Abstract

The surface chemistry of 35 Å diameter CdSe quantum crystallites is varied by bonding different molecules to the surface of the crystallites. There are two main variables. The steric hindrance of the molecule is altered to control the density of dangling bonds at the surface. In addition, different bond types between the ligand and surface atoms were used to control the surface electron density. Nanosecond hole burning experiments were used to compare ground state recovery times. Luminescence revealed information on excited state recombination pathways. Analysis suggests that increased surface passivation reduces the fast nonradiative recombination.
