page 235 note 1 William Hillebrand (1821-86) whose book t Flora of the Hawaiian Islands' (1888) was annotated and published after the author's death by W. F. Hillebrandz.

page 242 note 1 His observations on the polarization of the corona were not made during that period, but during the eclipse expedition ta Spain in 1870 and to Ceylon in 1871. These are recorded in Mem. Roy. Astronomical Sot., 1879, vol. 41, pp. 801, 825. (Curiously, the same volume records tile observations made by another William J. Lewis during the eclipse of 1860.) Another slip in previous obituary notices is the date of the Oriel Fellowship.

page 255 note 1 In the 1925 edition of 'Minerva' he appears in the lists and index as three individuals—G. V. Wulff, Wulf, and Vul'f.
