1 The galleys of one book by a group of American writers, who had best remain anonymous, contained a mass of these errors, clearly derived from official Indian sources, while actually giving as references the originals. In this instance the authors, when this was pointed out to them, made the necessary corrections.
2 There are certain risks in endeavouring to explain the Chinese point of view. When I did so in my China–India Border, published in January 1964, no less a personage than Sir Olaf Caroe, one time head of the Indian Foreign Department and, perhaps, the true architect of the McMahon Line, accused me of the intriguing mental gymnastics of being simultaneously ‘brainwashed by Moscow and Peking’.
