There are two fundamental questions concerning the Prologue, one literary, the other historical. The literary question was raised by Bultmann in his seminal article for the Gunkel Festschrift of 1923: ‘Wie weit ist von dem prāexistenten Logos die Rede, von wo ab von dem in der Geschichte auf-tretenden, d.h. von Jesus?’ The commentators, remarks Bultmann, disxsxsagree on the answer to this question, and this disagreement has persisted. For Bultmann the main difficulty arises from the fact that although v. 14 offers the first explicit statement of the Incarnation, the Christian reader cannot but take vv. 10 f. as an allusion to the life of Jesus, and consequently also v. 5 (which is parallel to it) and probably v. 4 also. Bultmann's solution was to see the Prologue as a pre-Christian Gnostic hymn, stemming from Baptist circles and subsequently taken over by the evangelist and adapted to form the opening of the Gospel. There have been many different answers since.

Leading images in the message to Laodicea (Rev 3.14–22) are often thought to allude to the Laodicean water supply, banks, textiles, and medical school. Re-examination of available evidence, however, shows that this is unlikely. Instead, the references to hot, cold, and lukewarm draw on common dining practices. The admonitions concerning poverty and gold, blindness and eye salve, and nakedness and white garments invoke expressions and commodities that were familiar throughout the region. Using such common images enables the message to address local issues while being read and appropriated by a wider audience.

Eines dürfte wohl mit Sicherheit an der Geschichte der Kirche abzulesen sein: Eine intensive Beschäftigung mit dem, was der Apostel Paulus zu sagen hat, ist keine Arbeit im sog. Elfenbeinturm, keine esoterische und letztlich frustrierende Selbstbeschäftigungstheorie. Wo Paulus wirklich die Gelegenheit gegeben wurde, das Seine zu sagen, da kamen nicht nur die Wellen einer sogenannten akademischen Theologie in Bewegung, sondern auch immer wieder die der Kirche; und die Bewegung der Kirchengeschichte übertrug sich zuweilen sogar auf die Weltgeschichte. Und wenn ich als lutherischer Theologe auf Martin Luther verweisen darf, der ja schließlich als Professor der Exegese zu seiner reformatorischen Entdeckung kam und dies gerade dadurch, daß er sich auf den Römerbrief einließ,1 so ist es doch nur gerecht, wenn ich zugleich darauf aufmerksam mache, daß damals auch Männer der katholischen Reform ihre religiöse Kraft aus Paulus schöpften. Ich nenne hier nur den venezianischen Botschafter beim Wormser Reichstag 1521 und späteren päpstlichen Legaten beim Reichstag zu Regensburg 1541, Kardinal Contarini. Von ihm schreibt Hubert Jedin, daß sein Rechtfertigungserlebnis 1511 (!) mit Luthers Turmerlebnis vergleichbar war und daß er nach 1521 ‘aufgrund der Affinität seiner eigenen Innenentwicklung zu der Überzeugung’ gelangte, ‘daß der religiöse Quellpunkt der Heilslehre Luthers … urkatholisch war’.2 Auf dem Reichstag zu Regensburg einigten sich Katholiken und Protestanten über die Rechtfertigungslehre. Leider kam diese Einigung zu spät. Inzwischen waren andere Kontroverspunkte so dominant geworden, daß Differenzen darin eine Einigung im ‘articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae’ illusorisch machten.

In modern study of the development of theology in the earliest Christian church one of the distinctions most frequently drawn is that between its Palestinian and Hellenistic elements. The purpose of the present paper is to draw together a number of criticisms of certain uses of this classification and hence to assess its validity and usefulness in New Testament research.

o. Der Abschnitt Matth. xvi. 17–19 ist in der Exegese des NT überdurchschnittlich häufig behandelt worden. Selbst die zusammenfassenden Arbeiten gehen über das gute Dutzend weit hinaus. Auch innerhalb der neueren Untersuchungen zum Petruswort divergieren die sprachliche, die historische und die formgeschichtliche Einordnung so sehr, daß eine erneute Untersuchung lohnt.

