Recent observations have shown that in many exoplanetary systems the spin axis of the parent star is misaligned with the planet's orbital axis. These have been used to argue against the scenario that short-period planets migrated to their present-day locations due to tidal interactions with their natal discs. However, this interpretation is based on the assumption that the spins of young stars are parallel to the rotation axes of protostellar discs around them. We show that the interaction between a magnetic star and its circumstellar disc can (although not always) have the effect of pushing the stellar spin axis away from the disc angular momentum axis toward the perpendicular state and even the retrograde state. Planets formed in the disc may therefore have their orbital axes misaligned with the stellar spin axis, even before any additional planet-planet scatterings or Kozai interactions take place. In general, magnetosphere–disc interactions lead to a broad distribution of the spin–orbit angles, with some systems aligned and other systems misaligned.

The particle dynamics and in the stellar magnetosphere during gravitational collapse is investigated. The formations of relativistic jets and the generation of the radiation bursts in the stellar magnetosphere by gravitational collapse are considered. As follows from results, the stars on the stage of gravitational collapse must be powerful sources of the relativistic jets and the non-thermal radiation. These jets will formed in the polar caps of collapsing stars magnetospheres, when the stellar magnetic field increases during collapse and the charged particles will be accelerate. These jets will generate the non-thermal radiation. The radiation flux grows with decreasing stellar radius and can be observed in the form of radiation burst in wide band wave- from radio to gamma-ray. These bursts radiation can be observed as gamma- and X- rays bursts.

We describe an algorithm for constructing fractal molecular clouds that obeys prescribed mass and velocity scaling relations.The algorithm involves a random seed, so that many different realisations corresponding to the same fractal dimension and the same scaling relations can be generated. It first generates all the details of the density field, and then position the SPH particles, so that the same simulation can be repeated with different numbers of particles to explore convergence. It can also be used to initialise finite-difference simulations. We then present preliminary numerical simulations of Hii regions expanding into such clouds, and explore the resulting patterns of star formation. If the cloud has low fractal dimension, it already contains many small self-gravitating condensations, and the principal mechanism of star formation is radiatively driven implosion. This results in star formation occurring quite early, throughout the cloud. The stars resulting from the collapse and fragmentation of a single condensation are often distributed in a filament pointing radially away from the source of ionising radiation; as the remainder of the condensation is dispersed, these stars tend to get left behind in the Hii region. If the cloud has high fractal dimension, the cloud does not initially contain dense condensations, and star formation is therefore delayed until the expanding Hii region has swept up a sufficiently massive shell. The shell then becomes gravitationally unstable and breaks up into protostars. In this collect-and-collapse mode, the protostars are distributed in tangential arcs, they tend to be somewhat more massive, and as the expansion of the shell stalls they move ahead of the ionisation front.

The solution of the radiative transfer in an expanding atmospheres using the Monte Carlo method is presented. We applied our method to winds of several OB stars. In our calculation, the velocity and density structure is assumed to be given. Selected line profiles are shown.

We report results of our European VLBI Network observations towards M 87 jet at 1.6 GHz in order to study the velocity field. We revealed continuous jet up to 500 mas from the core and HST-1 component. We have not detected any proper motion for the components within first 160 mas from the core and significant superluminal motions from 2.5 to 3.5 c for the HST-1 components. Those are in good agreement with previous observations. We derived proper motions for the components about 160 to 500 mas from the core. Interestingly, the measured proper motions are faster than that of the inner components and slower than that of HST-1 components. It may suggest the possible acceleration region for superluminal features of M 87 jet.

We are carrying out a search for all radio loud Active Galactic Nuclei observed with XMM-Newton, including targeted and field sources to perform a multi-wavelength study of these objects. We have cross-correlated the Verón-Cetty & Verón (2010) catalogue with the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue (2XMMi) and found around 4000 sources. A literature search provided radio, optical, and X-ray data for 403 sources. This poster summarizes the first results of our study.

Turbulent reconnection is studied by means of two-dimensional (2D) compressible magnetohydrodynamical numerical calculations. The process of homogeneous turbulence is set up by adding two-dimensional random forcing implemented in the spectral space at small wave numbers with no correlation between velocity and forcing. We apply the initial Harris current sheet configuration together with a density profile calculated from the numerical equilibrium of magnetic and gas pressures. We assume that there is no external driving of the reconnection. The reconnection develops as a result of the initial vector potential perturbation. We use open boundary conditions. Our main goal is to find the dependencies of reconnection rate on the uniform resistivity. We present that the reconnection speed depends on the Lindquist number in 2D in the case of low as well as high resolution. When we apply more powerful turbulence the reconnection is faster, however the speed of reconnection is smaller than in the case of our three-dimensional numerical simulations.

