2 τιμη: sweriþos from vc. 15, 25 (John v. 23; otherwise one could expect δόξα (wulpus, hauheins).

3 ip is expletive; patei is conjunctive; the sentence is anacoluthic: see Streiberg ad loc. (N.T.S. IX, 51) and above, p. 278.Google Scholar

4 The MS reading pana (tantum: thus also Bennett) would require τ⋯ν (without μέν), which is possible: cf. Blass, §§447 (2) and 306 (3) τ⋯ μ⋯ν…τ⋯δʾ ⋯λλо.

5 The restricted use of μέν in N.T. and later Greek is reflected by the absence of any equivalent here in the Gothic.

6 ταυτα: the pl. being regularly repr. by the sing. in Gothic; see N.T.S. x, 501 note 20.Google Scholar

7 insok I render by υροτίθεσθαι, a word of many shades of meaning, incl. ‘subjoin, set before one, demonstrate’ (L.& S., and passim). Cf. esp. I Tim. iv. 6 ταυτα ύροτιθέμενος: Pata insakands: haec proponens, where proponere = submit, quasi ‘propone’, the basic meaning of which comes close to that in the present passage. Cf. also Gal. ii. 2 άνεθέμην: ussok: contuli; ύροτίθεσθαι sounds rather precious: έδειξεν would have been adequate.

8 Cf. Col. ii. 17 των μελλόντων: Pize anawairpane: futurorum.

9 See Blass, § 369 (1).

10 κατά ταυτα faute; de mieux; cf. Luke iv. 23 κατά ταυτα: bi pamma: secundum haec; G.-L. Gloss ‘aufdiese Weise’.

11 Rom. x. 9 όμολογήσης: andhitis confitearis.

12 mipqipaina: see N.T.S. IX, 45. The Gothic subj. represents a subj. in Greek rather than the infin., which would accord with όμολογεīν: andhaitan.

13 anduh pana laist (see also II d 14 and pana pize laist) represents a rather vague use of κατʾ ⋯χνоς, quasi ‘and following this up…’

14 κρησθαι c. dat., but in later Greek also c. acc. (Blass, §, 152 (4)). Goth. brukjan takes the gen.

15 John v. 21 (wanting in the C.A.) is the φανερός λόγος of v a 25–b 1.

16 Presumably a purposive clause, the construction being gap (1. I)…ei (1. 7)…gasok (1. 16) ‘He spoke (these words) so as… to rebuke them’, but then the verb ought to be in the subj., (ei) gasoki = (⋯να) έλέγξῃ, the (i) of which I restore.

17 μιμούμενος c. acc. (cf. 2 These. iii. 7 μιμεīσθαι ήμας: galeikon) rather than όμοίως ροιωυν (John v. 19 c. acc.).

18 έραγγέλλειν here = announce, against III c 18 ‘promised’ gahaihait: έρηγγειγατο (N.T.S. VIII, 53 note 36).

19 Perhaps a calque on *θρασυτολμίαν cf. θρασύτολμος ‘bold’ (Sophocles, Lex.), and see N.T.S. IX, 46.

21 ip = εί: see N.T.S. IX, 51.

22 bi insahtai = κατά διήγησιν cf. I Cor. subscr. (Cod. A) bi silbins apausaulaus insahtai; also Luke i. 1.

23 missaleikaim: ροικίλοις cf. II d 3 us missaleikom wistim. See N.T.S. VIII, 50 note 30.

24 ρως without άν: see Blass, § 360 (1, 2).

25 For the omission of άν, see Blass, § 360 (1, 2), and cf. Ib6 mahtedi swepauh…galasjon.

26 δυοίν: see Blass, § 63 (1); but Matt. xxi. 31 τίς έκ των δύο.

27 ένεργείας: cf. Phil. iii. 21 κατά τήν ένέργειαν: bi waurstwa: secundum operatinem.

28 2 Cor. viii. 24 ένδειξιν…ένδείξαοθε ustaiknjandans: ostensionem…ostendite; cf. also Phil. i. 28 ένδειξις άρωλείας: ustaikneins fralulstais.

29 anparana raihtis is the exact equivalent of άλλον μέν for άλλον δέ see comment on the Gothic text of (c) in N.T.S. IX, 51, 55.

30 John v. 22 (not in the C.A.) ούδέ γάρ ό ρατήρ κρίνει ούδένα, άλλά τήν κρίσιν ρασαν δέδωκεν τω υΙω viii. 15 έγώ σύ κρίνω σύδένα ip ik ni stoja ainnohun.

31 John x. 29 δέδωκεν: fragaf; 2 Cor. xiii. 10 έδωκεν: fragaf; Gal. i. 4 του δόντος έαυτόν: izei gaf sik silban; I Tim. ii. 6 ό δούς: sa gibands.

32 John v. 27 (not in C.A.) καί έξουσίαν έδωκεν αύτω κρίσιν ροιειν.

33 skulum: δεί: see N.T.S. IX, 51.

35 Cf. the parallel skeiris (waurdis) in v a 25.

36 διήγησίς = insahts, as in v b 22, VI a 3, b 17.

38 I adopt Bennett's reading gakunnan but cannot justify it. Formally, ana- can represent έρι-, which appears as ana- 23 times, and as ga- 75 times (Rice, A. C., Gothie Prepositional Compounds in their Relation to their Greek Originals, Philadelphia, 1932).Google Scholar The contextual meaning is that of late Greek (έριγινώσκειν, as in 'Ιησουν όν….έρέγνωμεν κριστόν υΙόν Θεου (Justin, in Lampe, Patr. Gr. Lex.).

39 For the use of eipan = ei (ώστε), see N.T.S. IX, 51. The Gothic requires the subj.; in Greek, the indicative is indicated.

