1 Pirenne identifies him as Psammetichus II (594–588), the father of Apries; but there are some grounds for thinking that when Herodotus refers simply to “Psammetichus” he means the much more important figure of Psammetichus l (663–609), the great-grandfather of Apries (see Her. ii. §161).
