In our earlier study of a revisit of the classic Wilson Effect, it was found that a large proportion of sunspots do not display the geometric effect which is ascribed to a depression of the umbra. It was shown that the presence or absence of the effect, observed close to the limb, depends upon the ambient magnetic configuration of the sunspot. In this follow up study, we look for the impact of changes in ambient magnetic configuration on the measurable properties of sunspots during their disk passage, using observations obtained at the Kodaikanal observatory during 1978-80. Digitized photoheliogram data were used to examine and measure areas of spots and their umbrae for 101 cases. Magnetic field measures published by the Academy of sciences, Leningrad were used to evaluate the ambient magnetic configuration. The results indicate that the extent of magnetic bipolarity is associated with changes in the proportion of the area of the penumbra to that of the umbra. In regular spots, the relative area of penumbra reduces with reduction in the strength of ambient opposite polarity spots and pores. However, in the presence of pore sized blob(s) in penumbra, and with associated emerging fluxes, the penumbra is significantly enlarged. But in the presence of a light bridge or a split umbra, the relative area of penumbra is considerably reduced.

A detailed investigation of momentum transfer in radiatively driven stellar winds shows that for the thin wind case ion decoupling may occur. The decoupling of absorbing ions significantly affects dynamics of the wind. We analysed such effects using our hydrodynamic code and predicted spectral changes with the help of the SHELLSPEC code.

Using a new formulation to compute structures of stationary and axisymmetric magnetized barotropic stars in Newtonian gravity, we have succeeded in obtaining numerically exact models of stars with extremely high interior magnetic fields. In this formulation, there appear four arbitrary functions of the magnetic flux function from the integrability conditions among the basic equations. Since in our new formulation these arbitrary functions appear in the expression of the current density, configurations with different current distributions can be specified by choosing the forms of the arbitrary functions.

By choosing appropriate forms for the four arbitrary functions, we have solved many kinds of equilibrium configurations both with poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields. Among them, by choosing special form for the toroidal current density, we have been able to obtain magnetized stars which have extremely strong poloidal magnetic fields deep inside the core region near the symmetric axis. By adopting the appropriate model parameters for the neutron stars, the magnetic fields could be 1014 ~ 1015 G on the surfaces and be about 1017 G in the deep interior regions. For other model parameters appropriate for white dwarfs, the magnetic fields could be around 107 ~ 108 G (surface regions) and 109 ~ 1010 G (core regions). It is remarkable that the regions with very strong interior magnetic fields are confined to a very narrow region around the symmetric axis in the central part of the stars. The issues of stability of these configurations and of evolutionary paths to reach such configurations need to be investigated in the future work.

Only 5 Of?p stars have been identified in the Galaxy. Of these, 3 have been studied in detail, and within the past 5 years magnetic fields have been detected in each of them. The observed magnetic and spectral characteristics are indicative of organised magnetic fields, likely of fossil origin, confining their supersonic stellar winds into dense, structured magnetospheres. The systematic detection of magnetic fields in these stars strongly suggests that the Of?p stars represent a general class of magnetic O-type stars.

The mass assembly of galaxies leaves various imprints on their surroundings, such as shells, streams and tidal tails. The frequency and properties of these fine structures depend on the mechanism driving the mass assembly: e.g. a monolithic collapse, rapid cold-gas accretion followed by violent disk instabilities, minor mergers or major dry/wet mergers. Therefore, by studying the outskirts of galaxies, one can learn about their main formation mechanism. I present here our on-going work to characterize the outskirts of Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs), which are powerful probes at low redshift of the hierarchical mass assembly of galaxies. This work relies on ultra–deep optical images obtained at CFHT with the wide-field of view MegaCam camera of field and cluster ETGs obtained as part of the ATLAS3D and NGVS projects. State of the art numerical simulations are used to interpret the data. The images reveal a wealth of unknown faint structures at levels as faint as 29 mag arcsec−2 in the g-band. Initial results for two galaxies are presented here.

The young star clusters we observe today are the building blocks of a new generation of stars and planets in our Galaxy and beyond. Despite their fundamental role we still lack knowledge about the initial conditions under which star clusters form and the impact of these often harsh environments on the formation and evolution of their stellar and substellar members.

We present recent results showing that mass segregation in realistic models of young star clusters occurs very quickly for subvirial spherical systems without substructure. This finding is a critical step to resolve the controversial debate on mass segregation in young star clusters and provides strong constraints on their initial conditions. The rapid concentration of massive stars is usually associated with strong gravitational interactions early on during cluster evolution and the subsequent formation of multiple systems and ejection of stars.

