Human organoid models recapitulate many aspects of the complex composition and function of native organs. One of the main challenges in developing these models is the growth and maintenance of three-dimensional tissue structures and proper cellular organization that enable function. Biomaterials play an important role by providing a defined and tunable three-dimensional environment that is required for complex cellular organization and organoid growth in vitro or in vivo. This review summarizes organoids of the respiratory and digestive system, and the use of biomaterials to improve upon these model systems.

LiFe1−xYxPO4 doped (d-LFP) with amounts of yttrium (0.01% < x < 5% w/w) show a remarkable effect on the electrochemical behavior. The d-LPF samples were investigated on the Li extraction/insertion performance through charge/discharge and capacity–voltage curves. The best performance was attained with Y content of x = 1%. The materials were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). The XRD studies showed that d-LPF had the same monoclinic structure as the undoped material. The achieved electrode performance has been attributed to the addition of Y3+ ion by stabilizing the orthorhomic structure. The electrode resistance decreases through the Y-doping.

Doping is a potent and often used strategy to modify properties of active electrode materials in advanced electrochemical batteries. There are several factors by which doping changes properties critically affecting battery performance, most notably the voltage, capacity, rate capability, and stability. These factors have to do specifically with changes in structure, band gap and band structure, and structural instability induced by doping. We review our recent modeling works on the effects of doping of active electrode materials, notably for prospective materials for organic and post-lithium (Na ion, Mg ion) batteries, as well as present new results, to build a coherent view on the use of n- and p-doping to modulate Li, Na, and Mg storage properties, most notably voltage. Specifically, we clearly point out effects due to electronic structure and those due to strain (structural instability), which clears some confusion about the effects of n- versus p-doping and facilitates rational rather than ad hoc design of doped materials.

The tunnel field-effect transistor (TFET) is one of the candidates replacing conventional metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors to realize low-power-consumption large-scale integration (LSI). The most significant issue in the practical application of TFETs concerns their low tunneling current. Si is an indirect-gap material having a low band-to-band tunneling probability and is not favored for the channel. However, a new technology to enhance tunneling current in Si-TFETs utilizing the isoelectronic trap (IET) technology was recently proposed. IET technology provides a new approach to realize low-power-consumption LSIs with TFETs. The present paper reviews the state-of-the-art research and future prospects of Si-TFETs with IET technology.

The great properties of the paramagnetic nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center in diamond predestine it for nanoscale sensor applications; however, these properties are often compromised when NV centers reside near diamond surface for sensing. Here we show in a mini review that first-principles calculations can characterize diamond surfaces and predict the ideal surface terminators to host NV sensors. We discuss technical issues on the modeling of NV centers close to diamond surfaces, and results on the most employed diamond (100) and the most promising (111) surfaces with various terminators involving hydrogen, oxygen, fluorine, and nitrogen are presented.

A non-precious metal catalytic system of Fe-doped Ta2O5 is developed by pulsed laser deposition toward efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimal Fe concentration is determined to be 5 at.% for optimized OER activity via a series of electrochemical characterizations. The 5 at.% Fe-doped Ta2O5 nanolayer possesses a low onset overpotential of 0.22 V, an overpotential of 0.38 V at 10 mA/cm2 and a Tafel slope of 54 mV/dec. Comprehensive first-principles calculations attribute the enhanced OER activity to the substitutional FeTa dopants, which generate a new active OER site on surface and simultaneously accelerate electron transfer over oxygens.

Here we report a doping method based on charge transfer interaction for an easily obtainable carbon material, carbon black (acetylene carbon black and Ketjenblack), as a main raw material. The n-type doping of those carbon blacks, generally p-type material, was conducted with a molecular dopant, triphenylphosphine (tpp). The key was to modify the surface of carbon blacks with silver (Ag) nanoparticles to attach tpp molecules on the surface of Ag. Our method is expected to be used for the fabrication of functional devices (such as thermoelectric devices) from p- and n-type materials.

Here we report on the material chemistry following crystallization in the presence of water vapor of chlorinated formamidinium lead-triiodide (NH2CH = NH2PbI3−xClx) perovskite films. We found in-situ exposure to water vapor reduces, or possibly eliminates, the retention of chlorine (Cl) inside NH2CH = NH2PbI3−xClx crystals. There is a strong tendency toward Cl volatility, which indicates the sensitivity of these materials for their integration into solar cells. The requisite for additional efforts focused on the mitigation of water vapor is reported. Based on the in situ results, hot casting (<100 °C) in dry conditions demonstrates improved film coverage and Cl retention with efficiencies reaching 12.07%.

In this paper, a simple evolution equation for dislocation densities moving on a slip plane is proven. This equation gives the time evolution of dislocation density at a general field point on the slip plane, due to the approach of new dislocations and tilting of dislocations already at the field point. This equation is fully consistent with Acharya's evolution equation and Hochrainer et al.’s “continuous dislocation dynamics” (CDD) theory. However, it is shown that the variable of dislocation curvature in CDD is unnecessary if one considers one-dimensional flux divergence along the dislocation velocity direction.

NV centers in silicon carbide have been identified in the three main polytypes 3C, 4H, 6H by magnetic resonance and photoluminescence experiments and related ab initio calculations. Their properties show them to be promising centers for applications in quantum technology, similar to the case of NV in diamond. However, their spectral range is in the near-infrared, which should allow their integration in telecommunication systems.

