Footnotes

An article by W. A. H. Godley and J. R. Shepherd, ‘Forecasting Imports’, describes the techniques used in short-term import forecasting. A second article, by W. A. H. Godley and C. Gillion, analyses pricing behaviour in manufacturing industry; the main conclusion is that there is no evidence for the ‘ratchet’ theory of pricingthat manufacturers raise prices when costs rise, but never reduce them when costs fall. There is an Appendix on ‘Methods ofpresenting the balance of payments of the United States’. An article, ‘Social Security in Britain and certain other countries’, by Mrs. M. F. W. Hemming, assembles some basic facts for assessing the social security system of this country, and provides a comparison with arrangements in some other countries.
