Monte Carlo domain structure simulation and Debye equation calculation of XRD patterns were used to confirm the formation of domain structure and investigate its peculiarities. Correspondence of simulated XRD patterns with synchrotron powder diffraction experiments is achieved on the conditions that beside of 90o rotations of brownmillerite-like domains inside perovskite-like matrix each domain contains areas with perpendicularly oriented tetrahedral chains. Influence of such parameters as stoichiometry, average domain size, orthorhombic distortion degree on the XRD patterns is considered.

Martensitic transformation and magnetic entropy change in Co substituted Ni50Mn35−xCoxSn15 (x = 0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0) Heusler alloys have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and magnetic measurements. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the Ni50Mn35−xCoxSn15 alloys have L21 Heusler structure at room temperature. The phase decomposition of the sample with x = 3.0, after annealing 48 h at 1173 K, is confirmed by both X-ray powder diffraction analysis and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy in scanning electron microscopy. With the increase of the Co content from 0 to 2.0, the martensitic transformation temperature TM increases from 185 to 245 K, which is in good agreement with the rule of valence electron concentration e/a-dependence of TM. The magnetic entropy change ∆SM is investigated in the vicinity of the martensitic transformation.

The cause of birefringence in several garnet-group minerals with general chemical formula, [8]X3 [6]Y2 [4]Z3 [4]O12, which was observed over 100 years ago, is unknown, although many different reasons were proposed, including symmetry lower than cubic. In this study, electron microprobe analyses (EMPA) were obtained for a Ti-rich andradite, ideally Ca3(Fe2 3+)Si3O12, from Magnet Cove, Arkansas, USA, and the results show that the sample is inhomogeneous with two distinct compositions. The crystal structure was refined by the Rietveld method, cubic space group $Ia\overline 3 d$ , and monochromatic synchrotron high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction (HRPXRD) data, which shows a mixture of three distinct cubic phases that are intergrown together and cause birefringence because of strain arising from small structural mismatch. This mixture of three cubic phases was not observed by any other experimental technique. These results have many implications, including garnet phase transitions from cubic to lower symmetry in the mantle, which has important geophysical consequences.

Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) semiconductors were prepared by arc melting and the vacuum solid reaction. CIGS nanoparticles were synthesized by the mechanical alloy method. The influences of various ball-milling speeds on phase structures for CIGS nanoparticles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystal structures and unit-cell parameters of CIGS nanoparticles were determined using TREOR program and the least squares method. A Rietveld structural refinement was used to determine the atomic occupations and atomic numbers of CIGS prepared under various ball-milling speeds. The least size of agglomerated CIGS nanoparticles should be around 200 nm. CIGS nanoparticles milled at various milling speeds with a tetragonal chalcopyrite structure were obtained according to XRD analyses. However, Ga content in CIGS depends on milling speeds. Based on the structural refinements, the unit-cell parameters are a = 5.693(8)–5.744(9) Å and c = 11.334(9)–11.524(4) Å with gallium content ranging from 0.3 to 0.5. The atomic occupations are corresponding to the 4a crystal site for Cu atoms, the 4b site for In and the 8d site for Se. Ga prefers to occupy the 4b crystal site.

A powder X-ray diffraction method was developed and validated to measure the crystalline impurity 4-(5-cyclopentyloxy-carbonylamino-1-methyl-indol-3-ylmethyl)-3-methoxy-N-o-tolylsulfonylbenzamide hydrate in a pharmaceutical tablet ranging from 0.6 to 3% (w/w). The calibration plot was found to be linear with a correlation coefficient (r2) of 0.996, and was reproducible among operators. The detection limit was determined to be 0.6% with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3:1. The quantitation limit was determined to be 1% with a signal-to-noise ratio of 5:1. Instrument precision at the quantitation limit was 5.8%. Method precision was 6.1% at the quantitation limit and 7.4% at the detection limit. Intermediate precision at the quantitation limit was 7.3% during a 6-month study. Accuracy measurements using crystalline impurity standards prepared in an excipient mixture ranged from 89.3 to 105.5%. Accuracy measurements using tablets containing spiked quantities of crystalline impurity ranged from 72.0 to 92.7%. Accuracy measurements using spiked tablets were complicated because the crystalline impurity was lost during the manufacturing process and a correction factor was used. Ruggedness was assessed by evaluating repetitive assay, repetitive packing, sample packing, and sample stability. Repetitive assays show the exposure of standards to a relative humidity in excess of 57% caused displacement error because of an increase in sample volume and a peak-position shift. Repetitive-packing studies show the analyte was extracted from the sample at a low relative humidity because of a static-charge induction. Sample-packing studies show that two subjective packing techniques were equivalent, and that under- and over-packing samples cause changes in sample density which would not affect results within ±16%. Sample-stability studies show that the quantitation-limit standard was stable as long as the sample was exposed to a relative humidity below 57%.