Zirconium thin films were irradiated at room temperature with an 800 keV Zr+ beam using a 6 MV HVE Tandem accelerator to 1.36 displacement per atom damage. Freestanding tensile specimens, 100 nm thick and 10 nm grain size, were tested in situ inside a transmission electron microscope. Significant grain growth (>300%), texture evolution, and displacement damage defects were observed. Stress–strain profiles were mostly linear elastic below 20 nm grain size, but above this limit, the samples demonstrated yielding and strain hardening. Experimental results support the hypothesis that grain boundaries in nanocrystalline metals act as very effective defect sinks.

We used density functional theory to investigate the electrochemical CO2 reduction and competing hydrogen evolution reaction on model Au, Ag, Cu, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, and Rh nanoparticles. On the coinage metal, the free energy of adsorbed COOH, CO, and H intermediates generally becomes more favorable with decreasing particle size. This pattern was also observed on all transition metals with the binding of the intermediates observed to be stronger on almost all of these metals. Comparative studies of the reaction profile reveal that H2 evolution is the first reaction to be energetically allowed at zero applied bias.

In this work, effects of heat treatment on the heterojunction between MoOx and ZnO quantum dots (QDs) are analyzed possibly for the first time. Solution-processed and thermal deposition technique is used for the growth of MoOx over the ZnO QDs and compared for the electrical analysis. The absorption and photoluminescence properties of ZnO QDs and MoOx have been analyzed for the optical behavior. Further, the heat-treated heterojunctions are analyzed for built-in potential (0.25 V), carrier density (~2.9 × 1018 cm−3), and responsivity (3.93 mAW−1). The heterojunction of solution-processed MoOx and ZnO QDs shows better stability after heat treatment compared with other devices.

Investment in brighter sources and larger detectors has resulted in an explosive rise in the data collected at synchrotron facilities. Currently, human experts extract scientific information from these data, but they cannot keep pace with the rate of data collection. Here, we present three on-the-fly approaches—attribute extraction, nearest-neighbor distance, and cluster analysis—to quickly segment x-ray diffraction (XRD) data into groups with similar XRD profiles. An expert can then analyze representative spectra from each group in detail with much reduced time, but without loss of scientific insights. On-the-fly segmentation would, therefore, result in accelerated scientific productivity.

We present the first characterization of strongly scale-dependent charge transport of a unique, hierarchical complex topology: an interconnected random network of silicon quantum dots (QDs) and nanowires. We show that this specific topology has different charge transport characteristics on the nanoscale and the microscale: photogenerated charge carriers tend to be confined inside the QDs and externally injected charge carriers flow preferably along the nanowires. The former enables expression of quantum confinement properties, and the latter mainly contributes to the good electrical conduction on the microscale. Our findings strongly suggest that this multifunctionality can be controlled and used in photovoltaic device applications.

Partial aging of AA6060 aluminum alloys is known to result in a microstructure characterized by needle-shaped Si/Mg-rich precipitates. These precipitates belong to the non-equilibrium β″ phase and are coherent with the face-centered cubic Al lattice, despite of which they can cause considerable hardening. We have investigated the interaction between these β″ precipitates and dislocations using a unique combination of modeling and experimental observations. Dislocation-precipitate interactions are simulated using dislocation dynamics (DD) parameterized with atomistic simulations. The elastic fields due to the precipitates are described by a decay law fitted to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy measurements. These fields are subsequently used in DD to study the strength of individual precipitates as a function of size and dislocation character. Our results can be used to parameterize crystal plasticity models to calculate the strength of AA6060 at the macroscopic level.

The practical realization of energy-efficient computing vectors is imperative to address the break-down in the scaling of power consumption with transistor dimensions, which has led to substantial underutilized chip space. Memristive elements that encode information in multiple internal states and reflect the dynamical evolution of these states are a promising alternative. Herein we report the observation of pinched loop hysteretic type-II memristive behavior in single-crystalline nanowires of a versatile class of layered vanadium oxide bronzes with the composition δ-[M(H2O)4]0.25V2O5 (M = Co, Ni, Zn), the origin of which is thought to be the diffusion of protons in the interlayer regions.

A variety of applications from insulation to catalytic supports can benefit from lightweight, high surface area, mesoporous materials, which maintain their mesoporous structure to temperatures of 900–1200 °C. Silica aerogels begin to densify by 700 °C. Alumina aerogels are capable of higher temperature exposure than their silica counterparts, but undergo successive phase transformations to form transitional aluminas prior densifying to α-alumina. The present study characterizes the phase transitions of aluminosilicate aerogels derived from Boehmite powders to elucidate the role of time and temperature on phase transitions, surface area, and morphology. Aerogel compositions stable to 1200 °C for periods of 24 h have been demonstrated.

The theories to describe the rate at which electrochemical reactions proceed do not consider explicitly the dimensionality or the occupancy of the energy levels of nanostructured electrodes. It is shown here that the density of states variation in nanoscale electrochemical systems yield novel modulations in the rate constant and concomitant electrical currents. The proposed models extend the utility of presently used Marcus–Hush–Chidsey kinetics to a larger class of materials and could be used as a test of dimensional character. The new models are applied to explain the experimental variation of the electrochemical rate constant of single-layer graphene.

The uniform electrodeposition of certain materials, such as Li metal, remains elusive because the mechanisms controlling growth instability are not fully understood. To determine the conditions that lead to either stable or unstable deposition, we develop a phase-field model for the growth of multiple deposits in a binary electrolyte and examine the behavior as the kinetic parameters are varied. We find that the second Damköhler number, defined as the ratio between the reaction and the mass transfer fluxes, is an indicator of deposition instability. Our results suggest that controlling reaction kinetics and initial roughness are essential in achieving stable electrodeposition.
