He claims that L‘œuvre, Zola's novel of laid in the early 1860's, so that the artist-music whom Zola charges with the discussions of have known only Wagner's earliest L‘œuvre covers quite a long period of time and ably beyond the terminal date of the Rougo series. It opens in July 1862, and extends at is proved by the fact that Jacques, Claude born in February 1864, dies at the age of months before his father's suicide. In fact, Zola himself chronologically in the novel and there dications that it actually closes in 1877, not in
