Additional record of Sphoeroides pachygaster (Pisces: Tetraodontidae) in the Tyrrhenian Sea and notes on the distribution of the species in the Mediterranean

Abstract

One specimen of smooth puffer, Sphoeroides pachygaster, was caught by a bottom trawler off the coast of Anzio in the central Tyrrhenian Sea. The present finding represents the first occurrence of the species in the central Tyrrhenian Sea and the third specimen recorded in the whole Tyrrhenian basin. Data on the morphometry and meristics of our specimen are given and some remarks about the geographical distribution of the species in the Mediterranean is presented.
