3 As defined by the author, ‘thematic metamorphosis technique’ refers to the transformation of ‘an originally lyrical theme into its alter ego which can be ecstatic, powerful, heroic and sublime, and which usually arrives as a final climax’ (p. 221). In Chopin's case, it appears most significantly in extended works composed after his arrival in Paris.
