Extract

The problem A balloon which ascends with constant vertical velocity—is released from ground level into a steady wind which blows it towards an archer who is situated at ground level and able to fire an arrow at any elevation. What is the minimum speed of release of the arrow needed to achieve a hit?

(He is only allowed to fire after the balloon is released (!) and we shall assume the flight of the arrow to be unaffected by the wind.)
