The following Bibliography marks a departure in MLA bibliographical service to its members. From 1919 to 1956 the Annual Bibliography was limited to American writers of books and articles in the field of the modern languages. The MLA Executive Council in February 1955 authorized the cessation of a strictly American bibliography and the inauguration of one which would gradually become international in scope. The following compilation is the initial attempt of the Association to provide this wider scope.