40 λκανότης appears in 2 Cor. iii. 5 ή ίκανότης ήμων: so wairpida unsars: sufficientia. Its use here seems to be justified; cf. Streitberg's note, citing Theod.; λκανότητα needs some kind of stop.

41 See N.T.S. ix, 51.

42 Cf. 1 a 13 ni ibna nih galeiks (N.T.S.. viii, 46 and note 3).

43 Cf. Matt. v. 44 bidjap bi: ρροσεύκεσθε ύρέρ orate pro.

44 frijos, alteration of John xvii. 23 frijodes = ήγάρησας. Whether the alteration goes back to the original cannot be determined.

46 Cf. John xi. 4 δι' αύτης: þairh þata.

47 Cf. II a 15 Ustaiknida, N.T.S. viii, 49 note 12.

48 Cf. 2 Tim. iii. 8 όν τρόρον δέ: aþþan þamma haidau and 2 Thess. ii. 3 κατά μηδένα τρόρον: hwamma haidau. Here samin calls for its equivalent αύτόν as in τρόρον τόν αύτόν, also τουτον τόν τρόρον (L. & S.).

1 These are only formal equivalents; the Greek construction cannot be divined, nor the approximate context. No one has suggested the (absolute) datives kunnandin, and pagg kjandin.

2 Andþaggkjan only here (sik) and l. 18 (without sik), and in Luke xvi. 4 έγνων: andþahta mik. The reflexive could represent the mid. άναμιμνήσκεσθαι, in later Gr. ‘recall to mind’ + gen.(Lampe, citing Justin); also pass.+acc. rei in Mark xiv. 72, and gen. rei (L. & S.).

3 analeiko:cf. Luke xvii. 28 όμοίως και ώς: samaleiko jah swe.

4 mikilduþs occurs also in iv b 17, 25; μέγεθος (= mikilei) only once in Greek N.T. (Eph. i. 19).

5 wairþidos also v d 7 (see above, p. 281 n. 40) of the Father and the Son.

6 andþaggkjands: see p. 282 n. 2.

7 Cf. Eph. v. 6 διά ταυτα: þairh þroþter haec and see viii 9 þoh þan, N.T.S. x, 500 and note 20.

8 Cf. Mark xi. 14 και άροκριθεις εīρεν: jah usbairands qaþ.

9 andtilonds+dat.as in Luke xvi. 13 ainamma andtiloþ (=άνθέξεται); for the Greek, cf. Eph. iv. 2 άνεχόμενοι άλλήλων: usþulands, Mark ix. 19 (cf. Luke ix. 41) ρότε άνέξομαι ύμων: hwa þulau.

10 Niuklahei, only here (N.T.S. ix, 45), is best rendered by νηριότης cf. niuklahs in N.T. = νήριος: parvulus.

11 The passage ip eis…gatawidedun is a free rendering of John vi. 10 ην δέ…άνέρεσαν ουν iþ eis (after iþ frauja) þo filusna anakumbjan gatawidedun = (οι δέ…) τό ρληθος άναρεσεīν έροιησαν. I have enclosed the dative absolute construction in brackets, this being a remarkable rendering by the Gothic translator or some later individual of the finite verb in the Greek. The passage does not read well, in any case. Cf. the comments on some dative absolutes in iv, N.T.S. viii, 44f. Cf. also at ni wisandin (below, n. 15).

12 Cf. Matt. xiv. 21 άνδρες ώσει ρεντακισχιλίοι χωρίς γυναικων κί ραιδίων. John vi. 10 reads swaswe fimf þusundjos.

13 Cf. Luke xx. 46 έν τοīς δείρνοις (wanting in Gothic).

17 Cf. Luke ix. 16 λαβών…εύλόγησεν: nimands…gaþiuþida and John vi. II έύχαριστήσας διέδωκέν awiliudonds gadailida.

18 Cf. Luke i. 53 gredagans gasoþida: ρέινωντας ένέρλησεν, and Acts xiv. 17 έμριρλων τροφης.

19 Cf. W. Bauer τό άρκέτόν της τροφης; also as predicative adj. in N.T.

20 After John vi. 13 τοīς βεβρωκόσιν: þaim matjandam. Cf. Mark i. 14 μετά δέ τό ραραδοθηναι 'λωάννην: iþ afar þatei atgibans warþ.

21 The passage c 10–25 is discussed on p. 281.

22 Cf. N.T.S. ix, 52.

23 Cf. Eph. i. 19 τό μης δυνάμεως αύτου: mikileins mahtais is; seinaizos (preceding its noun is emphatic. Cf. above, n. 4.

24 The passage c 10–25 is discussed on p. 281.

25 las should be corrected to galas. See p. 281, and cf. John vi. 12, 13 galisiþ, galesum.

26 Perh. represents ρληροφορεīν‘to convince fully’, etc. (W. Bauer); in Mark xv. 15 managein fullafahjan: populo stisfacere, the Greek has τό ίκανόν ροιησαι. For fulla- cf. Col. iv. 12 ρερληρωμένοι: fullawitans.

27 Cf. vi a 15 maudeiþ: éναμιμνη'σκéι (N.T.S.) x, 371), 2 Tim. i. 6 άναμιμνησκω σε άναзωρυρεīν: gamaudja: admoneo.

28 gaumjan: properly ‘to see’ in the present sense (observe consider), peculiar to Skeireins perh. represents βλ⋯πειν in similar uses recorded in Lampe, Patr. Gr. Lex.

29 ⋯κεῙνоς for is: a peculiarly Johannine word.

30 The Skeireins text differs from that of the Codex Argenteus in a few minor details; jah.b. fiskam is an arbitrary addition.