This work presents a new physical model of the star formation rate (SFR), tested with a large set of numerical simulations of driven, supersonic, self-gravitating, magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, where collapsing cores are captured with accreting sink particles. The model depends on the relative importance of gravitational, turbulent, magnetic, and thermal energies, expressed through the virial parameter, αvir, the rms sonic Mach number, S,0, and the ratio of mean gas pressure to mean magnetic pressure, β0. The SFR is predicted to decrease with increasing αvir (stronger turbulence relative to gravity), and to depend weakly on S,0 and β0, for values typical of star forming regions (S,0≈4-20 and β0≈1-20). The star-formation simulations used to test the model result in an approximately constant SFR, after an initial transient phase. Both the value of the SFR and its dependence on the virial parameter found in the simulations agree very well with the theoretical predictions.

We use 3D radiative MHD simulations of the upper turbulent convection layer for investigation of physical mechanisms of formation of magnetic structures on the Sun. The simulations include all essential physical processes, and are based of the LES (Large-Eddy Simulations) approach for describing the sub-grid scale turbulence. The simulation domain covers the top layer of the convection zone and the lower atmosphere. The results reveal a process of spontaneous formation of stable magnetic structures from an initially weak vertical magnetic field, uniformly distributed in the simulation domain. The process starts concentration of magnetic patches at the boundaries of granular cells, which are subsequently merged together into a stable large-scale structure by converging downdrafts below the surface. The resulting structure represents a compact concentration of strong magnetic field, reaching 6 kG in the interior. It has a cluster-like internal structurization, and is maintained by strong downdrafts extending into the deep layers.

A characteristic feature of fluid theories concerns the difficulty of uniquely defining consistent closure conditions for the fluid equations. In fact it is well known that fluid theories cannot generally provide a closed system of equations for the fluid fields. This feature is typical of collisionless plasmas where, in contrast to collisional plasmas, asymptotic closure conditions do not follow as a consequence of an H-theorem This issue is of particular relevance in astrophysics where fluid approaches are usually adopted. On the other hand, it is well known that the determination of the closure conditions is in principle achievable in the context of kinetic theory. In the case of multi-species thermal magnetoplasmas this requires the determination of the species tensor pressure and of the corresponding heat fluxes. In this paper we investigate this problem in the framework of the Vlasov-Maxwell description for collisionless axisymmetric magnetoplasmas arising in astrophysics, with particular reference to accretion discs around compact objects (like black holes and neutron stars). The dynamics of collisionless plasmas in these environments is determined by the simultaneous presence of gravitational and magnetic fields, where the latter may be both externally produced and self-generated by the plasma currents. Our starting point here is the construction of a solution for the stationary distribution function describing slowly-varying gyrokinetic equilibria. The treatment is applicable to non-relativistic axisymmetric systems characterized by temperature anisotropy and differential rotation flows. It is shown that the kinetic formalism allows one to solve the closure problem and to consistently compute the relevant fluid fields with the inclusion of finite Larmor-radius effects. The main features of the theory and relevant applications are discussed.

This paper is an abridged version of the report produced by the Blue Dots initiative, whose activities include the elaboration of a roadmap towards the spectroscopic characterization of habitable exoplanets. The full version of the Blue Dots report can be downloaded at http://www.blue-dots.net/spip.php?article105. While the roadmap will need to be updated regularly, it is expected that the methodology developed within Blue Dots will provide a durable framework for the elaboration of future revisions.

Microquasars are X-ray binaries that show extended radio jets. These jets can accelerate particles up to relativistic energies that produce non-thermal emission from radio to TeV, and could also make a non-negligible contribution to the galactic CRs in some energy ranges. The orbital motion and compactness of these sources allow the study of high-energy astrophysical phenomena in extreme conditions that change in accessible timescales. In this work, I briefly discuss the production of broadband non-thermal emission in microquasars, putting special emphasis on the high- and the very high-energy bands.

We report the results of our search for magnetic fields in a representative sample of classical Be stars carried out during 2006-2008 using low-resolution spectropolarimetry with FORS1 at the VLT. Among the 28 classical Be stars studied, detections of a magnetic field were achieved in seven stars (i.e. ~25%). The detected magnetic fields are rather weak, not stronger than ~150G. Among the Be stars studied with time series, one Be star, λ Eri, displays cyclic variability of the magnetic field with a period of 21.12 min.

The Exoplanet Roadmap Advisory Team (EPR-AT) was formed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to advise it on the best path for characterizing exoplanets including terrestrial planets. The EPR-AT delivered its report to ESA in August 2010. Here we summarize the findings of this task force.

