Goethe's first letter to Schiller, in which he agreed to support the Horen, and which marks the beginning of their unique alliance, contains a passage, in effect, as follows:

It will be a most interesting pastime to reach an agreement about the principles which shall govern us in passing judgment on contributions, and to scrutinize their content and form, so that this journal may achieve the highest distinction.
