Ultrahigh-performance concretes (UHPCs) are obtained by optimizing several technologies: minimizing the amount of water added, using superplasticizers and a wide particle size distribution, and packing the particles to improve fluidity with minimized water additions and to optimize load-carrying capacity. Fibers can be incorporated to increase ductility, leading to ultrahigh-performance fiber-reinforced concretes (UHPFRCs). Such enhanced concretes can approach the compressive strength of steel, with a remarkable improvement in durability. UHPCs offer new solutions for innovative construction, especially in aggressive environments.

In this article, the authors describe the principle and application of differential-aperture x-ray microscopy (DAXM). This recently developed scanning x-ray microprobe technique uses a confocal or traveling pinhole camera approach to determine the crystal structure, crystallographic orientation, and elastic and plastic strain tensors within bulk materials. The penetrating properties of x-rays make the technique applicable to optically opaque as well as transparent materials, and it is nondestructive; this provides for in situ, submicrometer-resolution characterization of local crystal structure and for measurements of microstructure evolution on mesoscopic length scales from tenths to hundreds of micrometers. Examples are presented that illustrate the use of DAXM to study grain and subgrain morphology, grain-boundary types and networks, and local intra- and intergranular elastic and plastic deformation. Information of this type now provides a direct link between the actual structure and evolution in materials and increasingly powerful computer simulations and multiscale modeling of materials microstructure and evolution.

The following article is an edited transcript based on the MRS Medalist presentation given by Ivan K.Schuller of the University of California, San Diego, on December 3, 2003, at the Materials Research Society Fall Meeting in Boston.Schuller received the MRS Medal for “his innovative studies of exchange bias in magnetic heterostructures and nanostructures.” Magnetic nanostructures have received increasing attention in recent years, motivated by the interesting phenomena that are apparent when physical size becomes comparable with relevant magnetic length scales.In addition, a number of important potential applications in the sensors and storage industries have emerged. When magnetic nanostructures are in contact with dissimilar magnetic materials, and because their magnetic fields extend considerably outside the physical structure, they are very susceptible to interaction with the surrounding environment.A particularly interesting situation is a ferromagnetic nanostructure in contact with an anti-ferromagnetic substrate.In this “exchange-biased” configuration, a variety of unusual phenomena arise:The reversal mode of the ferromagnet changes considerably, the superparamagnetic transition temperature is affected, and there is a noticeable change in the microscopic spin configuration.A series of experiments will be described involving these phenomena in nanostructured ferromagnets prepared by electron-beam lithography and self-assembly.

The formation pathway to double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) from C60 encased within single-walled carbon nanotubes (peapods) is introduced in this article. Onedimensionally arranged C60 molecules coalesce gradually within the nanotube and change the structure to C60 dimers, trimers, tetramers, and so on as intermediates. In addition to these interesting structural transformations visualized in the nanotube space, the nanotube itself is very stable, and this structural stability is very important when using the interior of the nanotube as the reaction field or the space for molecular storage. In terms of optical absorption, the lowest energy absorption band for DWNTs, ∼0.65 eV, shows broadened and downshifted features as compared with that of SWNTs.We expect that this opticalabsorption feature will lead to the use of DWNTs in absorbing devices for optical-fiber communications. The Raman experiments give new information about the frequency of the C-C stretching-mode vibration for nanotubes with diameters of less than ∼1 nm, which shows a decrease in vibration frequency with decreasing tube diameter. This diameter dependence can be explained by an admixture of sp3 character in the C-C interaction. Therefore, the electronic and mechanical properties of nanotubes with diameters of <1 nm are expected to be different from nanotubes of the ∼1-nm-diameter class, and we anticipate that new phenomena will occur in small-diameter tubes.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is now well established among the tools of choice for the analysis and characterization of materials.Applications of AFM span many industries including chemicals, plastics, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors.Advancements in AFM instrumentation over the last five years have expanded the range of application of this technology to investigate thermal and mechanical properties of complex materials at high spatial resolution as well as structural and morphological characterization of materials subjected to thermal and mechanical stresses.In particular, this has been an enabling technology for an improved understanding of structure–property relationships in polymeric materials including homopolymers, blends, impact-modified polymer systems, porous polymer systems, and semicrystalline polymers.Practical examples illustrate applications of contact, tapping-mode, phase-imaging, hot-stage, and scanning thermal methods for the characterization of modern industrial polymer materials.

While it is conventionally thought that liquids turn to solids at their “freezing” point, it is often the case that materials must be supercooled (cooled below the freezing temperature) before nucleation actually happens. There is growing evidence that coupled processes, including chemical–structural ordering and orientational–translational ordering, are among the factors that affect exactly when and how nucleation occurs in liquids and crystals. Recent density functional calculations have demonstrated that such coupled routes, which are not incorporated within the one-dimensional framework of the classical theory, can dramatically influence the overall nucleation process. Here, some recently observed cases in metal alloys are discussed, establishing a relationship between developing order in undercooled liquids and the nucleation barrier, the influence of magnetic ordering on nucleation in Co-based melts, and the role of interfacial structure and chemistry on the catalytic efficiency of inoculants for heterogeneous nucleation.

