At the time of going to press, we have just learned with sadness of the death of Donald Bailey, formerly of the British Museum. Don was always a very modest and approachable person, despite establishing himself as the world's foremost authority on Greek and Roman lamps. He was much influenced in his early career by Donald Strong, the Society's first Chairman, at that time his mentor in the Greek and Roman Department at the Museum. Don was a valued member of the Sidi Khrebish (Benghazi) team in the 1970s and reported on the lamps from the excavation. He was also Editor of Libyan Studies from 1990 to 1997. We hope to publish a fuller appreciation of his work next year.
