The principal defects in the stoichiametric chalcogenide glass GeSe2 are identified as hcapolar bonds which break the chemical order of the network. Glass compositional variation of this broken symmetry indicates that the hcmopolar bonds are not randcmly distributed in the network but dress edges of characteristic clusters. The cluster morphology is based on the layered structure of the stoichiametric crystalline ccmpound. The size of molecular clusters in the glass is found to be 50–75 Å