An improved understanding of the interactions at the nanoscale level between the bioceramics in medical implants and the hard or soft tissues in the human body could contribute significantly to the design of new-generation prostheses and postoperative patient management strategies.Overall, the benefits of advanced ceramic materials in biomedical applications have been universally accepted, specifically in terms of their strength, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, and wear resistance in articulating joints.The continuous development of new-generation implants utilizing nanocoatings with novel nanosensors and devices is leading to better compatibility with human tissue and improved well-being and longevity for patients. This article gives a short overview of bioceramics and reexamines key issues of concern for processing and applying nanoceramics as biomaterials.

The design of future molecular electronic devices requires a firm understanding of the conduction mechanisms that determine their electrical characteristics. Progress toward this goal has been hindered by complications in controlling the exact configuration and makeup of fabricated molecular junctions, thus limiting the availability of quantitative experimental data for developing cohesive theories to model and predict molecular transport. This article summarizes recent research aimed at developing well-controlled systems for comparing molecular conduction and vibrational spectra using crossed-wire and in-wire metal–molecule–metal junctions. Systematic variations in molecular structure and metal–molecule contacts show strong quantitative agreement in device properties, while spectroscopic data provide evidence that the properties are due to the molecular junction. Further investigations using these and other molecular junction test beds will provide the needed experimental data to advance fundamental understanding of molecular transport and facilitate future molecular electronics applications.

Advances in our fundamental understanding of and control over interparticle colloidal forces have enhanced our ability to formulate stable, complex fluids with colloidal and/or nano-sized particles with specific rheological properties. This understanding stems from advances in experimental methods that probe these forces, either directly or indirectly, as well as theoretical treatments and simulation methods linking macroscopic suspension properties to the dynamics and interactions between colloidal particles. This article highlights recent experimental developments in the structure—property relationships for colloidal dispersions, with emphasis on the sensitivity of colloid rheology to nanometer-scale interactions. Examples of applications are used to illustrate these relationships.

Nanoscale ceramic particles, such as layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have been developed to deliver drugs or genes into biological cells. In this article, we describe the controlled-release properties of LDHs as drug delivery carriers, the formation of bio-LDH nanohybrids, their in vivo and in vitro cytotoxicity tests, and their potential as anticancer gene delivery carriers. Unstable biomolecules can be intercalated into LDHs, displacing the interlayer anions; the drug or gene's negative charge is thus shielded, enabling penetration into the cell. In the slightly acidic environment of the cell, ceramic nanoplatelets of ∼100 nm diameter dissolve, thus releasing the intercalates in a controlled manner.

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was originally conceived as a method for measuring atomic-scale surface topography. Over the last two decades, it has blossomed into an array of techniques that can be used to obtain a rich variety of information about nanoscale material properties. With the exception of friction measurements, these techniques have traditionally depended on tip—sample interactions directed normal to the sample's surface. Recently, researchers have explored several effects arising from interactions parallel to surfaces, usually by deliberately applying a modulated lateral displacement. In fact, some parallel motion is ubiquitous to cantilever-based SPM, due to the tilt of the cantilever. Recent studies, performed in contact, noncontact, and intermittent-contact modes, provide new insights into properties such as structural anisotropy, lateral interactions with surface features, nanoscale shear stress and contact mechanics, and in-plane energy dissipation. The understanding gained from interpreting this behavior has consequences for all cantilever-based scanning probe microscopies.

X-rays have been widely used in the structural analysis of materials because of their significant penetration ability, at least on the length scale of the granularity of most materials. This allows, in principle, for fully three-dimensional characterization of the bulk properties of a material. One of the main advantages of x-ray diffraction over electron microscopy is that destructive sample preparation to create thin sections is often avoidable. A major disadvantage of x-ray diffraction with respect to electron microscopy is its inability to produce real-space images of the materials under investigation—there are simply no suitable lenses available. There has been significant progress in x-ray microscopy associated with the development of lenses, usually based on zone plates, Kirkpatrick–Baez mirrors, or compound refractive lenses. These technologies are far behind the development of electron optics, particularly for the large magnification ratios needed to attain high resolution. In this article, the authors report progress toward the development of an alternative general approach to imaging, the direct inversion of diffraction patterns by computation methods. By avoiding the use of an objective lens altogether, the technique is free from aberrations that limit the resolution, and it can be highly efficient with respect to radiation damage of the samples. It can take full advantage of the three-dimensional capability that comes from the x-ray penetration. The inversion step employs computational methods based on oversampling to obtain a general solution of the diffraction phase problem.

