Abstract

ANSTO has studied material resulting from an In Situ Vitrification (ISV) trial on contaminated soil from the Maralinga nuclear weapons test range in Australia. The investigations included determining the distribution of Pu and α-activity in the intermediate scale melt, leach testing of sub-samples from the melt, and physical characterisation of the ISV material, prior to and after leaching. The results show that Pu is well mixed though the whole vitrified/ceramic block from the ISV trials at Maralinga and the durability of the vitrified/ceramic product ensures that the Pu is satisfactorily encapsulated.
