions were then studied together in order to study the spatial relation between the bright EUV features on the solar disk and the inferred IR emission sources, which were obtained from the inversion of the SOLARC linear polarization (LP) measurements (Liu 2009). The inversion for each fiber data in the field of view was made by finding the best location where the difference between the synthesized and the observed polarizations reaches the minimum in the integration path along the line of sight. We found a close relationship between the inferred IR emission source locations and the EUV strong emission positions.

The orientation of nineteen 0.8< z < 2.3 radio-loud quasars was measured using two independent methods. First, Hα was observed in the near IR using ISAAC at the VLT. The complex Hα emission lines were fitted with a range of models, some including emission from a flattened, extended accretion disk following Chen & Halpern (1989). The models were compared using the Bayesian evidence, and the disk axis angles recovered. Second, models were fitted to the ~10 MHz to 20 GHz radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to recover the jet angles, assuming that the emission is comprised of a broken power law arising from the radio lobes plus a Doppler-boosted core.

The cosmic microwave background and the cosmic expansion can be interpreted as evidence that the Universe underwent an extremely hot and dense phase about 14 Gyr ago. The nucleosynthesis computations tell us that the Universe emerged from this state with a very simple chemical composition: H, 2H, 3He, 4He, and traces of 7Li. All other nuclei where synthesised at later times. Our stellar evolution models tell us that, if a low-mass star with this composition had been created (a “zero-metal” star) at that time, it would still be shining on the Main Sequence today. Over the last 40 years there have been many efforts to detect such primordial stars but none has so-far been found. The lowest metallicity stars known have a metal content, Z, which is of the order of 10−4Z⊙. These are also the lowest metallicity objects known in the Universe. This seems to support the theories of star formation which predict that only high mass stars could form with a primordial composition and require a minimum metallicity to allow the formation of low-mass stars. Yet, since absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, we cannot exclude the existence of such low-mass zero-metal stars, at present. If we have not found the first Galactic stars, as a by product of our searches we have found their direct descendants, stars of extremely low metallicity (Z ≤ 10−3Z⊙). The chemical composition of such stars contains indirect information on the nature of the stars responsible for the nucleosynthesis of the metals. Such a fossil record allows us a glimpse of the Galaxy at a look-back time equivalent to redshift z = 10, or larger. The last ten years have been full of exciting discoveries in this field, which I will try to review in this contribution.

The M81 group is a highly interacting group consisting of a few large galaxies and about 40 dwarfs of both early- and late-type, thus making it an important nearby laboratory to study environmental effects and the role of interactions in the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies. We are studying the resolved stellar populations of the early-type dwarf galaxies in this group with available HST/ACS data. We will show results on the metallicity distribution functions and on the potential presence of population gradients for these dwarf galaxies.

The state of knowledge about the structure and composition of icy satellite interiors has been significantly extended by combining direct measurements from spacecraft, laboratory experiments, and theoretical modeling. Interior models of icy bodies will certainly benefit from future missions to the outer solar system, providing new and improved constraints on the surface chemistry, bulk composition and degree of internal differentiation, possible heterogeneities in radial mass distribution, the presence and extent of liquid reservoirs, and the amount of tidal heating for each target body. Here we summarize geophysical constraints on the interior structure and composition of selected Jovian and Saturnian icy satellites and investigate conditions under which potentially habitable liquid water reservoirs could be maintained. Future geophysical exploration which includes gravitational and magnetic field sounding from low-altitude orbit and close flyby, combined with altimetry data and in-situ monitoring of tidally-induced surface distortion and time-variable magnetic fields, would impose important constraints on the interiors of outer planet satellites.

Mass profile determinations for dispersion supported galaxies from line-of-sight velocities are subject to large uncertainties associated with the unknown stellar velocity anisotropy. We demonstrate both analytically and with available kinematic data (for systems spanning eight decades in luminosity) that the mass-anisotropy degeneracy is effectively eliminated at a characteristic radius that is close to the 3D deprojected half-light radius of the stars. This allows a simple, yet accurate formula to describe the half-light dark matter masses of all hot systems, including dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), based on directly observable parameters: M1/2 = 4σ2LOSRhalf/G, where Rhalf is the 2D projected half-light radius and σLOS is the luminosity-weighted square of the line-of-sight velocity dispersion. The fact that masses are well-constrained within a characteristic stellar radius has allowed our group to perform systematic, accurate mass determinations for Milky Way dSphs and to conclude that they all have a common mass scale of approximately 107 M⊙ within 300 pc of their centers. We extend this work to the satellite population of Andromeda using Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of individual stars. We find that the Andromeda dSphs are also consistent with sharing a common mass, but that it is offset from the scale of the Milky Way dSphs by a factor of ~2.

We explore the general characteristics of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars in the Galaxy using the Stellar Abundances for Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) database (Suda et al. 2008, PASJ, 60, 1159). The overall trend of EMP stars suggests that there are at least two types of extra mixing to change the surface abundances of EMP stars. One is to deplete lithium abundance during the early phase of giant branch and another is to decrease C/N ratio by one order of magnitude during the red giant branch or AGB phase. On the other hand, these mixing processes are different from those suggested in the Galactic globular clusters because of the different relations between O, Na, Mg, and Al abundances.