While the primary function of concrete is structural, its pervasiveness in our society lends it to other functions and creates the need for it to maintain its integrity and aesthetic quality. Therefore, concrete with added functionality–for example, self-cleaning characteristics and the ability to remove pollutants–is desirable. Heterogeneous photocatalysis (e.g., gas–solid or liquid–solid catalytic processes caused by light irradiation) by semiconductor particles or coatings has now reached a high level of development and is a promising technology for the reduction of global environmental pollutants. Among the various semiconductor materials, TiO2 in the form of anatase has attracted wide interest, due to its strong oxidizing power under near-UV radiation, its chemical stability when exposed to acidic and basic compounds, its chemical inertness in the absence of UV light, and the absence of toxicity. TiO2 has proved very effective in the reduction of pollutants such as NOx, aromatics, ammonia, and aldehydes. Surprisingly, the use of TiO2 in combination with cementitious materials has shown a favorable synergistic effect in the reduction of pollutants. These new materials have already found relevant applications in self-cleaning building walls and in the reduction of urban pollutants.

The imaging and characterization of individual molecules and atomically thin, effectively one-dimensional crystals of rock salt and other halides encapsulated within single-walled carbon nanotubes are reviewed in this article. These species were imaged by conventional and super-resolved high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and by scanning tunneling microscopy, revealing the detailed atomic structure of these nanoscopic species.

This article reviews the current understanding of the fundamentals of nucleation theory and its use to extract values for the solid–liquid interfacial free energy from experimental and simulation data.

A new approach to general sensors for odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using thin films of chemically responsive dyes as a colorimetric sensor array is described. This optoelectronic “nose,” by using an array of multiple dyes whose colors change based on the full range of intermolecular interactions, provides enormous discriminatory power among odorants in a simple device that can be easily digitally imaged. High sensitivities (ppb) have been demonstrated for the detection of biologically important analytes such as amines, carboxylic acids, and thiols. By the proper choice of dyes and substrate, the array can be made essentially nonresponsive to changes in humidity.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one-dimensional nanostructures with unique properties. This article discusses why CNTs provide an ideal basis for a future carbonbased nanoelectronic technology, focusing specifically on single-carbon-nanotube fieldeffect transistors (CNT-FETs). Results of transport experiments and theoretical modeling will be used to address such issues as the nature of the switching mechanism, the role of the metal contacts, the role of the environment, the FET scaling properties, and the use of these findings to produce high-performance p-type, n-type, and ambipolar CNT-FETs and simple intra-nanotube circuits. CNTs are also direct-gap nanostructures that show promise in the field of optoelectronics. This article briefly reviews their optical behavior and presents results that show that ambipolar CNT-FETs can be used to produce electrically controlled light sources based on radiative electron–hole recombination. The reverse process—that is, the generation of photocurrents by the irradiation of single CNT—FETs—and photoconductivity spectra of individual CNTs are also demonstrated.

Metalorganic deposition (MOD) is an attractive process for low-cost, high-rate deposition of YBa2Cu3O7– (YBCO) films on continuous lengths of biaxially textured metallic templates for second-generation (2G) high-temperature superconductor (HTS) wires.MOD of YBCO films involves four steps:precursor synthesis, coating, decomposition, and reaction.The final films must meet stringent requirements, including high critical current, uniformity across the width and along the length of the textured substrate, and excellent mechanical properties.Achieving these properties has required the development of a metalorganic precursor that produces an intermediate BaF2-based film, which in turn is converted to a high-quality YBCO film.Understanding and controlling the deposition of the metalorganic precursor and its conversion to YBCO are critical to reproducibly manufacturing uniform, high-performance, HTS wires required for commercial applications.This article reviews the issues that must be addressed in the use of MOD for low-cost YBCO film fabrication and summarizes the performance of 2G HTS wires prepared by this manufacturing process.

The following article is based on the plenary presentation given by Darryl L.Smith of Los Alamos National Laboratory on December 1, 2003, at the Materials Research Society Fall Meeting in Boston.The presentation contrasted the electronic structure of inorganic semiconductors with that of organic semiconductors, examined how the differences in electronic structure lead to complementary physical properties, and discussed applications of these materials—including infrared detectors and sources, gamma-ray detectors, and chemical/biological sensors—that are of interest to issues of national security.

Phase-change nonvolatile semiconductor memory technology is based on an electrically initiated, reversible rapid amorphous-to-crystalline phase-change process in multicomponent chalcogenide alloy materials similar to those used in rewriteable optical disks. Long cycle life, low programming energy, and excellent scaling characteristics are advantages that make phase-change semiconductor memory a promising candidate to replace flash memory in future applications. Phase-change technology is being commercialized by a number of semiconductor manufacturers. Fundamental processes in phase-change semiconductor memory devices, device performance characteristics, and progress toward commercialization of the technology are reviewed.
