Probably the only reliably recorded solar eclipse event during a day-time war is the 28 May 585 BCE event, famous also for several other reasons. It has a credible written record, mentioned by the ancient historian Heredotus and his History notes that the eclipse was predicted by Thales of Miletos (the Ionian capital city in Western Anatolia). The location of the war between Lydians and the Medes is now firmly located as the plain in front of ancient city of Pteria, the Anatolian capital of the Medes. The historical record mentions that the war stopped and a peace treaty was signed, with the wedding of a prince and a princess from rival kings. All these features make the event and place an excellent candidate for a World Astronomical Heritage site to be preserved.

Using a population number synthesis code, the theoretical time distributions of type Ia supernovae in starburst galaxies are calculated, using competing models for the formation of such events: the single degenerate (a white dwarf accreting matter from a late main sequence or red giant companion) and double degenerate (the merger of two white dwarfs) scenario. The code includes the latest results in determining the progenitors for both models. Examples are the mass stripping effect in the case of the single degenerate scenario and the differentiation between the α- (based on the balance of energy) and γ- (based on the balance of angular momentum) description of energy conversion during common envelope evolution of binaries. The shape and extent of the obtained delay time distributions critically depends on which formation scenario is used. Comparing these results to the latest observed distributions allows to draw conclusions about the constraints put on the theoretical models by these observations. We also specifically investigate the influence of the degree of conservatism during Roche lobe overflow on the delay time distribution. We conclude that the single degenerate scenario alone cannot reproduce the observed delay time distributions, and that most double degenerate type Ia supernovae are formed through a quasi-conservative Roche lobe overflow phase followed by spiral-in, as opposed to a double common envelope evolution.

The measurements of the solar photospheric diameter rank among the most difficult astronomic observations. Reasons for this are the fuzzy definition of the limb, the SNR excess, and the adverse daytime seeing condition. As a consequence there are very few lengthy and consistent time series of such measurements. Using modern techniques, just the series from the IAG/USP and from Calern/OCA span more than one solar cycle. The Rio de Janeiro Group observations started in 1997, and therefore in 2008 one complete solar cycle time span can be analyzed. The series shares common principles of observation and analysis with the ones afore mentioned, and it is complementary on time to them. The distinctive features are the larger number of individual points and the improved precision. The series contains about 25,000 single observations, evenly distributed on a day-by-day basis. The typical error of a single observation is half an arc-second, enabling us to investigate variations at the expected level of tens of arc-second on a weekly basis. These features prompted to develop a new methodology for the investigation of the heliophysical scenarios leading to the observed variations, both on time and on heliolatitude. The algorithms rely on running averages and time shifts to derive the correlation and statistical incertitude for the comparison of the long term and major episodes variations of the solar diameter against activity markers. The results bring support to the correlation between the diameter variation and the solar activity, but evidentiating two different regimens for the long term trend and the major solar events.

Historically, low luminosity stars have attracted very little attention, in part because they are difficult to see except with large telescopes, however, by neglecting to study them we are leaving out the vast majority of stars in the Universe. Low mass stars evolve very slowly, it takes them trillions of years to burn their hydrogen, after which, they just turn into a He white dwarf, without ever going through the red giant phase. This lack of observable evolution partly explains the lack of interest in them. The search for the “missing mass” in the galactic plane turned things around and during the 60s and 70s the search for large M/L objects placed M-dwarfs and cool WDs among objects of astrophysical interest. New fields of astronomical research, like BDs and exoplanets appeared as spin-offs from efforts to find the “missing mass”. The search for halo white dwarfs, believed to be responsible for the observed microlensing events, is pursued by several groups. The progress in these last few years has been tremendous, here I present highlights some of the great successes in the field and point to some of the still unsolved issues.

The similarities between linearized gravity and electromagnetism are known since the early days of General Relativity. Using an exact approach based on tidal tensors, we show that such analogy holds only on very special conditions and depends crucially on the reference frame. This places restrictions on the validity of the “gravito-electromagnetic” equations commonly found in literature.