The general relativistic definition of astrometric measurement needs an appropriate use of the concept of reference frame, which should then be linked to the conventions of the IAU Resolutions (Soffel et al., 2003), which fix the celestial coordinate system. A consistent definition of the astrometric observables in the context of General Relativity is also essential to find uniquely the stellar coordinates and proper motion, this being the main physical task of the inverse ray tracing problem. Aim of this work is to set the level of reciprocal consistency of two relativistic models, GREM and RAMOD (Gaia, ESA mission), in order to guarantee a physically correct definition of light direction to a star, an essential item for deducing the star coordinates and proper motion within the same level of measurement accuracy.

We review the properties of globular clusters (GCs) which make them useful for studying the Galactic halo, Galactic chemical evolution and the early stages of the formation of the Milky Way. We review the evidence that GCs have a chemical inventory similar to those of halo field stars. We discuss the abundance ratios for dSph galaxies and show that it is possible to have formed at least part of the Galactic-halo field stellar population by dissolving GCs and/or accreting dSph galaxies, but only if this occurred at an early stage in the formation of the Galaxy. We review the constraints on halo-formation timescales deduced from the low magnesium isotopic ratios in metal-poor halo field dwarfs, which indicate that asymptotic giant-branch (AGB) stars did not have time to contribute significantly, while M71 contains two populations, one without and also one with a substantial AGB contribution. We review the limited evidence for GCs with a second population showing additional contributions from Type II supernovae, currently confined to ω Cen, M54 and M22, all of which may have been the nuclei or central regions of accreted galaxies. We check our own data for additional similar GCs and find preliminary indications that NGC 2419, a massive GC far in the outer Galactic halo, may also belong to this group.

Early-type galaxies do not come in any shape, form, and color. Many of their observable properties obey tight correlations, also known as empirical scaling relations. The correlations are non-trivial, in the sense that they cannot be explained by simple physical or dimensional arguments. A subset of the empirical scaling relations connects baryonic observables with quantities that depend on the total gravitational potential of the galaxies, and thus on their dark matter content. These correlations are a fundamental testbed for our understanding of the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies, and, more in general, of the physical processes that determine the interplay between baryons and dark matter at galactic scales.

“The Sky as a Laboratory” is an educational project of the Department of Astronomy of the University of Padova aimed to give students a physical approach to astronomy and astrophysics. It is a regional program designed to improve science education in the last two grades of high school, by creating cooperation between scientists and teachers. Currently it is present in 30 high schools around all provinces of the region of Veneto in the North-East of Italy. The close involvement in the didactical activities of high schools teachers is without any doubt the winning strategy of the project. Their enthusiastic participation to teaching and organising activities attracts each year the attention for sciences of an increasing number of students and suggests new ideas for future educational activities.

Following the first observational study of the interaction between two distinct filaments (Su et al. 2007; hereafter, event 1), we present another interesting case observed by SMART telescope on 2005 June 25 with higher spatial resolution (hereafter, event 2). The two events are compared with each other. In event 1 the two filaments erupted subsequently and obvious mass flow was observed to be transferred from one erupting filament to one stable filament which triggered its eruption. On the contrary, in event 2, the two filaments erupted simultaneously and there was no transfer of material noticed between them during the initial stage. The two filaments merged together along the ejection path, indicating the bodily coalesce between the two interacting flux ropes. Moreover, event 1 was associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME), while event 2 was a failed filament eruption, thus without CME association.

We show that the peculiar surface abundance patterns of Carbon Enhanced Metal Poor (CEMP) stars has been inherited from material having been processed by H- and He-burning phases in a previous generation of stars (hereafter called the “Source Stars”). In this previous generation, some mixing must have occurred between the He- and the H-burning regions in order to explain the high observed abundances of nitrogen. In addition, it is necessary to postulate that a very small fraction of the carbon-oxygen core has been expelled (either by winds or by the supernova explosion). Therefore only the outermost layers should have been released by the Source Stars. Some of the CEMP stars may be He-rich if the matter from the Source Star is not too much diluted with the InterStellar Medium (ISM). Those stars formed from nearly pure ejecta would also be Li-poor.

We present a strong correlation between 12μm mid-IR and intrinsic X-ray (2–10 keV) luminosities of local Seyferts. This work is based on new diffraction-limited mid-IR observations with the 8-m Very Large Telescope (VLT), resulting in the least-contaminated core fluxes of 42 Seyferts to date.

Detailed evolutionary calculations spanning 4.6 × 109 yr are presented for (a) a model representing main-belt comet 133P/Elst-Pizarro, considering different initial mixtures of ices and dust, and (b) a Kuiper Belt object heated by radioactive decay, growing in size from an initial radius of 10 km to a final 250 km.

It is shown that for the main-belt comet only crystalline H2O ice may survive in the interior of the nucleus, and may be found at depths ranging from ~50 to 150 m. Other volatiles will be completely lost. For the large Kuiper Belt object, evaporation and flow of water and vapor gradually remove the water from the core and the final (present) structure is differentiated, with a rocky, highly porous core of 80 km radius. Outside the core, due to refreezing of water vapor, a compact, ice-rich layer forms, a few tens of km thick. The amorphous ice is preserved in an outer layer about 20 km thick.

Within the Local Universe galaxies can be studied in great detail star by star. The Color-Magnitude Diagram synthesis analysis method is well established as the most accurate way to determine the detailed star formation history of galaxies going back to the earliest times. This approach received a significant boost from the exceptional data sets that wide field CCD imagers on the ground and the Hubble Space Telescope could provide. Spectroscopic studies using large ground based telescopes such as VLT, Magellan, Keck and HET have allowed the determination of abundances and kinematics for significant samples of stars in nearby dwarf galaxies. These studies have shown directly how properties can vary spatially and temporally, which gives important constraints to theories of galaxy formation and evolution.
