Based on deep analysis of technological data of the sinterplant and experiments, the chlorine input in the sinter mix wasidentified as the main factor influencing the dust precipitationefficiency in ESP. On the basis of this perception two differentways of emission control where successfully worked out andrealized: first, the control of chlorine input with the charge,second, the selective filter dust removal. The annual average ofdust content in clean gas was reduced from 49.7 mg/m3 (2004)to 24.6 mg/m3 (STP) (2006). In parallel this measures lead to areduction of Dioxin emission level < 1 ng/m3 pt (STP).

The action of ArcelorMittal Maizières in the domain ofphysical chemistry of metallurgical slags and liquid steel hasalways been sustained. In particular, this activity gave birthto several models among which the cell model that describesthe properties of metallurgical slags (and of liquid oxideinclusions) has a special place. This model, along with otherspecific models describing the metallic phases, has beenincluded in a home-built equilibrium calculation code CEQCSI(Chemical EQuilibrium Calculations for the Steel Industry)to allow easy calculations by non specialist users. Severalapplications to steel elaboration will be presented. An insightinto the development of new models such as the GeneralizedCentral Atom model is also given. The application domainof this latter model is high alloyed and segregated steelgrades and the same formalism is also used to improve theperformance of the cell model for slags.

The aim of the research is to produce an algorithm forscrap quality determination which can be on-line integratedin the combined process model. The method combines simplemetallurgical relationships for residual elements with completereduction in steel and complex distribution based assemblagesfor some other elements.

The end blow manganese behavior in BOF process wasassessed through analysis of an industrial data base.
The available literature suggests that the main operationalfactors to influence the end blow manganese behavior inBOF are: manganese input, slag volume, oxidation level andtemperature. The large extension of the industrial data basehas made possible to separate the influence for each factor.Then correlations between end blow manganese and thesefactors have been obtained.

Asymmetric hot rolling has been found to decrease therolling loads, to increase recrystallisation kinetics and torefine the grain size. Thereby this rolling practice opensthe way to save energy, to decrease hot band thickness,to enlarge formats, to increase strength, to reduce alloyingadditions and to improve formability.

Nakayama Steel Works LTD. has succeeded in attainingthe cooling rate (105 -106 K/s) necessary for amorphouslayering technique by using the innovative idea ofimmediately cooling the spraying flame. Amorphous alloy(Fe70Cr10P13C7) formed by the new technique displays acorrosion resistance more than 500 times higher than the oneof SUS316L in aqua-regia immersion test, while the similarlyformed amorphous magnetic alloy film (Fe81B13Si4C2)indicates high magnetism of 15.4 kGauss in magnetic fluxdensity.
