The future of the nuclear industry and its acceptance by public opinion depend to a large extent on the development of an acceptable solution for waste management and disposal. The long duration of the hazard presented by certain radionuclides found in nuclear wastes is certainly one of the reasons for public concern over definitive waste disposal.
