Abstract

Following dissatisfaction with the existing calibration factor for standard fly ash used in Australia to AS 1129–1971, “Fly Ash for Use in Concrete,” a joint investigation was made by Amatek Limited and Construction Technology Laboratories Inc. Test results for five reference materials and two Australian fly ashes from tests to ASTM C 430 on both electroformed and woven wire sieves were examined and “corrected” by several means.

The ASTM standard method of sieve correction is challenged, both in the use of Standard Reference Material (SRM) cement and the basis of sieve correction for coarse samples. Preferred bases of correction are suggested.