Dwarf galaxies are by far the most abundant of all galaxy types, yet their properties are still poorly understood–especially due to the observational challenge that their intrinsic faintness represents. AVOCADO aims at establishing firm conclusions on their formation and evolution by constructing a homogeneous, multiwavelength dataset for a statistically significant sample of several thousand nearby dwarfs (−18 < Mi < −14). Using public data and Virtual Observatory tools, we have built GALEX+SDSS+2MASS spectral energy distributions that are fitted by a library of single stellar population models. Star formation rates, stellar masses, ages and metallicities are further complemented with structural parameters that can be used to classify them morphologically. This unique dataset, coupled with a detailed characterization of each dwarf's environment, allows for a fully comprehensive investigation of their origins and to track the (potential) evolutionary paths between the different dwarf types.

High resolution, multi-wavelength maps of a sizeable set of nearby galaxies have made it possible to study how the surface densities of H i, H2 and star formation rate (ΣHI, ΣH2, ΣSFR) relate on scales of a few hundred parsecs. At these scales, individual galaxy disks are comfortably resolved, making it possible to assess gas-SFR relations with respect to environment within galaxies. ΣH2, traced by CO intensity, shows a strong correlation with ΣSFR and the ratio between these two quantities, the molecular gas depletion time, appears to be constant at about 2 Gyr in large spiral galaxies. Within the star-forming disks of galaxies, ΣSFR shows almost no correlation with ΣHI. In the outer parts of galaxies, however, ΣSFR does scale with ΣHI, though with large scatter. Combining data from these different environments yields a distribution with multiple regimes in Σgas – ΣSFR space. If the underlying assumptions to convert observables to physical quantities are matched, even combined datasets based on different SFR tracers, methodologies and spatial scales occupy a well define locus in Σgas – ΣSFR space.

We have observed formation of penumbrae on a pore in the active region NOAA10838 using Dunn Solar Telescope at NSO, Sunpot, USA. Simultaneous observations using different instruments (DLSP, UBF, Gband and CaK) provide us with vector magnetic field at photosphere, intensity images and Doppler velocity at different heights from photosphere to chromosphere. Results from our analysis of this particular data-set suggests that penumbrae are formed as a result of relaxation of magnetic field due to a flare happening at the same time. Images in Hα show the flare (C 2.9 as per GOES) and vector magnetic fields show a re-orientation and reduction in the global α value (a measure of twist). We feel such relaxation of loop structures due to reconnections or flare could be one of the way by which field lines fall back to the photosphere to form penumbrae.

Mean motion resonances are a common feature of both our own Solar System and of extrasolar planetary systems. Bodies can be trapped in resonance when their orbital semi-major axes change, for instance when they migrate through a protoplanetary disc. We use a Hamiltonian model to thoroughly investigate the capture behaviour for first and second order resonances. Using this method, all resonances of the same order can be described by one equation, with applications to specific resonances by appropriate scaling. We focus on the limit where one body is a massless test particle and the other a massive planet. We quantify how the the probability of capture into a resonance depends on the relative migration rate of the planet and particle, and the particle's eccentricity. Resonant capture fails for high migration rates, and has decreasing probability for higher eccentricities, although for certain migration rates, capture probability peaks at a finite eccentricity. We also calculate libration amplitudes and the offset of the libration centres for captured particles, and the change in eccentricity if capture does not occur. Libration amplitudes are higher for larger initial eccentricity. The model allows for a complete description of a particle's behaviour as it successively encounters several resonances. The model is applicable to many scenarios, including (i) Planet migration through gas discs trapping other planets or planetesimals in resonances; (ii) Planet migration through a debris disc; (iii) Dust migration through PR drag. The Hamiltonian model will allow quick interpretation of the resonant properties of extrasolar planets and Kuiper Belt Objects, and will allow synthetic images of debris disc structures to be quickly generated, which will be useful for predicting and interpreting disc images made with ALMA, Darwin/TPF or similar missions. Magnetic fields are a distinctive feature of accretion disc plasmas around compact objects (i.e., black holes and neutron stars) and they play a decisive role in their dynamical evolution. A fundamental theoretical question related with this concerns investigation of the so-called gravitational MHD dynamo effect, responsible for the self-generation of magnetic fields in these systems. Experimental observations and theoretical models, based on fluid MHD descriptions of various types support the conjecture that accretion discs should be characterized by coherent and slowly time-varying magnetic fields with both poloidal and toroidal components. However, the precise origin of these magnetic structures and their interaction with the disc plasmas is currently unclear. The aim of this paper is to address this problem in the context of kinetic theory. The starting point is the investigation of a general class of Vlasov-Maxwell kinetic equilibria for axi-symmetric collisionless magnetized plasmas characterized by temperature anisotropy and mainly toroidal flow velocity. Retaining finite Larmor-radius effects in the calculation of the fluid fields, we show how these configurations are capable of sustaining both toroidal and poloidal current densities. As a result, we suggest the possible existence of a kinetic dynamo effect, which can generate a stationary toroidal magnetic field in the disc even without any net radial accretion flow. The results presented may have important implications for equilibrium solutions and stability analysis of accretion disc dynamics.

