Call for Special Collections Proposals

Memory, Mind & Media is an innovative gold open access journal published by Cambridge University Press. The journal fosters high-quality, interdisciplinary conversations combining scientific and humanistic approaches to the study of memory in the digital era. It is a home for a wide variety of scholars, including those working within and across history, philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, media studies, science and technology studies, cultural studies, law, literature, anthropology, political science, sociology, and computational science.

We champion jargon free discussions of theoretical and methodological innovation and diversity.

The journal now calls for proposals for Special Collections.

A special collection is similar to a traditional journal special issue, yet it offers much more flexibility and scope for the ongoing development and promotion of content.

MMM has a rolling submission window. Special collections do not have a finite number of pages and/or contributions. Each contribution in a collection flows through a peer review process overseen by the collection editors but using the journal’s online ScholarOne platform and supported by the Journal’s Managing Editor.

Once a contribution has been peer reviewed and accepted for publication it is published online on a dedicated collection page.

Each collection therefore may emerge over a period of weeks or months (within a calendar year) and each contribution will be promoted separately to ensure maximum impact. This is different to the traditional journal special issue model which tends to have just one key moment of exposure.

This flexibility enables editors to add and respond to content in a more iterative fashion, for instance by adding commentaries and other work to drive debate, particularly around ongoing events.

 Proposals should include:

  • Title of Collection
  • Name(s), affiliation(s) and a short CV of the proposed editor(s).
  • A rationale setting out the how the collection will speak to the journal’s themes and scope. How will this collection make an original and timely contribution to the field? Why now? Which readerships of the journal will it appeal to (primary and secondary)?
  • Issue structure: What types of contributions are being proposed? We encourage contributors to be innovative in planning the collection. So, in addition to the traditional article form and an editorial, what other content will be included: commentary, round-table discussions, images, video?
  • You may also wish to provide a review section on the same theme as the collection.
  • What timetable do you have in mind for initial submission of content, completion of reviews and for publication?
  • Provide a list of the contributors and a paragraph each on their affiliation/biography, as well as the titles, abstracts, and lengths of their proposed contributions. Where a given author has published extensively on a subject already, please indicate the new and original contribution to be made by the proposed paper.
  • Finally, what networks, organizations, conferences, or other vehicles can you suggest through which the special issue could be marketed?
