As one can expect, assembling this collection has been a challenge. But this was mitigated by a few factors. Selecting forty was an easier task than it would have been, had a smaller number restricted my choice. And two other considerations made the task easier. The present compilation consists of forty articles that have been published in Legal Studies over the past forty years. At the outset, it should be emphasised that this is not intended to be a collection of the “best 40.” Rather the collection is designed to be a representative sample of articles which have appeared in the journal over the past four decades, selected to show the wealth and range of the scholarship that the journal has published.
As one can expect, assembling this collection has been a challenge. But this was mitigated by a few factors. Selecting forty was an easier task than it would have been, had a smaller number restricted my choice. And two other considerations made the task easier. Legal Studies has produced collections of articles in Feminism, Gender and Intersectionality; Law and Culture; Private Law; and Public Law. These collections show the depth and breath of our published scholarship in those areas. The reader is also invited to explore them. Second, the choices are intended to demonstrate “range and depth” of our scholarship, rather than this editor’s particular (or peculiar) view of the “best” forty pieces. To put together a list of “Top 40 Greatest Hits” would have an onerous, if not near impossible, task.
I hope you enjoy browsing (or, it is to be hoped, reading) this collection to see for yourself the breath and depth of scholarship that Legal Studies has published since 1980.
