A number of press accounts suggested that the Executive Council acted in response to Iannone's article “Literature by Quota.” Since that article was published in the March 1991 issue of Commentary and was not listed on the vita the MLA council members reviewed in February, they were unaware of it when they voted on the nomination. In fact, the article did not come to my attention until April.