We study effects of relic long-lived strongly interacting massive particles (X particles) on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The X particle is assumed to have existed during the BBN epoch, but decayed long before detected. The interaction strength between an X and a nucleon is assumed to be similar to that between nucleons. Rates of nuclear reactions and beta decay of X-nuclei are calculated, and the BBN in the presence of neutral charged X0 particles is calculated taking account of captures of X0 by nuclei. As a result, the X0 particles form bound states with normal nuclei during a relatively early epoch of BBN leading to the production of heavy elements. Constraints on the abundance of X0 are derived from observations of primordial light element abundances. Particle models which predict long-lived colored particles with lifetimes longer than ~200 s are rejected. This scenario prefers the production of 9Be and 10B. There might, therefore, remain a signature of the X particle on primordial abundances of those elements. Possible signatures left on light element abundances expected in four different models are summarized.

The Tarantula Survey is an ambitious ESO Large Programme that has obtained multi-epoch spectroscopy of over 1000 massive stars in the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Here, we introduce the scientific motivations of the survey and give an overview of the observational sample. Ultimately, quantitative analysis of every star, paying particular attention to the effects of rotational mixing and binarity, will be used to address fundamental questions in both stellar and cluster evolution.

The mean angular momentum associated with the collision of two celestial objects moving in almost circular heliocentric orbits was studied. The results of these studies were used to develop models of the formation of binaries at the stage of rarefied preplanetesimals. The models can explain a greater fraction of binaries formed at greater distances from the Sun. Sometimes there could be two centers of contraction inside the rotating preplanetesimal formed as the result of a collision between two rarefied preplanetesimals. Such formation of binaries could result in binaries with almost the same masses of components separated by a large distance. Formation of a disk around the primary could result because the angular momentum that was obtained by a rarefied preplanetesimal formed by collision was greater than the critical angular momentum for a solid body. One or several satellites of the primary could be formed from the disk.

We present the initial results of the AKARI mission program QSONG (Quasar Spectroscopic Observation with NIR Grism). QSONG utilizes the unique AKARI capability of performing spectroscopic observations at 2.5–5 μm, with the aim of understanding the mass evolution of ~200 quasars at 3.4 < z < 6.5 from their rest-frame optical spectra. The program also studies the rest-frame NIR spectra of 99 well-studied quasars at low redshift (z < 0.5) and 10 red quasars. With the high-redshift QSONG observations, we detect and resolve redshifted optical lines such as Hα for the first time at this redshift, allowing us to measure the supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses at high redshift using the well-calibrated optical mass estimators and provide an independent assessment of UV line-based mass measurements whose reliability has been controversial. Until the launch of JWST, AKARI will be the only facility in the world capable of studying the rest-frame optical spectra of high-redshift objects out to z ~ 6. Our initial QSONG result indicates a lack of very massive SMBHs at z > 5.5, suggesting that we are possibly witnessing the cosmic growth history of the most massive SMBHs (~ 1010M⊙) in the early universe. Ultimately, an extensive study of the rest-frame optical spectra of high-redshift QSOs will help us understand the evolution and the growth of SMBHs in the early universe.

We review the properties of supernovae (SNe) as a function of the progenitor's mass M. (1) Mup - 10 M⊙ stars are super-AGB stars and resultant electron capture SNe may be Faint supernovae like Type IIn SN 2008S. (2) 10 - 12 M⊙ stars undergo Fe-core collapse to form neutron stars (NSs) and Faint supernovae. (3) 12 M⊙ - MBN stars undergo Fe-core collapse to form NSs and normal core-collapse supernovae. (4) MBN - 90 M⊙ stars undergo Fe-core collapse to form Black Holes. Resultant supernovae are bifurcate into Hypernovae and Faint supernovae. The observed properties of SN 2008ha can be explained with this type of Faint supernovae. (5) 90 - 140 M⊙ stars produce Luminous SNe, like SNe 2007bi and 2006gy. (6) 140 - 300 M⊙ stars become pair-instability supernovae which could be Luminous supernovae (SNe 2007bi and 2006gy). (7) Very massive stars with M ≳ 300 M⊙ undergo core-collapse to form intermediate mass black holes. Some SNe could be more Luminous supernovae (like SN 2006gy).

Ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (LIR > 1012L⊙) are locally rare, but appear to dominate the co-moving energy density at higher redshifts (z > 2). Many of these are optically faint, dust-obscured galaxies that have been identified by the detection of their thermal dust emission in the sub-mm. Multi-wavelength spectroscopic follow-up observations of these sub-mm galaxies (SMGs) have shown that they are massive (Mstellar ~ 1011M⊙) objects undergoing intense star-formation (SFRs ~ 102–103M⊙ yr−1) with a mean redshift of z ~ 2, coinciding with the epoch of peak quasar activity. Furthermore, the presence of AGNs in ~ 28–50% of SMGs has been unveiled in the X-ray and near-IR. When both AGN and star-formation activity are present, long-slit spectroscopic techniques face difficulties in disentangling their independent contributions from integrated spectra. We have observed Hα emission from a sample of three SMGs in the redshift range z ~ 1.4–2.4 with the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS on Keck, in conjunction with Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics. The spatially resolved, two-dimensional spectroscopic insight that these observations provide is the only viable probe of the spatial distribution and line-of-sight motion of ionized gas within these galaxies. We detect multiple galactic-scale sub-components, distinguishing the compact, broad Hα emission arising from an AGN from the more extended narrow-line emission of star-forming regions spreading over ~ 8–17 kpc. We explore the dynamics of gas in the inner galaxy halo to improve our understanding of the internal dynamics of this enigmatic galaxy population. We find no evidence of ordered orbital motion such as would be found in a gaseous disk, but rather large velocity offsets of a few hundred kilometers per second between distinct galactic-scale sub-components. Considering the disturbed morphology of SMGs, these sub-components are likely remnants of originally independent gas-rich galaxies that are in the process of merging, hence triggering the ultraluminous SMG phase.

Being close to the cities of Puebla to east and Cholula to the north, both having potential for large growth, the National Astronomical Observatory in Tonantzintla (OAN-Tonantzintla) faces the danger of deteriorating its sky conditions even more. In order to maintain competitiveness for education and scientific programs, it is important to preserve the sky brightness conditions. through: 1) our awareness of the night sky characteristics in continuous monitoring campaigns, doing more measurements over the next years to monitor changes and 2) encouraging local authorities about the need to regulate public lighting at the same time, showing them the benefits of such initiatives when well planed and correctly implemented.

We investigate nucleosynthesis and element formation in the early universe in the framework of higher dimensional cosmology. We find that temperature decays less rapidly in higher dimensional cosmology, which we believe may have nontrivial consequences vis-a-vis primordial physics.

Probabilities of collisions of migrating small bodies and dust particles produced by these bodies with planets were studied. Various Jupiter-family comets, Halley-type comets, long-period comets, trans-Neptunian objects, and asteroids were considered. The total probability of collisions of any considered body or particle with all planets did not exceed 0.2. The amount of water delivered from outside of Jupiter's orbit to the Earth during the formation of the giant planets could exceed the amount of water in Earth's oceans. The ratio of the mass of water delivered to a planet by Jupiter-family comets or Halley-type comets to the mass of the planet can be greater for Mars, Venus, and Mercury, than that for Earth.

We summarize the motivations and main conclusions of the joint discussion “Dark Matter in Early-type Galaxies”.