Since the first significant studies of Semitic influence on the NT published by Wyss, Pasor and Trom in the mid 17th century, there has not been a lack of interest in the topic of the language of the Greek Bible. Treatments of Semitic influence on the Greek of the NT usually concentrate on two issues: the current languages of lst-century Palestine, and various theories regarding the nature of the Greek of the NT. Whatever answers might be posited for the other books of the NT, few scholars have been completely satisfied with estimations given concerning the Apocalypse. Here most acutely the question of the languages used in Palestine during the 1st century overlaps with, if it is not dependent upon, the question of the nature of the Greek of the NT.

In 1859 Friedrich Düsterdieck, then Director of Studies at the Prediger-seminar in the Monastery of Loccum near Hannover, published a commentary on the Revelation of John. It was his contribution to the series inaugurated in 1829 by another Hanoverian cleric, Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer. Commenting upon the description in Rev 14. 4 of the 144,000 elect, οῡτοί είσιν οί μετὰ γυναικην ούκ έμολύνθησαν παρθένοι γάρ είσιν, Düsterdieck wrote:

‘παρθένοι) Das Prädicat wird nicht selten auch Männern gegeben. Vgl. Fabricius, Cod. apocr. vet. Test. II, p. 92.98 (wo Joseph ein άνὴρ παρθένος heisst), Kypke, Observ. sacr. ad h.1. (παρθένον υα, aus Nonnus ad Joh. 19,26), Suidas, s.v. ‘Άβελ.’

Die Leidensgeschichte bei Matthus ist ein geeigneter Ausgangspunkt fr eine Diskussion ber synoptische Fragen und Probleme der Evangelienforschung. Das ist sie zunchst deshalb, weil das literarkritische Verhltnis hier besonders klar zu Tage liegt. Die Matthus-Passion steht der Markus-Passion sehr nahe. Alle Episoden des Markus-Berichtes finden sich auch bei Matthus, es fehlen nur ein paar kurze Notizen (Mark. xiv. 51 f.; xv. 21 b) und dazu einige ausmalende Einzelheiten (Mark. xiv. 34, 7, 1215, 40, 569, 67; xv. 7, 445; xvi. 15) Noch bemerkenswerter ist, da die Ordnung und Reihenfolge innerhalb der Passionsgeschichte bei Matthus und Markus ohne Ausnahme dieselbe ist. In groem Umfange finden sich wrtliche oder beinahe wrtliche bereinstimmungen. Ein Vergleich mit Lukas und Johannes lt sofort erkennen, wie nahe Matthus and Markus zusammengehren. Bei ihnen liegen zwei Varianten eines and desselben Berichtes vor.

Noting the conjunction of ‘mercy’ and ‘Israel’ in Galatians 6.16 and Romans 9–11, this article argues that in both letters ‘Israel’ denotes the Jews. In Galatians 6.16, with an on-going mission to the Jews in view, Paul invokes peace on those who live according to the new creation, and mercy on unbelieving Israel. In Romans 9–11, he draws on both Scripture and his own experience of mercy to revisit the question of Israel's destiny, discerning therein a providential pattern of a divine call that is interrupted by obduracy under the law, and ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

This study argues in three stages that virtually everything the Book of Acts says about Aquila and Priscilla can be derived or inferred from materials in the Pauline letters or can plausibly be attributed to the author's own literary, theological, and/or apologetic agenda. The argument supports the following propositions: (a) that the author of Acts knew and used at least some of the Pauline letters, (b) that Acts reflects a distinctly anti-feminist bias, (c) that the author's agenda included an anti-Marcionite component, and (d) that Acts is to be dated in the second century and perhaps as late as the middle of the century.

Mary, Thecla, Perpetua and Felicitas are often seen as female exempla both in the early Christian world and in their modern reception. They are considered model teachers, martyrs and apostles, and counter-cultural as they surpass the normative gender hierarchy. Yet, the texts that tell their stories are not so clear-cut. In characterising their protagonists, they repeatedly place them in sexualized or subordinate roles – they are condescended to, distrusted and exhibited. In the end, the women are favoured by the divine but hold little power over their male peers. Even as these texts appear to challenge the patriarchal society from which they stem, they reinscribe it.

