Gels and Gel-Derived Glasses in the SiO2 GeO2 System

Abstract

Gels and gel-monoliths in the SiO2 -GeO2 system were prepared by different procedures using metal alkoxides as starting materials. Several gel compositions with increasing GeO2 were prepared. Crystallization behavior of gels in relation to the preparation procedures, homogeneity, and molecular structure of gels is discussed. Supercritically dried porous gel-monoliths of high silica compositions were densified into glass by sintering at 1280°C.
