This talk honors Edward W. Said, who was president of the MLA when it was presented. It would not have been written without the collégial invitation offered by Earl Miner, who challenged me to speak about truth. My use of Samuel Johnson is indebted to Carol Kay (1947–98) and Walter Jackson Bate (1918–99), exemplary students and teachers of Johnson. The critical encouragement of Susan Andrade helped me conclude my work.
