Abstract

Eight new 4'-acyl-4-biphenylol esters 5a∼h were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties were tested by PM and DSC. These compounds have wider mesomorphic transition temperature ranges and higher clearing points. The compound 5g in which there is no chiral carbon exhibits a stripped focal conic texture in its Sc mesophase. The effect of the molecular structure on the liquid crystal properties was discussed.
