The solidification morphology dictates the type of crystal growth for crystallites during solidification. As a result of this process, the casting may be unsound due to the presence of shrinkage cavities, internal shrinkage, sinks and hot tears. Therefore, it is important to have a knowledge of the solidification process to avoid these defects and to produce a sound casting.
