Extract

As a partial generalization of a theorem of Hurewicz (3), Whitehead gave an important theorem on deformation retracts ((9), p. 273) which was proved only for polytopes. A demonstration of a part of Whitehead's theorem for absolute neighbourhood retracts was published by Fox ((2), p. 42) with a remark given by Samelson(8).
