We formulate and prove a large sieve inequality for quadratic characters over a number field. To do this, we introduce the notion of an n-th order Hecke family. We develop the basic theory of these Hecke families, including versions of the Poisson summation formula.

We show that if a Finsler metric on S2 with reversibility r has flag curvatures K satisfying (r/(r+1))2 < K ≤ 1, then closed geodesics with specific contact-topological properties cannot exist, in particular there are no closed geodesics with precisely one transverse self-intersection point. This is a special case of a more general phenomenon, and other closed geodesics with many self-intersections are also excluded. We provide examples of Randers type, obtained by suitably modifying the metrics constructed by Katok [21], proving that this pinching condition is sharp. Our methods are borrowed from the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations. Finally, we study global dynamical aspects of 3-dimensional energy levels C2-close to S3

Let A be a finite set of integers and FA(x) = ∑a∈A exp(2πiax) be its exponential sum. McGehee, Pigno and Smith and Konyagin have independently proved that ∥FA∥1 ≥ c log|A| for some absolute constant c. The lower bound has the correct order of magnitude and was first conjectured by Littlewood. In this paper we present lower bounds on the L1-norm of exponential sums of sets in the d-dimensional grid d. We show that ∥FA∥1 is considerably larger than log|A| when A ⊂ d has multidimensional structure. We furthermore prove similar lower bounds for sets in , which in a technical sense are multidimensional and discuss their connection to an inverse result on the theorem of McGehee, Pigno and Smith and Konyagin.

We extend the the combinatorics of tableaux to the study of Brauer walled Brauer and partition algebras. In particular, we provide uniform constructions of Murphy bases and ‘Specht’ filtrations of permutation modules. This allows us to give a uniform construction of semistandard bases of their quasi-hereditary covers.

We characterize those countable rooted trees with non-trivial components whose full automorphism group has uncountable strong cofinality, and those whose full automorphism group contains an open subgroup with ample generics.

A phase-space anisotropic operator in =L2(ℝn) is a self-adjoint operator whose resolvent family belongs to a natural C*-completion of the space of Hörmander symbols of order zero. Equivalently, each member of the resolvent family is norm-continuous under conjugation with the Schrödinger unitary representation of the Heisenberg group. The essential spectrum of such a phase-space anisotropic operator is the closure of the union of usual spectra of all its “phase-space asymptotic localizations”, obtained as limits over diverging ultrafilters of ℝn×ℝn-translations of the operator. The result extends previous analysis of the purely configurational anisotropic operators, for which only the behavior at infinity in ℝn was allowed to be non-trivial.

This paper develops the metric theory of simultaneous inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on a planar curve with respect to multiple approximating functions. Our results naturally generalize the homogeneous Lebesgue measure and Hausdorff dimension results for the sets of simultaneously well-approximable points on planar curves, established in Badziahin and Levesley (Glasg. Math. J., 49(2):367–375, 2007), Beresnevich et al. (Ann. of Math. (2), 166(2):367–426, 2007), Beresnevich and Velani (Math. Ann., 337(4):769–796, 2007) and Vaughan and Velani (Invent. Math., 166(1):103–124, 2006).

We show that the mapping class group of a closed, connected, oriented surface of genus at least three is generated by 3 elements of order 3. Moreover, we show that the mapping class group of a closed, connected, oriented surface of genus at least three is generated and by 4 elements of order 4.

We study the cohomology of the space of immersed genus g surfaces in a simply-connected manifold. We compute the rational cohomology of this space in a stable range which goes to infinity with g. In fact, in this stable range we are also able to obtain information about torsion in the cohomology of this space, as long as we localise away from (g-1).

We determine the Conley–Zehnder indices of all periodic orbits of the rotating Kepler problem for energies below the critical Jacobi energy. Consequently, we show the universal cover of the bounded component of the regularized energy hypersurface is dynamically convex. Moreover, in the universal cover there is always precisely one periodic orbit with Conley–Zehnder index 3, namely the lift of the doubly covered retrograde circular orbit.