Young, massive stars influence their ambient medium through winds and radiation. The outcome of this feedback depends on the number of massive stars in a star cluster and on the density of the ambient medium. This contribution is based on a comparison of observations to the results of numerical simulations. We discuss the gravitational fragmentation of feedback-driven shells expanding from young stellar clusters. The thin-shell approximation is compared to 3D hydrodynamical simulations with smoothed-particle hydrodynamics and adaptive-mesh refinement codes. We explore the influence of external pressure and propose a thick-shell dispersion relation, where the pressure of the external medium is included. The mass spectrum of the shell fragments is constructed and we speculate about the origin of the deficit of low-mass objects.

Many solar like stars were observed by CoRoT and MOST missions. We try to investigate some of these stars using asteroseismic inversion method using both frequencies fitting and separation fitting. Our results are compared with semiempirical method based on direct power spectrum analysis.

The first stars are key to the formation of primeval galaxies, early cosmological reionization, and the assembly of supermassive black holes. Although Population III stars lie beyond the reach of direct observation, their chemical imprint on long-lived second generation stars may yield indirect measures of their masses. While numerical models of primordial SN nucleosynthetic yields have steadily improved in recent years, they have not accounted for the chemical abundances of ancient metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo. We present new two-dimensional models of 15 - 40 M⊙ primordial SNe that capture the effect of progenitor rotation, mass, metallicity, and explosion energy on elemental yields. Rotation dramatically alter the structure of zero-metallicity stars, expanding them to much larger radii. This promotes mixing between elemental shells by the SN shock and fallback onto the central remnant, both of which govern which elements escape the star. We find that a Salpeter IMF average of our yields for Z=0 models with explosion energies of 2.4 × 1051 ergs or less is in good agreement with the abundances measured in extremely metal-poor stars. Because these stars were likely enriched by early SNe from a well-defined IMF, our models indicate that the bulk of the metals in the early universe were synthesized by low-mass primordial stars.

In spite of its relevance, the Thermally Pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) phase is one of the most uncertain phases of stellar evolution, and a major source of disagreement between the results of different population synthesis models of galaxies. I will briefly review the existing literature on the subject, and recall the basic prescriptions that have been used to fix the contribution of TP-AGB stars to the integrated light of stellar populations. The simplicity of these prescriptions greatly contrasts with the richness of details provided by present-day databases of AGB stars in the Magellanic Clouds, which are now being extended to other nearby galaxies. I will present the first results of an ongoing study aimed at simulating photometry, chemistry, pulsation, mass loss, dust properties of AGB star populations in resolved and un-resolved galaxies. We test our predictions against observations from various surveys of the Magellanic Clouds (DENIS, 2MASS, OGLE, MACHO, Spitzer, and AKARI). I will discuss the implications and outline the plan of future developments.

We construct a set of reference frames for description of the orbital and rotational motion of the Moon. We use a scalar-tensor theory of gravity depending on two parameters of the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism and utilize the concepts of the relativistic resolutions on reference frames adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 2000. We assume that the solar system is isolated and space-time is asymptotically flat. The primary reference frame has the origin at the solar-system barycenter (SSB) and spatial axes are going to infinity. The SSB frame is not rotating with respect to distant quasars. The secondary reference frame has the origin at the Earth-Moon barycenter (EMB). The EMB frame is local with its spatial axes spreading out to the orbits of Venus and Mars and not rotating dynamically in the sense that both the Coriolis and centripetal forces acting on a free-falling test particle, moving with respect to the EMB frame, are excluded. Two other local frames, the geocentric (GRF) and the selenocentric (SRF) frames, have the origin at the center of mass of the Earth and Moon respectively. They are both introduced in order to connect the coordinate description of the lunar motion, observer on the Earth, and a retro-reflector on the Moon to the observable quantities which are the proper time and the laser-ranging distance. We solve the gravity field equations and find the metric tensor and the scalar field in all frames. We also derive the post-Newtonian coordinate transformations between the frames and analyze the residual gauge freedom of the solutions of the field equations. We discuss the gravitomagnetic effects in the barycentric equations of the motion of the Moon and argue that they are beyond the current accuracy of lunar laser ranging (LLR) observations.
