Abstract

The conventional Fenton mechanism is reviewed and then slightly modified to incorporate additional data. Following the DuPont attack mechanism closely, we explain why the FER is proportional to the carboxylic acid end-group concentration in Fenton tests. We then make a case that in-cell testing introduces additional decay reactions operating locally in the membrane. These additional reactions explain the shape of the FER vs. time curve and why the FER is nearly independent of the carboxylate end group concentration. A semi-quantitative model is introduced to support the self consistency of the proposed reaction scheme.
