Abstract

We describe theoretical results for part of the Gibbs free energy surface as a function of shape and temperature for small particles. We predict the existence of true ‘quasi-melting’ at temperatures much below the conventional melting points and also phase transitions between different stable forms as the temperature is varied. A phase diagram for small particles is constructed for the first time, showing the stability ranges for different particle shapes as a function of size and temperature.