In a recent paper [5], Lagarias and Soundararajan study the y-smooth solutions to the equation a+b=c. Conditionally under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, they obtain an estimate for the number of those solutions weighted by a compactly supported smooth function, as well as a lower bound for the number of bounded unweighted solutions. In this paper, we prove a more precise conditional estimate for the number of weighted solutions that is valid when y is relatively large with respect to x, so as to connect our estimate with the one obtained by La Bretèche and Granville in a recent work [2]. We also prove, conditionally under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis, the conjectured upper bound for the number of bounded unweighted solutions, thus obtaining its exact asymptotic behaviour.

The Schur Theorem says that if G is a group whose center Z(G) has finite index n, then the order of the derived group G′ is finite and bounded by a number depending only on n. In this paper we show that if G is a finite group such that G/Z(G) has rank r, then the rank of G′ is r-bounded. We also show that a similar result holds for a large class of infinite groups.

We investigate the conjugacy growth of finitely generated linear groups. We show that finitely generated non-virtually-solvable subgroups of GLd have uniform exponential conjugacy growth and in fact that the number of distinct polynomials arising as characteristic polynomials of the elements of the ball of radius n for the word metric has exponential growth rate bounded away from 0 in terms of the dimension d only.

In this paper, we give an alternative approach to Royden–Earle–Kra–Markovic's characterization of biholomorphic automorphisms of Teichmüller space of Riemann surface of analytically finite type.

We study the decay of μ(B(x,r)∩C)/μ(B(x,r)) as r ↓ 0 for different kinds of measures μ on ℝn and various cones C around x. As an application, we provide sufficient conditions that imply that the local dimensions can be calculated via cones almost everywhere.

Let L = K1 ∪ K2 be a 2-component link in the 3-sphere such that K1 is a trivial knot. In this paper, we introduce a new bridge index, denoted by bK1 = 1([L]), for L. Roughly speaking, bK1 = 1([L]) is the minimum of the bridge numbers of the links ambient isotopic to L under the constraint that all of the bridge numbers of the components corresponding to K1 are 1. We provide a lower bound estimate of bK1 = 1([L]) in the case when L is a non-split satellite link. By using this result, we show that for each integer n(≥ 2), there exists a link Ln = K1n ∪ K2n with K1n a trivial knot such that bK1n = 1([Ln])−b([Ln]) = n−1, where b([Ln]) is the bridge index of Ln.

Granville and Soundararajan have recently introduced the notion of pretentiousness in the study of multiplicative functions of modulus bounded by 1, essentially the idea that two functions which are similar in a precise sense should exhibit similar behavior. It turns out, somewhat surprisingly, that this does not directly extend to detecting power cancellation - there are multiplicative functions which exhibit as much cancellation as possible in their partial sums that, modified slightly, give rise to functions which exhibit almost as little as possible. We develop two new notions of pretentiousness under which power cancellation can be detected, one of which applies to a much broader class of multiplicative functions.

We show that, for finitely generated groups, the property of admitting a coarse median structure is preserved under relative hyperbolicity.

The Segal map connects the Burnside category of finite groups to the stable homotopy category of their classifying spaces. The chromatic filtrations on the latter can be used to define filtrations on the former. We prove a related conjecture of Ravenel's in some cases, and present counterexamples to the general statement.

Let Λ denote the Weierstrass function with a period lattice Λ. We consider escaping parameters in the family βΛ, i.e. the parameters β for which the orbits of all critical values of βΛ approach infinity under iteration. Unlike the exponential family, the functions considered here are ergodic and admit a non-atomic, σ-finite, ergodic, conservative and invariant measure μ absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Under additional assumptions on Λ, we estimate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of escaping parameters in the family βΛ from below, and compare it with the Hausdorff dimension of the escaping set in the dynamical space, proving a similarity between the parameter plane and the dynamical space.