During the Rio General Assembly we held the following meetings of the Working Group: a Business Meeting, a Science Meeting on “The Development of Aperture Synthesis Imaging in Radio Astronomy”, and a Science Meeting on “Recent Research”.

We present results from Monte-Carlo simulations of linear polarization in clumped OB-star winds. We find that previous single-scattering models of clumped winds have overestimated the degree of polarization, even in cases where individual clumps are optically thin. An application to P Cygni suggests the star's wind is more fragmented than previously thought.

In the past decade, several considerable achievements have been reached in the field of Galactic microquasars, especially in light of the extreme variability of their relativistic jets. These jets are now known to exist in at least three different flavours: the self absorbed compact jets in the hard state, the transient and discrete ejection events associated with the state transitions, and the emission associated with the interaction of the jets on the interstellar medium. Although their phenomenology is now starting to be rather well established, their emission and contribution to the total energy budget of microquasars is still the subject of active debate. One way to probe the origin of their emission at various wavelengths is to use the broadband correlations that may exist between different energy domains. Initiated in the radio and X-ray ranges, these broadband flux correlations now include optical and infrared observations of black hole candidates and also neutron star systems. In this review, I also outline the current observational status of the emission of relativistic jets at high energy.

Many stars are formed in some form of cluster or association. These environments can have a much higher number density of stars than the field of the galaxy. Such crowded places are hostile environments: a large fraction of initially single stars will undergo close encounters with other stars or exchange into binaries. We describe how such close encounters and exchange encounters will affect the properties of a planetary system around a single star. We define singletons as single stars which have never suffered close encounters with other stars or spent time within a binary system. It may be that planetary systems similar to our own solar system can only survive around singletons. Close encounters or the presence of a stellar companion will perturb the planetary system, leading to strong planet-planet interactions, often leaving planets on tighter and more eccentric orbits. Thus, planetary systems which initially resembled our own solar system may later more closely resemble the observed extrasolar planetary systems.

The source of the cosmological magnetic field is still unknown because the widely invoked dynamo processes are only able to regenerate and amplify some initial magnetic field seeds. In the hot and highly ionized intergalactic matter such magnetic field seeds can easily be produced by the (electro-)magnetic instabilities of Weibel type. Here we discuss suplementary mechanisms that can make these Weibel created fields to evolve at large scales presently observed in galaxies and clusters and can also enhance these magnetic field seeds after the dissipation.

Two of the dominant channels for galaxy mass assembly are cold flows (cold gas supplied via the filaments of the cosmic web) and mergers. How these processes combine in a cosmological setting, at both low and high redshift, to produce the whole zoo of galaxies we observe is largely unknown. Indeed there is still much to understand about the detailed physics of each process in isolation. While these formation channels have been studied using hydrodynamical simulations, here we study their impact on gas properties and star formation (SF) with some of the first from simulations that capture the multiphase, cloudy nature of the interstellar medium (ISM), by virtue of their high spatial resolution (and corresponding low temperature threshold). In this regime, we examine the competition between cold flows and a supernovae(SNe)-driven outflow in a very high-redshift galaxy (z ≈ 9) and study the evolution of equal-mass galaxy mergers at low and high redshift, focusing on the induced SF. We find that SNe-driven outflows cannot reduce the cold accretion at z ≈ 9 and that SF is actually enhanced due to the ensuing metal enrichment. We demonstrate how several recent observational results on galaxy populations (e.g. enhanced HCN/CO ratios in ULIRGs, a separate Kennicutt Schmidt (KS) sequence for starbursts and the population of compact early type galaxies (ETGs) at high redshift) can be explained with mechanisms captured in galaxy merger simulations, provided that the multiphase nature of the ISM is resolved.

In our earlier study of a revisit of the classic Wilson Effect, it was found that a large proportion of sunspots do not display the geometric effect which is ascribed to a depression of the umbra. It was shown that the presence or absence of the effect, observed close to the limb, depends upon the ambient magnetic configuration of the sunspot. In this follow up study, we look for the impact of changes in ambient magnetic configuration on the measurable properties of sunspots during their disk passage, using observations obtained at the Kodaikanal observatory during 1978-80. Digitized photoheliogram data were used to examine and measure areas of spots and their umbrae for 101 cases. Magnetic field measures published by the Academy of sciences, Leningrad were used to evaluate the ambient magnetic configuration. The results indicate that the extent of magnetic bipolarity is associated with changes in the proportion of the area of the penumbra to that of the umbra. In regular spots, the relative area of penumbra reduces with reduction in the strength of ambient opposite polarity spots and pores. However, in the presence of pore sized blob(s) in penumbra, and with associated emerging fluxes, the penumbra is significantly enlarged. But in the presence of a light bridge or a split umbra, the relative area of penumbra is considerably reduced.
