Footnotes

I am grateful to the Arts and Humanities Research Board, an award from whose Research Leave Scheme enabled me to undertake work on Hertz’s philosophy and, for comments, to members of the audience at a conference on ‘The Tractatus and its History’ at the University of Stirling in September 2005. Quotations from Hertz are from The Principles of Mechanics, presented in a new form, trans. D.E.Jones & J.T.Walley (New York: Dover Publications, 1956). Quotations from Wittgenstein are from Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, trans. D.F.Pears & B.F.McGuinness (London: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1961).