Galatians 4.21-31 opens with a brief allusion to events recounted in Genesis 16-17, to which Paul aptly appends the following comment: ατινα εστιν αλληγορουμενα (4.24). Through a re-evaluation of the meaning of the verb αλληγορεω in the context of Hellenistic rhetoric and by setting Paul's own hermeneutic in the context of Jewish hermeneutical norms of the first century, this paper argues that Paul's allegory of the two covenants is more reflective of Jewish reading practices which sought to eschatologize the Torah, such as Paul's reading of Gen 16.1 through its haftarah, Isa 54.1, rather than Christian typology.

Pauline theology is a well-established undertaking in modern New Testament studies, and yet it is almost entirely without precedent prior to the nineteenth century. This article explores the enterprise of Pauline theology by considering an important and overlooked exception to its otherwise exclusively modern provenance: Priscillian of Avila's fourth-century Canons on the Letters of the Apostle Paul. The key to Priscillian's dogmatic synthesis of Paul's thought was his innovative ‘versification’ of Paul's letters, which facilitated efficient citation and cross-referencing of epistolary data. This article uses Priscillian's literary creation to examine the intriguing correlation of technologies for ordering textual knowledge with the systematic abstraction of Pauline theology.

This article introduces extra-canonical traditions into the debate about the purpose of the gospels and the risks of sociological mirror-reading. Often seen as reflecting sectarian communities, some of these texts are actually no more ‘heterodox’ than their canonical counterparts, and might just as well have been written ‘for all Christians’. However, applying similar criteria, we find that canonical as well as extra-canonical gospels are best understood as intended for a group of churches with similar outlook. Why certain gospels came to be widely distributed had more to do with power structures; intention and reception should not be confused.

Soll im Rahmen einer ‘Politischen Theologie’ nach deren neutestamentlichen Grundlagen gefragt werden, dann ist implizit immer auch nach dem Stellenwert der paulinischen Mahnung zur Unterordnung unter die übergeordneten Gewalten in Röm 13. 1–7 gefragt. Die Relevanz gerade dieses Textes ist vornehmlich auch durch seine ausgeprägte Wirkungsgeschichte mitverursacht. Die Definition der Relation von Gott und weltlicher Obrigkeit mit Hilfe einer Verbindung profaner und theologischer Topoi läßt den Text in der Kirchengeschichte zu einem ‘locus classicus’ der Auseinandersetzung von Staat und Kirche werden. Die differente Rezeption der Textaussagen umreißt den Problemhorizont jeder heutigen Auslegung: Im Sinne der klassischen katholischen Exegese kann der Text als ein Stück natürlicher Theologie interpretiert werden. Aus den die Mahnung zur Unterordnung begriindenden Versen lb–3a kann demzufolge eine Staatslehre mit metaphysischem Gehalt deduziert werden. Diese Auslegungstradition setzt sich als Nebenlinie in dem Interesse konservativ-lutherischer Theologie an einer biblischen Legitimation für die Rekonstituierung der augustinischen Trennung des ‘regnum civile’ von dem ‘regnum Christi’ fort. Beide Interpretationsmodelle werden auch in der heutigen exegetischen Forschung vertreten.

Der geographische und chronologische Rahmen des vierten Evangeliums weicht bekanntlich stark von demjenigen der synoptischen Evangelien ab, und ein Blick auf die Auslegungsgeschichte zeigt, wie schwierig es ist, den Bauplan des Buchesnachzuzeichnen. Natürlich ist die Frage eng verwoben mit dem Problem der Einheitlichkeit des vierten Evangeliums, auf das hier nicht weiter eingegangen werden kann.

Proposals urging that 1 Corinthians is a composite of two or more letters have not won wide support. Those who reject such proposals argue that the letter's abrupt shifts in subject matter can be readily accounted for by deeming them Paul's seriatim response to a diverse range of issues and problems made known to him through a combination of oral reports (1.11; 5.1; 11.18; 15.12) and a letter from the Corinthians (7.1). While 2 Corinthians is widely regarded as a composite of several letters, 1 Corinthians by contrast is not.