Publicly available mass absorption coefficients (MAC) tables do not comprise accuracy data and are typically created from relatively old sources. The idea of comparing tables is not new (De Boer), but current software tools make it possible to quickly develop interactive software to analyze the discrepancies in finer detail and get hints to the reason for the difference. Such a tool has been created and used to compare six public domain databases. Several reasons for sizeable discrepancies have been identified, ranging from probable typos to misplaced or missing absorption edges. In addition to the discrepancies that can reasonably be pigeonholed huge differences exist for all elements below 1000 eV. Since there are many cases where reliable standards are scarce or inexistent the development of a better, consistent MAC table especially in the low energy and low Z regions, and with reliable error bars is a requirement for further development of XRF methods in many advanced fields such as waste management, user safety (RoHS), renewable energy sources, and many more. The international initiative for improved FP which involves several industrial and academic organizations aims to address the issue as a whole, i.e. not only for MAC. Creating such a complete database requires considerable resources; the comparison tool may alleviate the effort in the MAC field by readily showing which energy regions and elements deserve more attention.

The crystal structures of KCaVO4 and RbBaVO4, synthesized at high-pressure/high-temperature and by a conventional solid-state reaction, respectively, were determined using X-ray powder diffraction data. These compounds were found to have the β-K2SO4 structure type (space group Pnma, Z = 4) with parameters a = 7.2628(5) Å, b = 5.7258(4) Å, c = 9.6854(7) Å (KCaVO4), and a = 7.8887(1) Å, b = 5.9589(1) Å, c = 10.3958(2) Å (RbBaVO4). The unit cell volume of KCaVO4, 402.77(5) Å3, is significantly lower than for the low-temperature modification reported previously, 436.2 Å3. The difference can be explained by a pressure-induced phase transition to a more dense state resulting from the rotation of tetrahedra and the exchange of oxygen atoms from the first and second coordination spheres for potassium and calcium atoms.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters and space group for C8H20CuN10O8 are presented [a = 5.262 (2) Å, b = 14.051 (3) Å, c = 12.183 (3) Å, β = 96.912 (5)°, unit-cell volume V = 894.3 Å3, Z = 2, space group P21/n]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21/n space group. No detectable impurities were observed.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for deoxyschisandrin, C24H32O6, are reported [a = 13.083(3) Å, b = 19.563(9) Å, c = 8.805(6) Å, β = 90.472(0)°, unit-cell volume V = 2253.82 Å3, Z = 4, and space group P21]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21 space group. No detectable impurity was observed.

Polycrystalline compounds in the Zn1-xNdxCr2Se4 system were prepared by solid state reaction using selenides (ZnSe, Cr2Se3) and pure elements (Nd, Se) as starting materials. The structural properties were determined by X-ray diffraction and the chemical composition confirmed by SEM-EDX. The observed symmetry is cubic, space group Fd3m, while the lattice parameter varies from 10.4955(7)Å to 10.4976(7)Å, and is larger than for the pure matrix. The solubility limit for the current synthesis route lies below x = 0.1. The magnetic moments, effective and saturation, increase with increasing amount of Nd ions. The Neel temperature TN and ΘCW drop, respectively, to 17.4K and 81K for x = 0.1, independently indicating that neodymium is incorporated into the spinel lattice and promotes antiferromagnetic coupling between the Cr3+ ions.

