Abstract

It is proposed that the effects of crystalline inclusions on the mechanical properties of metallic glasses are due to the presence of compressive stress-fields arising from the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the crystals and the glass. Because of the dilatational micro-mechanism of plastic flow in metallic glasses these compressive stresses raise the tensile fracture stress but reduce the hardness. The temperature dependence of the hardness changes in partially crystallised Fe40Ni40P14B6 is consistent with this model.
