Genetic correlations between the cross country, dressage and showjumping phases of eventing competition

Competition data is widely used in the genetic evaluation of racing (Belhajyahia et al., 2003) and showjumping horses (Reilly et al., 1998). However, its use in the evaluation of eventing horses is rare. In a previous study, we investigated the use of competition results for the evaluation of eventing horses by examining the component parts of eventing competition – dressage, showjumping and cross country (Kearsley, unpublished). The aim of this study is to estimate genetic correlations between the different phases of eventing competition at pre novice and novice level as part of a project to predict breeding values for British sport horses.