In order to complete the research on the Fe–Se binary system, the phase structures with selenium contents from 50 to 60 at.% have been studied. Fe–Se binary samples used in this study were prepared by the high-temperature solid-state reaction method, and the phase structure of each sample was determined by powder X-ray diffraction. The solid solubility of the Fe3Se4 phase was determined to be from 56.1 to 57.6 at.% Se based on the values of unit-cell parameters. Magnetic properties of the samples were also studied.

The apparatus for X-ray diffraction imaging (XRDI) of 450-mm wafers, is now placed at the ANKA synchrotron radiation source in Karlsruhe, is described in the context of the drive to inspect wafers for plastic deformation or mechanical damage. It is shown that full wafer maps at high resolution can be expected to take a few hours to record. However, we show from experiments on 200-, 300-, and 450-mm wafers that a perimeter-scan on a 450-mm wafer, to pick up edge damage and edge-originated slip sources, can be achieved in just over 10 min. Experiments at the Diamond Light Source, on wafers still in their cassettes, suggest that clean-room conditions may not be necessary for such characterization. We conclude that scaling up of the 300-mm format Jordan Valley tools, together with the existing facility at ANKA, provides satisfactory capability for future XRDI analysis of 450-mm wafers.

A new compound Er3Co4Al12 was prepared by arc melting under argon atmosphere. The powder X-ray diffraction data of Er3Co4Al12 were successfully indexed, giving a hexagonal structure with a = 8.6185(2) Å, c = 9.2347(3) Å, and unit-cell volume V = 594.04 Å3. Compound Er3Co4Al12 has the Gd3Ru4Al12 type-structure, Z = 2 and space group P63/mmc.

The ferroic phase transition in LaEr(MoO4)3 has been analyzed for the first time. It has been confirmed that this compound undergoes a phase transition from a tetragonal system (paraelectric-paraelastic phase), with space group P-421 m [β-Gd2(MoO4)3 averaged phase] to an orthorhombic system (ferroelectric-ferroelastic phase), with space group Pba2 [β'-Gd2(MoO4)3 phase] in a reversible process. This phenomenon, together with the observed demixing at high temperature has been studied using different techniques. LaEr(MoO4)3 samples have been obtained by the conventional solid-state synthesis. The thermal dependence of the crystal structure was studied by powder X-ray and neutron diffraction, following a new refining procedure in which the symmetry modes of atomic displacements from the paraelectric-paraelastic structure were analyzed. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements have confirmed the structural results, showing a very smooth phase transition. Finally, calculations within the framework of Density Functional Theory show a behavior of the lattice parameters similar to that observed in our experiments.

X-ray reflectometry is a powerful tool for investigating rough surface and interface structures. Presently, X-ray reflectivity is based on Parratt formalism, accounting for the effect of roughness by the theory of Nevot–Croce. However, the calculated results showed a strange phenomenon in that the amplitude of the oscillation because of interference effects increases in the case of a specific roughness of the surface. We propose that the strange results originated from the currently used equation because of a serious error in which the Fresnel transmission coefficient in the reflectivity equation is increased at a rough interface, and the increase in the transmission coefficient completely overpowers any decrease in the value of the reflection coefficient because of lack of consideration in diffuse scattering. In the present study, we present a new improved formalism that corrects this error, and thereby derives an accurate analysis of X-ray reflectivity from a multilayer surface, taking into account the effect of roughness-induced diffuse scattering.

Investigations into the morphology and structural evolvement of nanomaterials are essential for understanding the growth process. Herein, we present meaningful results on crystallinity transformation of β-SiC nanorods at different preparation temperatures using X-ray diffraction. Results of the characterization indicated that both crystallinity and yield of the as-prepared β-SiC nanostructures were enhanced with increasing reaction temperature. Scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscope were further employed to understand detailed structural information of the SiC nanorods obtained at specific temperature. The results may shed light on structural evolvement for fabrication of nanomaterials.

X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin with fraxinellone, C42H70O35·C14H16O3·3H2O, are reported [a = 19.294(2) Å, b = 26.639(1) Å, c = 16.467(3) Å, β = 110.451(9)°, cell volume V = 7930.34 Å3, Z = 4 and space group C2]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the C2 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.