Relationships between the X-ray and radio behavior of black hole X-ray binaries during outbursts have established a fundamental coupling between the accretion disks and radio jets in these systems. I begin by reviewing the prevailing paradigm for this disk-jet coupling, also highlighting what we know about similarities and differences with neutron star and white dwarf binaries. Until recently, this paradigm had not been directly tested with dedicated high-angular resolution radio imaging over entire outbursts. Moreover, such high-resolution monitoring campaigns had not previously targetted outbursts in which the compact object was either a neutron star or a white dwarf. To address this issue, we have embarked on the Jet Acceleration and Collimation Probe Of Transient X-Ray Binaries (JACPOT XRB) project, which aims to use high angular resolution observations to compare disk-jet coupling across the stellar mass scale, with the goal of probing the importance of the depth of the gravitational potential well, the stellar surface and the stellar magnetic field, on jet formation. Our team has recently concluded its first monitoring series, including (E)VLA, VLBA, X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations of entire outbursts of the black hole candidate H 1743-322, the neutron star system Aquila X-1, and the white dwarf system SS Cyg. Here I present preliminary results from this work, largely confirming the current paradigm, but highlighting some intriguing new behavior, and suggesting a possible difference in the jet formation process between neutron star and black hole systems.

We study the complexity of supergranular cells using the intensity patterns obtained at the Kodaikanal solar observatory during the solar maximum. Our data consists of visually identified supergranular cells, from which a fractal dimension D is obtained according to the relation P ∝ AD/2 where A is the area and P is the perimeter of the cells. We find a difference in the fractal dimension between the active and the quiet region cells which is conjectured to be due to the magnetic activity level.

We study kinetics of plasma particles on internal inhomogeneities and on the boundary of astrophysical jets in the presence of intensive low-frequency electromagnetic (surface and bulk waves). These waves with energy density exceeding or of the same order as the particle kinetic energy density can be generated due to the non-equilibrium state of plasma and lead to the jet stratification at various scales. The main reason is a ponderomotive force which is able to change dramatically the particle behavior, the plasma density cross-section profile and the wave collimation. We present results obtained on the basis of our simple ponderomotive model of the self-consistent analysis of the electromagnetic wave propagation and the formation of the plasma density profile.

Commission 5 and its working groups have continued to operate at a high level of activity over the last three years. In an era when the volume of astronomical data generated by next-generation instruments continues to increase dramatically, and data centres and data tools become increasingly central to front-line astronomical research, the activities of Commission 5 are becoming even more significant. However, most of the activities of Commission 5 take place through its working groups. That was reflected in the meetings at the IAU GA, where there was only one short Business Meeting of the Commission as a whole, but several vigorous meetings of the working groups.

We present simulations of supersonic collisions between molecular clouds of mass 500 M⊙ and radius 2.24 pc. The simulations are performed with the SEREN SPH code. The code treats the energy equation and the associated transport of heating and cooling radiation. The formation of protostars is captured by introducing sink particles. Low velocity collisions form a shock-compressed layer which fragments to form stars. For high-velocity collisions, υrel ⪆ 5 km s−1, the non-linear thin shell instability strongly disrupts the shock-compressed layer, and may inhibit the formation of stars.

Sunspot regions often form complexes of activity that may live for several solar rotations, and represent a major component of the Sun's magnetic activity. It had been suggested that the close appearance of active regions in space and time might be related to common subsurface roots, or “nests” of activity. EUV images show that the active regions are magnetically connected in the corona, but subsurface connections have not been established. We investigate the subsurface structure and dynamics of a large complex of activity, NOAA 10987-10989, observed during the SOHO/MDI Dynamics run in March-April 2008, which was a part of the Whole Heliospheric Interval (WHI) campaign. The active regions in this complex appeared in a narrow latitudinal range, probably representing a subsurface toroidal flux tube. We use the MDI full-disk Dopplergrams to measure perturbations of travel times of acoustic waves traveling to various depths by using time-distance helioseismology, and obtain sound-speed and flow maps by inversion of the travel times. The subsurface flow maps show an interesting dynamics of decaying active regions with persistent shearing flows, which may be important for driving the flaring and CME activity, observed during the WHI campaign. Our analyses, including the seismic sound-speed inversion results and the distribution of deep-focus travel-time anomalies, gave indications of diverging roots of the magnetic structures, as could be expected from Ω-loop structures. However, no clear connection in the depth range of 0-48 Mm among the three active regions in this complex of activity was detected.
