Grotius and Grotius Research in the Netherlands

1983 sees the 400th anniversary of Grotius' birth. This is an appropriate time to consider what the Netherlands has made of – and is still making of – the enormous heritage of this great Dutchman.

The chronological list of first editions of Grotius' works in the bibliography by Ter Meulen and Diermanse contains over 120 titles, which have on average each had ten editions (or translations), in total, approximately 1,300 title descriptions. The Grotius collection in the Peace Palace has at least 1,000 of these (including copies). There are at least 100 editions/translations of De jure belli ac parts, which are almost all available in the Peace Palace. (Cf., nn. 47 and 65.)
